Highest scoring __ Place Shows of All Time?

Recommended Posts

On the other hand, if you do what I did for the highest scores, and try and show which corps managed the least impressive first-place, second-place, third-place, etc. position in a historical context, by comparing each score to the average of Finals or Prelims/Semifinals scores in that year, these are the results:

1st - 1988 Madison Scouts

2nd - 1988 Santa Clara Vanguard

3rd - 1975 Blue Devils

4th - 2006 Bluecoats

5th - 1979 27th Lancers

6th - 1977 Blue Stars

7th - 1974 DeLaSalle Oaklands

8th - 1996 Magic of Orlando

9th - 1980 Cavaliers

10th - 1980 Garfield Cadets

11th - 1980 North Star

12th - 1983 Sky Ryders

13th - 2011 Glassmen

14th - 1996 Kiwanis Kavaliers

15th - 1995 Velvet Knights

16th - 1996 Velvet Knights

17th - 1995 Southwind

Again, I don't know why some years clump as they do.

Some of you have WAY too much time on your hands, but I'm grateful for that. I've saved each of these in a file for possible use some year on DCI.org. And if I use your list, I've got your screen name and will give you credit for it.

  • 4 years later...

1st - 99.15 - 2002 Cavaliers / 2005 Cadets (Tie)

2nd - 98.53 - 2004 Blue Devils

3rd - 97.70 - 1998 Blue Devils

4th - 96.80 - 2008 Carolina Crown

5th - 95.65 - 2009 Santa Clara Vanguard

6th - 95.30 - 1989 Star of Indiana

7th - 94.05 - 2007 Bluecoats

8th - 91.90 - 2010 Blue Stars

9th - 90.53 - 2004 Boston Crusaders

10th - 89.10 - 1988 Suncoast Sound

11th - 87.70 - 2005 Glassmen

12th - 86.08 - 2006 2005 Spirit

I came across this interesting thread tonight - really cool stuff! Thought it'd be interesting to update the top 12 given some big scores in recent years. There were 4 changes (1st, 4th, 5th, and 12th)...

1st - 99.65 - 2014 Blue Devils

2nd - 98.53 - 2004 Blue Devils

3rd - 97.70 - 1998 Blue Devils

4th - 96.85 - 2013 Santa Clara Vanguard

5th - 95.675 - 2014 Carolina Crown

6th - 95.30 - 1989 Star of Indiana

7th - 94.05 - 2007 Bluecoats

8th - 91.90 - 2010 Blue Stars

9th - 90.53 - 2004 Boston Crusaders

10th - 89.10 - 1988 Suncoast Sound

11th - 87.70 - 2005 Glassmen

12th - 86.225 - 2014 Crossmen

A few interesting (but not surprising) observations:

  • The Blue Devils in the top 3 spots
  • 9 of 12 of these are since 2004 (this was also the case before the update!)
  • 2014 was a historically high scoring year with 3 top scores for placements 1, 5, and 12

These are interesting stats and an interesting exercise. I might just add however that these scores from some of the years listed were under a judging format ( tic system ) that has no relationship whatsoever to todays judging system ( build up system ). it would be like comparing the average NBA or NCAA points scored in the NBA playoffs or NCAA Tournament in the early years ( before the 3 point shot & the shot clock, etc other rule changes ), with the average points scored in later NBA playoffs & NCAA Tournament( with the 3 point shot & the shot clock, etc other rule changes ). I mean, we could compare these average points scored and all,.. as it is fun.... but the average points scored really can't be compared to any degree that has much value, imo.

It's a great point - appreciate you making it! For us lesser versed in the scoring system (e.g., me!), was there a particular year that the scoring system changed? Or were changes incremental, such that there is no exact year one can identify as the "transition point"? Sorry for the silly question! I find the evolution of the scores quite interesting!

Yes. DCI changed from a " Tic system " to a " Build up system " on or around the year 1978 or so.( someone else here might chime in with the exact year, as for the moment, I forget the precise year ). The early sentiment to change from a tic system to a build up system was present even before the formation of DCI. Don Angelica, an icon brass performer, arranger, judge, etc in the 1960's had pushed for a movement to change the tic system( negative tenths of points taken away for flaws in performance in evaluation scoring) to a reward based system ( rewarding good performance with addition of tenths of points in the evaluation scoring). Thanks for the question, by the way, as it shows a healthy curiosity of this great activity.
