steelpl8s
Sometimes it depends on the staff and personal preference or vision. For instance, Jersey Surf has set the drumline around April for the last 2 years. However, this year, following some staff changes, the line was set in January. There are a few horn spots still open, but not many.
Rane_Stari
At OC, I know LAST YEAR we cut alot of percussionists... and we filled up Contra/Soph/Mello quickly, but we took Baritones for awhile. Guard was filled from first camp.
Gbassman5
i'm sure most div.2/3's will take members all the way up until their tour. there are always spots in div. 2/
sopchick_01
As many have said, the percussion section is where most of the cuts happen and brass players are always in need. I always wished it were the other way around. Just imagine all those kids playing powerful power chords *sigh*. One can always dream...:) Anyway, at least thats what my experience has been like in div 2/3. :P Edited February 6, 2007 by sopchick_01

MGCpimpOtimp
...but I've heard of corps picking up local kids at different stops along their tour to get to 30 (of course these kids were just spot holders) In 04, we were stopped at a gas station in the middle of the night. There was a kid in there wearing a marching band shirt, so our DM approached him. In two days he was on tour, stayed until finals. After that summer he went to Bluecoats where he's been playing 1st sop ever since. Moral of the story: Always recruit everything, you never know what you're going to get. aklaim
Some corps have a pre determined number that they can take. A lot depends on how many bus seats you have. Like at SCVC, we only have 90 seats, so we can only take 90 kids. I believe we are shooting for 42 brass, 20 guard, and 28 percussion this year. If we do get more kids coming our for brass and guard, thats more revenue and we can rent another bus, but the plan for what we have is 90.
