Mellophone or French Horn...

I beg to differ about the # of mellos on the field; what you should have is a thick middle horn section with flugels and french horns or at least flugels and then you only need 4-6 mellophones. 6 french horns, 6 flugels, and 4 mellophones create a really thick sound. I personally think the all-mellophone lines sound strange; like somebody sucked the middle out of the hornline. Too much frosting on the cake....

Obviously, mellophone is the best-suited horn in a hornline (the bell isn't facing backwards and the partials aren't as close together)

However, the F. Horn (if played well) is gorgeous sound. The people that say F. Horns sound "raunchy unless played perfectly" are very right, but a good F. Horn player can play the crap out of a Mello any day of the week.

French Horns are so powerful (in a concert setting)
