Academys Future...

Desi Arnaz did a nice version of that tune back in the big-band days.

That's where I heard it before. Thanks. Take a piece of music, change the tempo, interpret, arrange for the talent, rehearse, perform and voila! same tune in many flavours

a drum corps played this ;-)

Back on Topic, Not sure if this was out...

Designers meet and welcome Ian Grom to the team:

Ian Grom is a performer, composer and educator based out of Southern California. He received his Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from California State University, Long Beach, where he specialized in drum set, marimba and composition. He has an unprecedented 14 WGI medals since 2005. Some of his recent performance highlights include numerous prime-time live appearances on the hit CBS show Survivor, opening for Aerosmith with Canadian artist Christa Borden, and playing on the soundtrack to the box office smash The Grudge.

As a front ensemble specialist and caption head, Ian maintains an extremely intensive teaching schedule at Chino Hills, Los Alamitos, and Pacifica high schools. First starting as a consultant in 2008, Ian became the full time front ensemble arranger and instructor for Chino Hills High School in the fall of 2009. The ensemble became a three time World class finalist taking the PSW Bronze in 2009 and the PSW Silver medal in 2010. Ian started at Pacifica in 2005 starting their six consecutive PSO WGI medals from 2005-2010. In the fall of 2005 he started building the Los Alamitos percussion program becoming the 2007 WGI PSA Bronze medalist, 2009 WGI PSA Gold medalist and 2010 World class finalist. He worked at Fountain Valley HS from the fall of 2006 until the winter of 2009, winning multiple percussion titles in the indoor and outdoor programs, including a two time WGI finalist in the Open class and an Open class medal in 2008.

He started with the Pulse Percussion independent world ensemble behind the scenes in the winter of 2008 as an arranger, and within 3 short years helped take the ensemble to it's first PIW Gold Medal in 2010 as the front ensemble composer/ arranger and instructor. Starting in the summer of 2009, Ian was brought on as the electronic consultant/arranger the Cadets drum and Bugle corps.

After being encouraged to venture into writing for winds, he now designs and composes the fall productions for multiple high schools in the Southern California area. Ian's use of 100% original music, cutting edge technology, and innovative show concepts have made him one of the most sought-after composers in the Southern California marching scene.

Along with fellow designer and instructor John Mapes, he co-founded box-six.com in August of 2008, which is the exclusive seller of their original indoor percussion and marching band shows.

Ian will be joining The Academy as a design consultant for the first time in 2011.

The e-mail has been sent. I knew that show pretty well.

Not sure where you have been looking my man, but check out this video of Tito Puente:

The piece was originally written by a Puerto Rican composer, Rafael Hernandez.

I am a big fan of a Tito Puente song with Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd called "Mambo Herd." I think it would be good if a corps played it.

Well here is the official announcement of Phantombari1's much ballyhooed insider info, directly from The Academy's website. Some very exciting developments out of Arizona indeed!

The ability to have overnight camps may be the biggest change for The Academy. Could be the intangible factor that pays huge dividends come June.

I'm personally pleased to hear Cesario is designing the new uniforms. His designs are the most aesthetically pleasing to me, because of the crisp lines they create, and he designs them with the mindset that they need to POP on tv.

Anyway, here's the concrete stuff:

New uniform design - The designers have seen the first sketches of a potential new design for the corps. We are looking at all options with this new design. With all of the positive improvements to the corps design and instructional staff, we want to make sure that the look of the corps will match the upgraded elements behind the uniform. Regardless, you can be sure that the design will be state of the art with the award-winning designer Michael Cesario leading this effort.

Overnight rehearsal camps - New to the spring rehearsals will be the opportunity for the corps to move in together over each of our six monthly camps. These overnight camps will allow the corps to be much more productive with rehearsal time with indoor rehearsal space and members not having to commute between rehearsal blocks. The corps will be convening Friday evenings and eating, sleeping, rehearsing, and growing as a corps until the camps end on Sunday afternoon. Most of the camps will be held in the city of Maricopa, where the corps spent a week last summer. An artificial turf stadium, 3 gyms, multiple classrooms and lecture halls give us the opportunity to grow like never before. While there will be a fee for each camp weekend, this will replace the cost of fast food, gas, and housing that most corps members will save by running the camps in this manner.

Reduction in Financial Requirement - 2011 will not require an increase in the base membership dues for the first time in several years. In addition, the fundraising requirement will be cut in half from the previous year. All of the fundraising programs and opportunities will remain in tact. Our hope is that the members will have an easier time making a dent in their membership dues through the programs we offer. With these changes a returning member will see a reduction as much as $300 from the previous year.

Design team additions - This year, we have added three new individuals to the table who will contribute to what will likely be the strongest production we have ever assembled. At the top of our design team is our drill designer and new to the program coordinator position, Richard Hinshaw. He will be working directly with Michael Raiford, a designer from Austin, Texas to steer the direction of the show into a new artistic and creative realm. Michael has been in the pageantry arts for decades and is committed to expanding and refining The Academy's unique artistic voice. In addition to what he has done for us in the past with costume and flag design, he will be upgraded to an artistic and creative visionary for the overall program this year.

Working with the music programming is new consultant Ian Grom. Ian is a well-known composer in the pageantry arts having worked with several competitive marching bands and winter drumlines. His most recent success is his composition and design of the WGI Independent World gold medalist - Pulse Percussion. (you can see this show here) His understanding of programming competitive shows, designing concepts, and knowledge of the audience's appreciation for music and visual design is what attracted us to him.

Also new to the design team is Chris Velez and his team of choreographers. Chris is the new color guard caption head residing on Southern California. He has been teaching and designing for a variety of marching bands and winter guards for the last decade. His most well known association has been with Fantasia and their team of instructors and designers. We look forward to Chris enhancing the guard experience for the corps in years to come.

Instructional staff additions - If you are a Facebook fan of The Academy, or have been keeping up with our website updates you are already on top of these new developments. With many of our staff returning this season, we have added a few key individuals that will enhance the member experience even more. Murray Gusseck, Freddy Martin, Mike Martin, Chris Velez, and others are all new high-level teachers that the corps will be exposed to throughout the season. Read more about them in our website news.

I hope that this message helps to get you fired up about the season to come. All of the staff have been hard at work setting up this year's program. We look forward to fielding the strongest corps in our history and hope that you become a part of that success. My best advice to you is to prepare for the auditions to the best of your ability, both on your equipment and in your physical conditioning. Demonstrating to the staff that you are willing to work hard and put in the time will go a long way towards earning a spot in this year's corps.

The majority of the corps membership came from (and still does) the Phoenix Metro area. So there was no housing provided by the organization. Out of state members stayed with in-state members.

Right on the money TallAZ. Mark and I had a good laugh about Cesario. I asked if he'd be in town for the unveiling, he said "no...but that would make it real fun wouldn't it!"

The plans for their camps are still in the works but I hope to have everything solidified by weeks end. The fact that the Academy has made these moves and decisions about staff and camps shows they are very serious about moving into the top twelve!

Ah! That's VERY cool, actually!

yeah it worked well - there was a carpool from Tucson, and we all were "adopted" by local families. Don't know if they still do it, but back in 2004, there were also 6 hour rehearsals every sunday, in addition to one weekend a month.
