bluecoats88
I've got a spreadsheet for the top 12 with all this info including smallest and largest spreads from 1st -2nd, 1st-3rd, etc on down to 1st-12th. for instance the bluecoats have the highest ever 7th place score and that year was also the smallest spread between 1st and 7th place at only 3.95 points. Smallest spreads 1st-2nd 0 points (1996, 1999, & 2000 since there was a tie for first there was no second place) 1st-3rd 0.35 points (1978 Blue Devils) 1st-4th 0.80 points (1980 Spirit of Atlanta) 1st-5th 2.00 points (1988 Cavaliers) 1st-6th 3.20 points (1981 Bridgemen) 1st-7th 3.95 points (2007 Bluecoats) 1st-8th 6.00 points (1992 Phantom Regiment) 1st-9th 7.50 points (1992 Blue Knights) 1st-10th 8.00 points (1988 Suncoast Sound) 1st-11th 10.40 points (1988 Bluecoats) 1st-12th 12.00 points (1988 Sky Ryders)
bluecoats88
For 13th to 25th highest Scoring corps I used the last performance scores for corps in this group. 13th - 86.40 1988 Dutch boy 14th - 85.60 1988 Crossmen 15th - 85.20 1988 Freelancers 16th - 83.00 1990 Magic of Orlando 17th - 81.15 1977 Boston Crusaders 18th - 80.60 1977 North Star 19th - 80.15 2003 Capital Regiment 20th - 78.80 1977 Troopers 21st - 78.55 1977 Royal Crusaders 22nd - 78.50 1977 Argonauts 23rd - 76.35 1977 Spirit of Atlanta 24th - 74.35 1977 Wausau Story 25th - 74.25 1977 Velvet Knights According to my records in 1977 when Bridgemen were disqualified after performing in finals the final placements showed no 13th place corpsthis is why all of the 1977 corps are showing up. If I shift all corps up one spot in 1977, then the high score results change to the following. 13th - 86.40 1988 Dutch boy 14th - 85.60 1988 Crossmen 15th - 85.20 1988 Freelancers 16th - 83.00 1990 Magic of Orlando 17th - 81.05 2011 Crossmen 18th - 80.35 2010 Pacific Crest 19th - 80.15 2003 Capital Regiment 20th - 78.75 2003 Kiwanis Kavaliers 21st - 78.50 1977 Argonauts 22nd - 76.35 1977 Spirit of Atlanta 23rd - 74.925 2004 Troopers 24th - 74.25 1977 Velvet Knights 25th - 73.10 1977 Colts

N.E. Brigand
According to my records in 1977 when Bridgemen were disqualified after performing in Finals, the final placements showed no 13th place corps--this is why all of the 1977 corps are showing up. If I shift all corps up one spot in 1977, then the high score results change to the following. That's fascinating. So if the Bridgemen had not ultimately been disqualified, the Garfield Cadets would be a 13th-place Finalist (having tied with Kilties for 12th in Prelims). And those 1977 corps ranked 14th-25th in Prelims really earned those historically high scores, relative to their rank. It's only by disqualifying the Bridgemen that these other groups seem less impressive!
N.E. Brigand
Just for fun, I tried to determine which corps achieved the most impressive first-place, second-place, third-place, etc. position in a historical context, by comparing each score to the average of Finals (for the top 12) or Prelims/Semifinals scores (for the top 17) in that year. For instance, to consider first-place scores: the average Finals score in 2011 was 92.213; the Cadets scored 98.350, or 6.66% above the average. The average Finals score in 2010 was 92.696; the Blue Devils scored 98.900, or 6.69% above the average. The average Finals score in 2009 was 92.388; the Blue Devils scored 99.050, or 7.21% above the average. Of those three, the 1999 Blue Devils seemed to have most outscored their field. However, the results are most perplexing. I was looking for the overachievers, but I'm not sure what I found: 1st - 1975 Madison Scouts 2nd - 1983 Blue Devils 3rd - 1983 Santa Clara Vanguard 4th - 1983 Phantom Regiment 5th - 1980 Phantom Regiment 6th - 1980 Madison Scouts 7th - 1980 Santa Clara Vanguard 8th - 1992 Phantom Regiment 9th - 1992 Blue Knights 10th - 1979 Blue Stars 11th - 1977 Crossmen 12th - 2005 Spirit 13th - 2007 Academy 14th - 2007 Blue Stars 15th - 2007 Madison Scouts 16th - 2007 Crossmen 17th - 2007 Pacific Crest I have no idea why the years would clump together in that way! Stu
... the Cadets scored 98.350, or 6.66% above the average.... See, the numbers do not lie, Hop is the mark of the Beast!!! Edited September 2, 2011 by Stu
DanjrusMcRynky
As a side note, the highest 5th place score was actually SCV's semis performance in 2009, with a score of 95.9. It looks like we are just going by final scores, but I imagine there could be few more of those out there.
Michael Boo
... The reason no 13th place score shows up is because Garfield Cadets and Kilties both tied for 12th at the 1977 DCI World Championship Prelims. Considering that, I'd personally stick with your first list (without the adjustment).
staplestable
Also, on the contrary, do you think we could get a list of the LOWEST placing scores of each placement? It would be interesting to compare them with the highest placing scores from each placement to see if a show would have won had it been performed a different year.
