Jeff Ream
some things tightening up in the various captions, especially percussion. nice to see it isn't a runaway yet.
Fran Haring
Nice night.... weather was not so good earlier in the day.... some rain, hot and humid... but the skies cleared and a nice breeze kicked up before showtime. Always good to see some old friends at the Clifton show. My vantage point this week was field level, right in front of the pit ensembles. So at least I'm getting to see these shows from various angles!!!! Next weekend for us: The DCA South show in Arnold, MD, outside of Annapolis. Less than an hour from home. That is always a good thing. Fran

elphaba01
Clifton Thumbnails: The 42nd Annual "Drum Corps Grand Prix" celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Hawthorne Caballeros drum & bugle corps got off to a great start with the presentation of the colors led by the US flag section of the Caballeros Alumni corps led by 80 years "Young" Cab's & Cab's Alumni charter member Mr George Hyeck. Caballeros new "Mini Corps" the "Latin Express" treated the crowd to a trip down Hawthorne's "Memory Lane" concluding with trademark "Flamenco Cha Cha". Fran Haring did his usual outstanding job announcing the draw. Moe Knox was prowling the sideline with that ever present Kodak of his, documenting the contest for DCW. Connecticut Hurricanes are SO much improved over last year this time. JC Superstar seems a good fit for them with some fine soprano solowork and framed by a very active color guard. Look for a very steady Connecticut entry at DCA. Carolina Gold was a very nice surprise indeed. Caballero Alum Ed Griffin has done a fine job with this "Deep South" unit, and they will represent their region very well come September in upstate NY, "Senior Showdown". Bushwackers "Hi Horn" caption win was well deserved as very smooth unit cruised through a difficult music book. "Fanfare for the New" was a big hit. This is a very serious contender for late season's honors. Reading's Buccaneers extended their win and 2006 "UD" streak another notch with an almost clean sweep of all captions. "Claire De Lune" is a great production and we really liked the "Bolero" opener. The treasure map to the 2006 DCA title runs right through Pirate's Waters me heartey's....... Hawthorne Caballeros did a fine job on their "Reflections through the Future" program. The "Run & Drum" segment by their eight person snare line got a big hand as did the "Trademake" suicide wheel in the closer. Color guard work was a standout throughtout their show, highlighting some great solo brass offerings. "Alumni Showcase": Both the New York Skyliners and Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni corps served up some very memorable moments when it was their turn in the spotlight at the end of the night. Skyliners in their concert set wailed their way through some Hy Drietzer masterpieces that included "Liair", "Hymm to Victory", "New York Fantasy" "Bumble Bee" and "Elks Parade" complete with trademark "Shako Throwdown". Carl Rucco was on the podium for the "Big City" corps. Johnny "Grass" , Jimmy D'Amico were among Skyliner solo standouts. Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni marched and played their way through a full field show that included "Kerchner Klassics" "Pagliacci", "MacArthur Park" and a rearranged signature fanfare. Solo's by Frank Ponzo and the "Amigo's" were done with flair. The ageless Jimmy Russo led the "Silverbrands". As it has been the case since 1995, the "Grand Prix" was closed by a performance of the "Combined Caballeros" corps. Some 120 brass, a host of percussion, a HUGE color guard and a gaggle of soprano and trumpet soloists led by Cab's Alumni DM Russo treated the crowd to Kerchner rewrites of "Cha Cha Flamenco" and that old, OLD chestnut: "Cheery Pink & Apple Blossm White". Weather was incredibly humid, and the afternoon practice sessions of most of the corps were hit by showers.
