  1. This Saturday, The Spirit of New Jersey will be on FOX in New York. They will be part of the celebration of the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club Anniversary. FOX will be there to interview Spirit about Drum Corps and the inner city. If you are near the Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse on Saturday, stop by and help celebrate.
  2. I am sorry, I do see what you are saying. Not spinning wheels. Not stroking a fire. I just misread it. As I stated above. I do wish your corps the best of luck. I look forward to seeing another east coast corps on the field in 08.
  3. After reading the full announcement, I saw a section that I feel is unprofessional and uncalled for. Especially from a corps that isn't coming out themselves. Legend wrote: "For whatever reason they have decided to not field a corps this year, I'm respect the way they have not slammed anyone and choose better yet to take the high road and be professional." From their website: "There are Drum Corps with a history that always attempts to put everything together every year at the last moment, and then find themselves in the position to fix, fix, and fix some more throughout the entire competitive season, and the only accomplishments they achieve is: Aggravation, Sunburn, Exhaustion, Poor Performance Ratings and Debt You may know of them............. So, why settle for those results?" Isn't this a slam against the struggling corps of Div3? This doesn't seem like taking the "high road." There is NO reason to have this section as part of the announcement. It indicates "quit your corps, come to my corps. We are not going anywhere or doing anything, but you will be better off here than in a corps that struggles but IS going somewhere and IS doing something." There are quite a few Div3 corps working very hard to put a corps on the field every year. Yes, at times it is a struggle for everyone of those corps. Mine included. Yet they always seem to come out and compete the best they can. Not all corps believe that competition comes first. Would it be nice to have the luxury to not have to worry about having enough members to field a corps? Absolutely. Or getting the money to tour every year? YES. Seems to me that you should put a corps on the field first before you talk about any other organization. Especially in the uprofessional manner as you have. You should look at the postings from all the other organizations in Div II-III that are not coming out. Not one puts down any other corps. I, for one, hope that Network is not as unprofessional as this post indicates.
  4. Spirit of New Jersey has 3 Bari and 1 Contra opening left to fill out their hornline. Very affordable tour fee. Contact Bigelow1@comcast.net or go to www.spiritofnewark.org
  5. Thank you for the kind words. Both soloists are at Surf and I hear they are doing well. I wish them the best of luck this year.
  6. Are you still looking for a place to march? Spirit of New Jersey has a couple of openings left in their low brass section. To complete our brass section, we are looking for 3 baritones and 1 contra. There is still time to come and join an affordable corps that offers a full drum corps experience with excellent instructors, a fun show, an affordable tour. Tour fees are only $500. Come and check us out. Come and make some new friends you never knew you had. For more info go to www.spiritofnewark.org or contact Phil Bigelow at Bigelow1@comcast.net
  7. Though I am sorry to hear that Network is not coming out this year I feel they are making the right decision to build a stronger foundation and I wish them a lot of success and the best of luck as they continue to get their corps out on the field. Good luck Network
  8. Is VK and Mystikal going to be in the Southern tour or the West Coast Tour? Is Les Stentors going on Tour? I'm really looking forward to this summer.
  9. WOW All those corps from Philly. Now there are none. :( Just outside of Philly were the: Bracken Cavaliers (Bristol Pa) Earls of Bucks (Levittown pa) Brookhaven Crusaders (Brookhaven Pa) Keystone Regiment (Marple Newtown Pa) 507 Hornets (Norwood Pa) Media Fawns (Media Pa) Cross the river in Jersey and you can add: Bordentown Little Devils (Bordentown NJ) Shadettes (Maple Shade NJ) Royaleers (Haddonfield NJ) The Vagabonds (Stratford NJ) St Marys Cadets (Glouster City NJ) Lamplighters (Lindenwold NJ) Just a few that I can remember competing against.
  10. Evaluators approve new competitive and exhibition units for participation in 2007 Summer Music Games Tour http://www.dci.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=5...80-6dffbe274e5f Congratulations to: VK Mystical Les Stentors All approved to compete in Division III Very happy to see Les Stentors back. I look forward to seeing you this summer. I wish The Buccaneers of Sacramento the best of luck as they finish their process. Two corps are being RE-evaluated. Network from Chattanooga Tn and Legends of Warren Mi. I didn't know a corps could get RE-evaluated. Any insight?
  11. I don't think that is true at all. VE got a lot of great comments on DCP. They had a real fun and entertaining show last year. By your comments of "Then a corps folds then everybody puts them down", do you mean that VE is folding? I hope not. The only negative responses I've seen with corps folding seems to be personnel attacks from members or staff from within their corps. Like some of the other responses, I am just wondering why they are keeping such a low profile.
  12. I knew of their existence as some of the kids from my corps went there. A $50 tour fee is very inviting. I am wondering if they passed their evaluation for this season and what shows can we expect to see them in? I wish them luck as they get their corps off the ground.
  13. I heard there was an evaluation for a new Division 2 corps known as Network. The are out of Memphis Tn / Patterson NJ / The Virgin Islands. Did anyone hear how they made out? I heard they have a little over 100 members.
  14. Tom Are you going to Citations gig and Parade the next day?
  15. According to JW the official rule is a 2 pt penalty for the first usage and disqualification for each usage afterwards. We were thinking about electronics for part of our show and inquired about the rules.
  16. Pittsfield Ma has the same configuration. I also remember a show back in the 70's in Havre de Grace Md where the show was literally in a parking lot about 50 yards in length and the only about 16 steps wider than the first hash. Crowd was on a hill. About 100 people having a picnic when a drum corps show appeared out of nowhere. The judges where at the top of the hill. No lines except for the parking spaces. Thats the show I'll never forget.
  17. There are still openings for anyone still looking to march this summer. Tour fees are the lowest of all the east coast corps going to Pasadena. For a tour fee of only $500 you go to to Pasadena, stay for the entire week, and while we are in Arizona, a side trip to the Grand Canyon. Come and get a great drum corps experience, tour, see some great sites, eat great food. We still have a couple openings in the brass line and a precious few in the percussion line and guard. Next rehearsal is this Saturday, March 24 12 - 8pm at St Lucy's Community Center in Newark NJ. Go to www.spiritofnewark.org to find out more. If interested in joining email Bigelow1@comcast.net
  18. If it wasn't for the small corps I marched in and everything I learned there, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to march with a major DCI corps my last two years. In Div III I saw corps with 10 horns and a small percussion line and a a small guard to some amazing things. Imagine if they had 20-25 horns with 5 snare 2 tenors 5 bass 8-12 guard. As a matter of fact, if the staffs of the lesser/rebuilding corps had more kids with the drive to learn and do, as most all of them do, then they could be just as successful as any of the top corps in II-III now. You never know, you just might find that you will get an excellent drum corps experience there too. Give a Div II-III corps a try. March the summer.
  19. For most of the time I was in Bracken Cavaliers then in 75, when Bracken folded, I joined a lot of my friends in Crossmen. Aged out in 76.
  20. I marched quite a few indoor shows in my day. It was held at color guard shows. We were always on after the guards. It was all standstill, concert formation. It was a great way to get the corps to ensemble throughout the winter in front of crowds. It was great fun. You played a 10 minute show (from what I remember) and it usually was a combo of last years music and this years music. We would replace our last years songs with this years songs as they were completed and a little polished. There were judges in the stands trying to make out what the corps was playing. Horrible accustics inside the gyms. This was popular with the corps in the mid to late 60s through the mid 70s. It also was a great wamup for performing at the old "Evening with the Corps" held at The Forum in Madison Square Garden, not to mention a great way to have the music down pat by the time you started drill. Great times. Fond memories. BTW - The Saints were an excellent corps. I competed against them many times. It really is a shame they didn't survive.
  21. Do you still want to march this summer? Did you get cut from another corps or left because of financial or time commitments? Has your corps closed operations for this season? Are you going to stay home and just practice with the parking lot DVDs? Why not march? Join a corps that is going on tour. A corps that is affordable (total tour fee is $500). A corps that is building a bright future. We even help you get sponsors to help pay the tour fee. Our next rehearsal is this Saturday 2/24 12pm at St Lucy's Community Center in Newark NJ. Contact Bigelow1@comcast.net and see how you can still have a fun summer, touring, seeing the Grand Canyon, and spending the week in Sunny Southern California.
