Though this goes more to a group of corps rather than just one...

05/05/05 UTICA, NY

Several months ago, the management teams of the Erie Thunderbirds, Ghost Riders, Golden Eagles, Lambertville Volunteers and Mass Brass convened in Utica, New York to discuss the possibility of starting a mini corps circuit. The purpose of the meeting was to investigate ways to standardize best practices within the mini corps activity. Of specific note was the focus on gaining more specificity about the adjudication criteria used at competitive mini corps shows and possible ways to improve same. Standard operating issues facing all drum corps today were also reviewed. Since that time, there have been two more meetings, the most recent of which involved a representative of DCA. A positive and cooperative working relationship was forged between DCA and the nascent Mini Corps Associates (MCA) regarding advancement of this growing area of the drum and bugle corps activity. There is still more work to be done.

All involved are in agreement that any significant changes to the mini corps activity as envisioned by MCA would not take effect before this year’s DCA Mini Corps Championships. Instead, we are working within a cooperative framework to agree upon standards and slowly implement improvements to the mini corps activity at an appropriate time in the future. Despite the well chronicled rivalries that exist among the member corps, there has been close to unanimous agreement on just about all key discussion points up to now.

The above mentioned corps recognize that MCA does not represent all of the nation’s mini corps. However, it is our unanimous belief that due to the growth of this aspect of the drum corps activity, a centralized organization focused primarily on the needs of mini corps has become necessary. At this time, MCA would like to welcome any other established mini corps to participate in this process. For now, in order to be considered ‘established’, a mini corps will have to meet the membership and performance criteria presently set forth by DCA. In addition, the mini corps should have previously competed in the DCA Mini Corps World Championships. There is also a nominal fee involved to maintain a website and any incidental office expenses that may be incurred by the organization.

If your mini corps is interested in becoming part of Mini Corps Associates (MCA), please contact acting president, Rod Keppel at rkeppel1@rochester.rr.com (or at 216 Wycliff Drive, Webster, NY 14580).

A little over a year ago, Gulf Coast Sound and Frontier Drum & Bugle Corps of Texas decided that there was an immediate need for more corps in the area. With more corps locally, more shows and cheaper travel would make the summer more rewarding for everyone. In June 2005, All four active Texas Drum Corps 2 DCI (Revolution and Trinity) and 2 DCA (Gulf Coast Sound and Frontier) performed 2 concerts at the historic Alamo and Riverwalk in San Antonio. On August 6th, Gulf Coast Sound is hosting their friends and family performance with invited guests Frontier at a show entitled 'A Night of Stars'. On August 28th, Frontier is hosting Gulf Coast Sound at their friends and family performance, Brass Hysteria.

Plans for 2006 haven't been determined, but it is likely that the Texas Drum Corps Preview will return, along with A Night of Stars, Brass Hysteria, and possibly other performances.

Also in 2006, there are two new projects in development.

#1 Shreveport, Louisiana is about 3.5 hours from Dallas, 4 hours from Jackson and 6 hours from Houston, making it difficult for interested people in that area to march with any of the 3 closest All-age corps (Frontier, Jackson Generals, Gulf Coast Sound). A yahoo group has been launched to help organize people in Shreveport and help develop a corps of their own. The name Masquerade was chosen by several people in LA as a name reflective of the state and it's culture

The group can be found at:

#2 Oklahoma City is about 3.25 hours from Dallas, 6 hours from Olathe KS and 10 hours from Denver, CO, which are the three closest all-age corps to the area (Frontier, Prairie Sound, High Country Brass). A yahoo group has been launched to help organize people in Oklahoma City and help develop a corps of their own. The name Crosswinds was chosen to reflect the weather history of Oklahoma (Winds, Tornadoes), as well as the Crossing of several major cultures in what is referred to as the Indian Nation.

The group can be found at:

Oklahoma City, OK

There are also rumblings of projects in Austin, TX and Little Rock, AR, hopefully those can be added to the list soon!

With all the new growth in DCA corps, it is the hope of both Gulf Coast Sound and Frontier (as well as many other people working on new projects all over the country) that local corps and seasons can happen outside of the Northeast. Currently the closest competition for a TX area corps is 16-18 hours, over the next few years, hopefully we will see long trips be the rarity rather than the norm. Big trips for championships and regionals, with more local touring will help strengthen all corps involved and the activity.

I asked the question last year, and I ask it again... 'What have you done to strengthen the Drum Corps activity today?'
