  1. "Tear Down" vs "Build Up". Apples and Oranges... [soapbox] Reading should *never* have received a 99.025 in '09 if judging was .. Judging... (Same with '04 Cavies getting a 99.150.) I do agree with the Spreads - but the Scores!? Please... (Watch the Vids!) No corps, junior or senior, ever deserved that kind of "almost perfect" score... (Again, watch the Vids!) Slotting is just as bad as the Tick System - and Politics plays just as great a role as ever, despite *Honest* efforts to the contrary. For the most part, now the 2nd or 3rd show of the season defines Finals Placement... (Of course, there are "Exceptions To The Rule" - as some will be more than happy to point out!) Heh... But the days when The Kilties, for example, could go from 4th at the VFW Prelims in 1964 to winning the Whole Enchilada are long gone... (When's the last time a 4th place corps at *any* National Semis/Prelims won a Championship since then!?) [/soapbox] Ok, gotta go - I know my my Asbestos Dr Dentons are around here somewhere... Heh...
  2. They were the AL *AND* VFW National Champions from 1922-1925 as well... (And the only corps to be directed by John Philip Sousa)
  3. They're listed as "Westshoremen Bonnie Scots" in the DCA Yearbooks for 1974... I can change it on Corpsreps if needed?
  4. Hurcs were 4th, Cru was 5th at Prelims with a 71.85. (Cru finished 5th at Finals behind Matadors) Corpsreps is fixed...

  7. I respectively disagree. (Grin) The sheer number of *recorded* shows BITD dwarfs the total number of contests these days... (Longer seasons, more corps, more shows) For example, each year there were various State VFW and/or AL championships (NY, PA, NJ, CA, ILL etc.), VFW and AL Nationals, CYO Nationals, Shriners International, World Open, US Open, National Dream, various Circuit Championships like Penn-York, Penn-Jersey, NY-Canadian, Red Carpet, Northeastern, Garden State, Greater New York et al. Not to mention regional shows like Fresh Air Fanfare, Mission Drums, Grand Prix, Evening With The Corps, Barnum Festival, Garfield Invitational, Hershey Invitational, Music in Motion, Serenade in Brass, Cavalcade of Drums, Cavalcade of Champions, Echoes In The Valley, Pow-Wow of Junior Champions, Nutmeg Melodies, March of Champions, Parade of Champions, Steel City Spectacle of Music, Drums in the Night, Symphony in Brass, Tournament of Drums - and LOTS more. You could buy recordings of ALL of these shows. (It might be fun to make a comprehensive list - in a separate thread, of course...) In any event, back to the topic at hand! Heh...
  8. Wasn't there a corps in the Albany area sponsored by Timex? (Simplex Minutemen, maybe?)
  9. Anaheim received a 13.0 penalty at the '73 US Open prelims - for being a day late - dropping them to 9th. They would have won Prelims if they'd been there on time... (Grin)
  10. It was also a lot easier BITD because there were so many more recordings available. It seems there was a show being recorded somewhere almost every weekend, and it wasn't unusual to find LPs of a show from a couple weeks earlier outside the stadium at the record tables.

  13. Congratulations! Sounds like you're off to a great start! Looking forward to seeing you in Baltimore...
  14. (Watching the '93 DCA vids tonight. My last "I Was There" DCAs before moving to Vegas.) 1) Hip Pickles were a GAS! Chet and The Boys really know how to warm up a crowd! 2) IMO, if there had been a Class A competition in '93, the Chieftains would have had a real shot... The show, especially "Simple Gifts", was written perfectly for the size and talent of the corps (I counted 23 horns, 8 field percussion, 3 pit and 15 CG) and the drill was right there as well - they covered the field nicely, and had a solid Color Guard. The Bari solo in "Desparado" was right on! There weren't any weak players/intonation problems standing out, and the show flowed nicely. (Kinda reminded me of Govenaires - small but mighty!) Kudos to the show designer and instructors... 3) Capital Brass Ensemble: another nice job! A little larger than Chieftains (32 horns); another solid show. (Although I'm not a fan of a "Park&Blow" soloist on the front sideline.) Reminds me of Alliance for some reason... Off to watch the rest...

  16. Just kidding! Considering I play/listen to this stuff *ALL* the time, I'll shut up now... BTW, great podcast as usual! I always look forward to your History Lessons.
  17. To not fray the thread any further, send me a PM or an email if you want more info...
  18. What corps have been named for physical structures - like the Bridgemen for the Bayonne Bridge, or the Bushwackers for the bar with the same name?

  20. Which is exactly why I doubt a combined Championships would work - or should even be considered. Alumni and Minicorps are a HUGE part of DCA Weekend. (Not to take anything away from I&Es!) [Fraying Thread] IMO, DCA Prelims should go back to Saturday during the day - and the Minicorps Championship should be on Satuday night. Daytime Prelims go back Drum Corps roots, gives fans another day out in the sun - and Hey, two Block Parties! Heh... [/Fraying Thread] DCI and DCA are different worlds, and have a different emphasis (i.e. "Education" vs "Entertainment"). Vive La Difference! In other areas, like Marketing/Publicity, pooling resources is a win/win, IMO...
  21. Agreed! It's an idea whose time has come, IMO - and I can't wait to see what happens next!
