  1. Looking at pictures, that is a nice looking stadium. Obvioulsy I have never been there, but I would be a bit concerned with noise since interstate 77 is only about 75 yards from the south-east endzone.
  2. Paging Ryan H Turner......Mr Turner to the white courtesy phone......We have full confidence that Ryan will give us another great visual book to perform. We are still searching for a guard caption head to fit our programs new direction. (Percussion also) Send your resume to President@socaldream.org
  3. The cool thing about this is that we are going to be doing one of his original pieces rather than just having someone arrange songs from a soundtrack or musical group. If you look back at our history, this is definately a different direction for our program at SCD and I think it is a great move. The music is really exciting with lots of emotion. It will definately get and keep the crowds attention and, most importantly, entertain them. Eventhough it is original music, it is nothing like many of the "I" corps' music that sometimes forgets the audience in search of a score. This music has it all. Keep an eye out for a future announcement detailing our show. For now, as Mike said, you can listen to some of his music on his MySpace page: Dr. Nash's Music
  4. Fountain Valley, CA — September 24, 2009– So Cal Dream Drum and Bugle Corps is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gary Powell Nash as Brass Composer/Arranger Dr. Nash is a native of Flint, Michigan and holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from Michigan State University. He was Associate Professor of Music Composition and Theory at Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi from 1996 until 2003. As a composer, Dr. Nash's music has been performed in all major regions of the United States and in many countries around the world including Canada, China, Philippines, Taiwan and the UK. He has received numerous grants, commissions and awards for his compositions including the Mississippi Arts Commission, American Composers Forum, Mississippi Humanities Council and Fulbright, where he was visiting Professor of Music Composition at University of the Philippines, Diliman, in 2000 and 2001. Dr. Nash's music is bright, strongly rhythmic and shaped by his musical roots and traditions in the African-American community. He is able to use blues/gospel/jazz elements and morph them into a solid, crafted style based on Western classical disciplines with a keen understanding of instrumentation and a particularly wonderful sensitivity to all types of instruments. Audiences are affected by the intense, dramatic power of his style and the intellect behind the music. Five of Dr. Nash's compositions are featured on compact disc, the latest being Tradition and Innovation (2004) for band on the CD Tradition and Innovation:150 Years at Millersville University of Pennsylvania featuring The Millersville University Band. In 2010, SoCal Dream is blazing a new path for their future and Dr. Nash's latest composition will help pave the way. As SoCal Dream returns to national competition and makes the trip to Rochester NY for Drum Corps Association (DCA) Championships, Dr. Nash's music will see a new venue in the drum & bugle corps realm. For questions about membership, staff positions, or support, contact us at director@socaldream.org
  5. On September 12th, SoCal Dream did one final performance of our 2009 show at a local college football game. The crowd really enjoyed the show and kept yelling "More! More!" as they stood to their feet after each song. They just couldn't get enough. During the show, there was one little girl that stood along the rail right in front of us. She stood there the entire time, watching in fascination. Perhaps it was the flags that drew her attention, the intense music, or maybe just our bright uniforms caught her eye. Or perhaps she was just enjoying getting her face blown off at our fff moments in the show. Whatever her motivation, I could see she was having a great time. Perhaps seeing this one show piqued her interest enough to join a middle school guard or band, continue into high school, and someday become a future member of a drum & bugle corps somewhere. These kids are our activities future. Last thought....Thanks to the entire membership of SoCal Dream, and our one plug that learned the entire show that morning before the performance, for a great evening.
  6. I knew Sam would post this before me. L'Arena is a fantastic song for the field. As for Green Hornet....
  7. These are fun horns to play. So I know there is a big price range these have sold for on Ebay and through private party, so what is your price? Reading your description, no pics are really necessary. However, is it silver, chrome, or chrome w/porcelain lined bell(these are the most rare).
  8. I have seen this chart many times in the past and have always wondered did I miss something in my education of the past. The C# above the staff shows the "most common fingering" (as stated on the bottom of the chart) as 2nd valve and D above that as open. I know that pretty much above C you can play just about any note any fingering for better tuning, (ie. double C on my Kanstul powerbore sop is more in tune with 2nd), but I have never heard of these two fingerings as the most common or preferred. Does anyone use these two fingerings as their default fingering?
  9. Congratualtions to all the corps at DCA Championships this past weekend. SoCal Dream wishes they could have been there to share the field with you. Next year...... With the season wrapping up last week, SoCal Dream has one performance to go. This Saturday night, SoCal Dream will be performing "A Supernatural Dream; The Music of Santana" for halftime at the Goldenwest College Football game in Costa Mesa. We would like to invite any drum corps enthusiasts in the area to come out for a great night of football and to see our final performance. The new "SoCal Dream Entertainment Corps" (SDC-EC) will also be providing musical entertainment for the entire game. We have prepared a book of about 30 songs so far and are looking forward to help make the atmosphere in the stadium even more exciting. SCD-EC is open to any musician that would like to participate. If you come out to the game, bring a horn and sit in with us for the game. All of the music is written for "standard" keyed instruments as well as low brass horns keyed in G. Grab your horn, come out and have a good time hangin' and playing with other corps people, then join us after the game at a local pizza place for more good times. Stadium info and map link: LeBard Stadium, on the campus of Orange Coast College Times: Call time, 5:00pm Downbeat, 5:30pm Game time, 6:00pm After party, Right after game ends till we get thrown out. Dress is casual but we request that you wear black on top. Future game dates if you wish to come out are Sept. 19th; October 3rd & 24th; November 7th(1 hour later start time) & 14th. For more information about joining the Entertainment corps, or to inquire about booking, please email our Information Officer
  10. My first thought when I heard about this is "Gillman is gonna need a bigger backyard!". This is great!! Is it July yet??
  11. Asymetric Thread: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/inde...howtopic=122158 My take on it: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/inde...t&p=2469468
  12. There are plenty of hotels in Akron for fans and lots of schools that could be approached for housing opportunities fro corps. Also, for games at least, the university has a shuttle service to all downtown parking garages. Possibly get them to run it for finals?
  13. I find this a very interesting comment and a different perspective of what is happening to drum corps. It is actually an inversion of what used to be. High school bands used to look up to and try to emulate what the corps were doing. Now the corps are more and more moving towards what the top high school programs are doing. This is evidenced by statements made when rules proposals are being done. I remember reading about the synth rule and how it was a smart move because it would open up corps to more students that dont play a horn or other percussion instrument. I have also read that DCi corps need to be more like what the current high schoolers are used to doing/seeing to be able to keep DCi alive with new fans. It used to be like when I remember seeing drum and bugle corps for the first time. Saying to myself that is so much better than what we do at school. I want to be a part of that because it is different and way cooler than what I got to do in high school. Now the thought seems to be it needs to be more simillar to attract people. I suppose that is because schools have adopted the way corps are so much, and have gotten drastically better, that determining the difference is harder and they need to keep making it closer. At one time, it was very easy to see the difference because the design concepts were different. Now the design line between marching bands and d&b corps is very blurred and, to some extent, doesn't exist. I will say I definately prefer the WGI guard style to the old school style. However, I don't want to see DCi turn into color guard accompanied by horns and battery. The guard should always add to the visual performance, but should not be the primary focus for the entire show.
  14. '04 was most definately driver error. Wasn't me, I started driving after that problem. Last year, the rental truck had problems. I should have just told them to get me a new truck if I knew it was going to be that involved to get it repaired on the road. The best part about renting, which was the final outcome last year, is that if you do breakdown, you call the company and they have to deal with it so it's not out of the corps wallet. Trailers are nice, if you have someone willing to put the wear and tear on their own vehicle. I did that this year since our pit was smaller and it was cheaper. However, I would not use my truck to go across country. The disadvantage to renting is creating a shelf system to maximize the storage. I designed a system 2 years ago that works really great and didnt cost very much. It is adaptable to any size truck. Disadvantages to owning is having to pay insurance and storage fees all year long. Then there is oil changes, tires and repairs. You never know what will happen. God forbid you have an accident on the road. With a rental, you call them up and they will exchange the truck. You reload and go on down the road. If you own it, you will end up renting a truck to get on down the road. If you do decide to go the rental route, I suggest setting up a commercial account with Budget. You will get a better rate than anyone else will give and then you can get $1m liability on the rental contract. When you set up a commercial account, tell them you are budgeted for about $7,000+ in rentals per year.
  15. As the partial article above indicates, this open to anyone. If you are in the area, and want to continue to perform after the season ends, come on out to a rehearsal and join in for some gigs. We already have 6 scheduled between September and November. Rehearsals for the "Entertainment Corps" will be held every Sunday evening from 6pm - 8pm beginning August 23rd through November 8th. Rehearsals will be at the YMCA facility off Crown Valley Parkway in Laguna Niguel. The address is: Laguna Niguel YMCA 24850 Adelanto Drive Laguna Niguel, Ca 92677 For rehearsals, you will need to bring a music stand, a 3 ring binder with at least 15 sheet protectors, and your horn of choice. The music is written for all G Bugles and standard band keyed instruments. If you plan to come play, please contact our Director of Membership at membership@SoCalDream.org, with your name and instrument so we may have a music packet ready for you. For any questions about, or to book "SoCal Dream Entertainment Corps" please contact info@SoCalDream.org
  16. I see the holiday weekend being a great weekend for DCA champs. Making a schedule change to accomodate high schoolers and college members would be a logistical nightmare anyway. When you take into account that, all across the country, school starts at different times, there is no way to accomodate everyone unless it were the first week of August (DCi champs). I know within just a 50 mile radius of me, high schools have start dates raning between August 18th and September 8th. I am sure this is probably the same story all across the country.
  17. Actually there is no longer any rule to help those with no August shows.
  18. This is not blowing my own smoke, but my favorite moment from this year was as a performer at the end of one of my solos. We went on early, as usual, but there were lots of people in the stands. I was really angry before the show and hadn't quite shaken that anger when I went through the gate or even when we started the show. I tried to push it aside and use all of my emotion in my solos. At the end of my first solo, the corps has a big fff chord and I cap it with a double B on top. I played through my solo and powered it up to cap the chord. The fans in the stands went nuts after the cut. I knew they had just heard something from us that they don't get from the DCi corps anymore. I smiled and forgot what I was angry about.
  19. We posted this quite a while ago, and we are still looking for the right person for this position. Have you worked as a tech somewhere else and you feel you are ready to move on and be top instructor? We will consider someone looking for their first cap head position if you have the right attitude and will to succeed. If you are interested, please send a resume or call the band office: rhenthorn@nmudsd.us (949)515-6325
  20. Super premium $$$$$ and you were on the 20 yard line?!?!
  21. I know you said IMHO, but I must say that unless we see a judge sheet, or hear a judge tape say, "the amps are too loud and distracting to the rest of the show", we have no way of knowing that it is affecting the score. I can say based on what I saw and heard, IMHO, that the poor balance is not affecting the music score enough becuse we continue to hear pits overbalancing the rest of the ensemble. Hey judges, tell them to get balanced or lose points. If one part of the horn line is overbalanced, you know that would affect the score.
  22. I know the other two locations were not ideal, and from what I have heard so far Indy has issues. However, beyond the issues with the venue, given the nature of the activity, I think it was a bad business decision to sign a commit to such a long term at one facility sight unseen and sound unheard. Now, by making the long term commitment to the oil can, there is no choice but to stay there and just put up with the problems. If the 10 year deal wasn't made, they could have looked for an alternate venue and moved, but DCi is now stuck with their contract.
