Atlanta CorpsVets welcomes all ages for the 2006 season

Sunday, November 13th, is the open house for the Atlanta CorpsVets' 9th season. Mark your calendar and plan to be in Rockmart, Georgia for some great drum corps fun and excitement. The day will include refreshments, drum corps videos, door prizes, etc. as well as 2006 staff introductions and the opportunity to pick up a drum or bugle and play with the line.

The kick-off rehearsal for the 2006 season will follow in January, and while interested parties are always invited to visit rehearsals throughout the season, early attendance is strongly encouraged to secure your place with the 2006 Atlanta CorpsVets.

Program Coordinator Gary Hopkins is looking to build upon the success of the 2005 season. The improved, motivated, team-oriented CorpsVets again earned finalist and full member corps status, placing ninth this past September at the Drum Corps Associates World Championships in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The corps reached a milestone in 2005 by becoming an all-age organization, removing age limitations for membership consideration. This, along with the corps' primarily weekend-focused schedule, allows for a drum corps experience for those individuals who have the desire but not necessarily the time or funds to participate in a group that tours throughout out the summer.

The Atlanta CorpsVets is extremely proud to announce David Henry as 2006 Brass Caption Head. Henry received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL. He taught instrumental music at the high school level for 15 years, including 3 years at Ringgold High School, and 1 year at Lowndes High School, and 11 years as band director of Stockbridge High School. Under his direction, the Stockbridge band won several grand champion awards and one national competition: The Festival of States, St. Petersburg, FL (1996).

Henry has also been active in DCI. After marching with Spirit of Atlanta (1979, 1981), he began an instructional career with Southwind, providing drill design and marching instruction (1982), and serving as program coordinator (1983). After a brief stint as a marching instructor with the Crossmen (1985), he eventually rejoined the Southwind staff, serving as staff consultant (1989-90), and brass caption head (1991-93). Southwind won two DCI Division II titles during this time (1991, 1992).

Henry joined the staff at Spirit of Atlanta, serving as Brass Co-Caption Head (1994-96), and most recently served as music arranger/program consultant for Court of Honor (2004).

In 1998, Henry left the classroom to run his own successful consulting firm, Performance Plus Consulting, which provided a wide variety of services for drum and bugle corps, high school and college bands. These services included musical arrangements, drill design, and instructional clinics for marching, symphonic and jazz ensembles. In 2004 he returned to the classroom, accepting the band director position at his alma mater: Dalton High School.

Other staff announcements for the 2006 season will be announced soon.
