In watching Blue's fantastic drums this year (including 10 Snares), I thought is was interesting to see what they accomplished the last time they march 10 Snares. In 1981 (drums by Carl Gannon) they marched 10 Snares and they won the U.S. Open Class A National Championship, later that summer they were also the first Ohio corps to be a finalist in a DCI Regional, at DCI North in Yipsalanti, MI. In twenty-five years they have climbed beyond all of the expectations of the Alumni back then but, we expect them to climb higher! Go Blue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe we can get lucky and have Carl post so highlights of '81 as we watch '06 keep climbing!!!

We had a lot of great drum lines but that one was my favorite. They worked hard ,never gave up and believed in themselves. We won drums at the U.S.Open,American Open and at Ypsalanti Santa Clara tied us for first place g.e drums.Yes Keni it was an all slingerland line but was best known as part of a fine blue line that began in 1975 And still today keeps up it's tradition. If the kids today just close there eyes they will see all of those lines before them, And that makes a chain that can't be broken and thats not just lagacy, thats family .Go Blue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right there might be the reason there still is a Bluecoats.

Scott Swaldo is Ted Swaldo's son. Ted traveled with the corps in 1981 for a week mid season. After the 1982 season, and during the winter of 1982 / 83, it was announced that the Bluecoats could not field a corps for the 1983 season due to financial difficulties. This was the second time this happened to the corps in a five year span (the other year was 1979).

In the fall of 1983, Ted Swaldo stepped in voluntarily as corps director, and began the task of reviving the Bluecoats. At the first reherasal in December 1983 to begin the 1984 season preparations at the J. Babe Stearn Community Center, there were 14 people in attendance. Not a good showing. As the winter progressed, more and more people showed up, and the Bluecoats fielded 104 people for the 1984 season.

To sum up, and not get too long-winded, Ted Swaldo's interest in the activity, and specifically seeing the Bluecoats survive are to be commended. Ted never was and has been one to take credit for all of the success of the corps since it came back to the field in 1984. His business expertise, along with his ability to put together a strong team of staff and board members are why the Bluecoats are what they are today, and why you just might see a DCI Championship trophy come to Canton Ohio sometime in the next few years.

Hey Carl!!! Remember the 10 year old banana flip that was bought on the way to Canton? Was that you, or one of us hitching a ride? We had the whole discussion on whether it would survive a nuclear attack...

And the final Jeopardy question is.....

What was the last year Bluecoats marched 10 snares??

Actually we had 10 in 1994 for about two weeks in the summer. Unfotunately one had to leave due to severe foot problem. Still sad to see him go.

Dude, Bluecoat snare players are build like tanks, you can hit them with cars and they'll still march. :P
