When do you start learning drill?

Recommended Posts

I'm either curious about how others in DCA do things, or I'm just bored - probably both. When does your corps get outside and start moving? I saw that Cabs got an early start in Wildwood last weekend. Does anyone have the ability to start earlier and if so, do you do so?

The Buccaneers will be getting outside next weekend to begin learning our drill. The Reading weather in March can be a challenge, but I think the corps gets anxious to get outside, even if it is a little cold & wet sometimes.

The Jackson Generals started today, March 18th, and we can get through our horn book up to the closer. (We do not have it finished yet.) Guard choreography and drum book writing are both well under way, too.

BTW, we got about halfway through our opener, playing it weakly, but playing it nonetheless. This will be a good year for us. I really wish that we were able to attend DCA . . .

RCR has already started working our drill. We've almost got the entire opener learned. And the staff just posted the drill sheets for our second tune. :)

There are several corps that I know of that were putting on drill in February.A couple I know were putting on drill in January.

No, Ed. We will not be able to attend any of the championship weekend. We are only going to Orlando and Rockmart.

DCA traditionally uses the Labor Day weekend for its championships. Mississippi school systems start classes well before that. In fact, Mississippi schools will most likely start on August 1st this summer. We have a lot of band directors that have games scheduled on either Friday or Saturday of the Labor Day weekend.

We are still pretty small and new and have decided not to make members have to choose between us and their jobs just yet. It would cause too much hardship and stress to have to cart our collective butts up to DCA if it is so late into our school year.

However, if we earn some numbers by competing at both Orlando and Rockmart (rather than doing standstill exhibitions as in the past) then, by our reading of the rules, we should be allowed to compete at DCA I&E without having the corps proper attend DCA. If this is true, we have several members that would like to come to the whole weekend as loyal fans but mainly to compete in I&E. We NEED to have a presence at DCA and this might be our only way for a few years . . .

Frustrating? Yeah. But that is our reality for the time being.

See you at both shows on our "tour"? We should meet at one of them.

Take care!

Dang,,,I hate to hear that.I would love to see you guys kick some BUTT in the class A division.

Can't wait to see you guys in Rockmart.

When you guys marched off the field last year,,you had a incredible sound.I said to myself WOW>

You guys should consider doing a mini corps at Scranton.

I know several people that would like to do a MINI corps within driving distance of you.

MINI corps is very laid back compared to Class A or OPEN class.Ive seen it all from standstill performances full blown drill.

Its a lot of fun and I would probably be game for it if you guys just do a No drill show.

Thanks, Ed. Really nice words to read, for certain.

We have the same problem with a minicorps as with a full one, as most people willing to make an extra commitment are the same ones that will have the school conflict.

However, please send anyone interested in ANY sort of corps stuff in our region a link to this thread and have them PM me. We are always on the lookout for corps-friendly folks and have some non-marching activities like minicorps that we have done locally. Maybe we could get them involved at some level. A minicorps is what we were our first year when we showed up in Orlando for the little show Vic et al put on between hurricanes (2004 DCA South). That was so much fun, with our little parking lot concert being a really great experience for us. What a great group in the stands during the show, and afterwards . . . WOW!

We learn a lot at each show we get to. Maybe a separate minicorps is in our near future. We had intended on doing that but ended up trying to build up a dedicated group for field shows in Class A.

So we shall see what happens. Any friends of yours that you send our way would be most appreciated. If they PM me here I can give them most information that they might need, and Nolan can give them even the most detailed minutiae imaginable about our organization. He is also much nicer that me!

Alternatively, our website has a fully functional forum with three rooms by subject for non-members (meaning non-FORUM members, not non-CORPS members . . . we let you in if you want in, but Nolan has to approve each registration personally, so it takes a day or so for a forum membership to get approved). Once registered, we have three more closed forums that get a lot more traffic. Send your friends there and they can ask anything they want via internal PMs, emails, or public posts.

See you around!
