StarContra4-85
If you are considering recording all of your vinyl on your computer and/or CDs, and need a new turntable the USB turntable is a very cool way to do it Thinkgeek link. It's really not any more than you'd pay for a quality turntable and it comes with software to remove the pop/hiss, etc. I've used one for a project that I was working on and was very pleased with the results. They also have a cheaper interface box that you plug into your existing turntable and your computer. I have the USB turntable on my wish list for recording all of my vinyl to MP3 and CD one of these days. B) As for the radio signal on your tapes, the wiring in your turntable or stereo was acting as an antenna... RF is very pervasive and not conducive to good health with prolonged exposure. :(
dckid80
If you really want to do a pro job and fix all the pops and hisses check out a software package called Steinberg Clean Plus. Comes with a preamp tp let you link your old non-usb turntable to you sound card via the mic input jack. Once recorded, you can edit to your hearts content. VK Alumni
I bought a vintage Gerard turntable (probably bottom of the line)a few years ago to listen to my 78's, 45's & 33's of out of print Kenton, Doris Day, and others for only $20. You could probably do the same. If the problem of your turntable is only a stylus or cartridge, you can get a great catalog from Radioshack, or go to their website. They have a huge selection of these at very good prices. The only problem or the major convenience (depending on how you look at it)is that they only deliver to your door--so the stuff isn't sold in stores. I just did a google search for the RS website and also found a place called LPGear Here's another one...Needle Doctor
