  17.  What's the name of the Blue Stars drum major strutting around during

        "South Rampart Street Parade"?

Don Fitzgerald?

Don Fitzgerald, better known as Fitz, was the drum major in 1976. He was a lead sop in 1974 when we played South Rampart.

The person you are looking for is Billy Happel. The well known picture of him was at Whitewater in 1973.

It was a stab in the dark. Don marched with me in Mariners in 71-72 and was one of a contingent of a few guys who went to BS. Mike and Mo Collins, Rich Tucker, Dave Ory, and Don.

I talked to Don a few months back. He's a pharmacist in Atlanta now.

RobH--

Rob, thanks for adding to #6 and #22--before us old guys all die, I think we need

to get together sometime and reminisce!!

Paul Milano--

Nailed everyone you tried!! Did you know I scored 98% on my Cavie history

test for initiations in '82?? And there wasn't a Paul Milano question!!

Fastbreak--

Wags, you hammered #1, #10, #13 and #15!! I'm thinking that in '77 it was

uncle z BD#2 and fastbreak BD#4!! Somewhere at home I'll try to find a picture.

dans24103--

Dan you got #5 correct, but not #20?? Good try on #11!!

hornguard--

Toby, no, you did not score!! Hang out and gain some trivia knowledge with the

old dogs, O.K.??

BigSev--

Sev, you got #17 correct, but you also need to weigh in on #9 and #14!!

(Sorry, I didn't throw softballs like "who had the sop solo in Ponteio"?)

Does anybody get the impression like I do that some of this drum corps history needs to be archived before it is completely lost?? :(

Since you ONLY got a 98% (we had to get ALL of them correct in order to continue on through the process - we just kept taking the test until we knew them all), you may have missed the one about me.

Just kidding. Actually, I was on the test for a while (it changes from time to time).

Who was the only Cavalier to wear a short-hair wig in uniform? What year?

Regrettably (in retrospect) me, in 1973.

P.S. First drum corps I ever saw was the Mercy Catholic H.S. All-Girls. They used to practice at St. Gregory the Great school parking lot in the early 60's (60th and Oklahoma in Milwaukee). My buddies and I would ride our bicycles through their ranks, trying not to get clobbered by flag poles being lowered on our heads! We were all of about six years old. I do remember them playing a song called "More" (than the greatest love, I've ever known . . .).

P.P.S. I'll try to come up with some questions to e-mail you for your next version.

You can also catch Fitz at DCI. He has been helping out with traffic (corps bus control, on field corps control) over the last several years. I believe he will be in Denver again this year.

In respect to your question on what corps come from La Crosse - to be as accurate as I am able, there were 4-6 corps from La Crosse depending on how you look at the lineage.

Blue Stars

Blue Star Cadets

Black Hawks in the 60's

Vingers Victors in the 50's which were also known at different times as The Legion, and/or the Commanders.

Blue Stars Motto - Finis Coronat Opus - The end crowns the work

Not sure what you are looking for when it comes to the First Federal motto. They were known as the First Federal Savings and Loan Association back when they sponsored the Blue Stars. Other than that, you've got me on that one.

O.K. Big Sev--

we'll give you points for #9 (weren't the Commanders senior?), and I seem to

remember Blackhawks lining up for the Torchlight parade at Octoberfest in both

'79 and '80. (You could also add the Apple Arrows too, IMHO)

also, you have 1/2 of # 14 correct, so here's a hint for the First Federal Savings

motto: get out your Memories book from 1984 and inside you'll see a

picture of a guard member with a T-shirt on that has the motto printed on it!!

(Nobody ever said uncle z wouldn't help anyone cheat B) )
