Memories of U. S. Open

Recommended Posts

I thought the US Open had the most professional looking logo in all of drum corps. A eagle inside a circle with stars and stripes making up the body and the words "US OPEN" "MARION, OHIO" and "NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP" underneath that. I have the decal under glass and at one time had a ringer tee with the same on the upper right chest. I remember how cool my friends thought that shirt was back home.

I remember the 1973 show the day AFTER the US Open. Finals had been delayed by rain (surprise) so the corps that made finals were showing up in surburban Detroit (at MY high school) one at a time.

Anaheim won that year, and so were really late.

They ended up with a police escort taking them from the freeway to the stadium, so their SceniCruiser buses, with police cars...lights on...front and back, took them down the street on the rear of the stadium then around the block (since they missed the entrance).

I don't remember who was on the field...Everyone was just watching Anaheim "arrive".

A rather starnge happening during Madison's show in 1975 !!

We were stationed in the end zone watching the OPEN class Finals, sometime during Madisons show, on of the National party walked right off the field, and one of the guard captains took his spot !!!

What was up with that ? :worthy:

Any Madison ALUMNI remember this ? :worthy:

I won't forget it !!! b**bs

I mentioned that incident in another thread a few months back. Looked like the kid was having some sort of seizure during the performance, then the DM/guard captain came over and relieved him.

I remember him standing on the field right on the end zone, seemed he wasn't sure if he should cross over to the medical staff waiting for him.

also remember the T&P judge standing right there to either encourage him to go, or to make a call - almost like a touchdown at a super bowl......

  • 2 weeks later...

My younger brother and I went to the 1975 US Open as part of a GREAT field trip (US Open, CYO, DCI). It was the only US Open I ever attended, and it was memorable for a number of reasons.

We were going to camp to save some cash. I was a member of the National Guard at that time, so I had the bright idea of getting another member's shelter half (army vets know what I'm talking about here) to combine with mine to make a pup tent. I didn't realize that mine had snaps and his had buttons, so I had to sew the two halves together by hand. Bright move, Jim!

2nd Bright Move. We had managed to bluff our way into the HS parking lot for the show. Being from Wisconsin - where beer is everywhere - we opened a cooler and sat on the back of my car having a cool one, when a cop came toward us. Not thinking we were doing anything wrong, I walked toward him, said hello, and asked him if I could help him. He replied by telling me the municipal ordinances we were breaking, the jail times and fines. I immediately dropped my beer - right on his boots! I quickly muttered something like "Crap", and quickly went to my knees to clean his cycle boots. I was just starting my second year of teaching, and I didn't want to call my principal from The Slammer! The cop had on those mirrored sunglasses so I couldn't tell his facial expression(He probably was biting the sides of his mouth to keep from laughing.). At any rate, when I got back to the car, my brother had his head down, his arms folded, and his shoulders were going up and down as he tried unsuccessfully to stifle his laughter. Can't blame him - I had it coming.

Oh yes, the corps!

Madison - I remember the horn flash before Slaughter began. More vividly, I remember the voiced inhalation before the 1st chord. One of the great telegraph jobs of all time - "Look out, we're gonna pin your ears back."

But, my fondest memory was Etobicoke. While warming up to "Send in the Clowns", a fan ran around the track with a large Canadian flag, much like at the Olympics. Then the corps turned around and just cranked through Swan Lake. Truly thrilling!

Any others out there remember that?
