You know, Phantom Regiment should have patent their "instrument" they used in 2008. I am talking about the noise effect in the pit, when the sword is slashed across the throat. I forget which corps used that similar sound effect last year and can't count with just 2 hands the number of marching bands I have heard use it ever since.

I remember when Phantom Regiment performed at San Diego in 2008 and I watched them practice and do a run-through. A couple of corps staff came back from a trip to Ace Hardware, trying to tweak the sound they were using for that effect.

I am not being that serious here (so don't jump all over me), but has others heard this sound effect themselves or seen this toy, like I have, since Spartacus in 2008? Has anyone heard it prior to 2008?

But, I kind of think we can put this toy to rest now and leave it on the shelves of the local hardware store and let it perform it's intended function.

I don't have the show to listen to make sure right now, but don't they just do a chime scrape? Which has been used for years and years?

Well, I was watching this closely during their practice. I remember seeing a long chain and then the staff come back and they bought something from ace hardware (it was still in the ace hardware bag) when they went to the pit. Then during a brief break in practice, I forget what they pulled out of the bag and were trying it out the noise effect with it. It wasn't used during the show and that was the last time I saw Phantom that summer. I don't recall them using the chimes for this effect either.

Would be cool to hear someone from Phantom "chime" in here and correct me where I am not correct.

Don't think it was a chime scrape - although that was used during the show at different points. It sounds more like a cymbal scrape.. but I really can't confirm it.

Pretty sure it was a gong scrape. I thought I saw them do it.

Yeah, musicians should totally stop trying to be innovative!

It's a gong scrape.

They weren't the first to do it, so why do they get to be the only ones?

Bands emulate successful corps, but claiming a single sound, one that has been used for decades, is being "copied off PR" is a bit far.
