Hi, all: My name is Barbara Rogers and I am an alumni of the New York Skyliners and a member of the New York Skyliners Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps in the percussion section. I live on Staten Island and our island has been greatly affected by Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. Many on our island on the East Shore have lost everything. If you are in the area and would like to help, here are some locations that are getting much needed supplies to deal with the situation at hand: Carl Bini Foundation 18 Hervey Street (next to Old Bermuda Inn) Staten Island, NY (718) 412-1851 Siller Foundation Hylan Boulevard (across the street from the 122nd Precinct) Staten Island, NY (718) 987-1931 These two foundations were founded by the families of firemen who were lost in the towers. We do not need clothing but do need supplies that will help with the clean up: Disenfectant, 3 mil (or greater) garbage bags, boxes (the big ones), heavy duty gloves, masks, water, non perishable foods, baby supplies (diapers, formula, baby food, etc). One of our members who lives up in the Kingston area, Gary Bishoff, has spearheaded a trip from his area, along with his fire department, to donate a whole truck of items for our island and I just wanted to thank them all. These donations mean the world to those who have lost everything and give hope where it has been lost! It's just not Staten Island, though. It is the entire NJ shore, parts of Brooklyn and Queens too. If you're not in the area, you can always donate to the Red Cross or go onto www.silive.com or www.nj.com to find out how to donate. Is he a Skyliner? If so, I'd know those lips anywhere....

Normanly I wouldn't answer, but he IS wearing a Sky Alumni uniform. It should be easy for people who are in drum corps to recognize him...lol Just sayin...

With all due respect, I only addressed the message to you because I know you are involved in the Alumni Spectacular, as I am just a performer. Thank you for addressing my question (at least it got put out there for you to answer). You said that parking was a major consideration for 2012, what about next year? Can something be done? Maybe someone on your staff can check out the parking lot this year and assess a solution for next year? ...just sayin. I didn't talk logistics, but something to be considered to keep all the performers in one area. As a performer, it's kind of a pain to have to walk 1/2 mile to get to where the corps is warming up because you didn't have a set area to park, and god forbid if you forgot something in the car. Just a suggestion, that's all. Nothing more. Liz, I do understand what you're saying, but it would be nice, since there was so much room in there. Last year, we got turned around and had to walk 7 blocks out of our way to get from one side of the stadium to the other...then the trek back after our performance. Just sayin. If it happens, great. If not, oh well...I tried. B

Dear Mr. Peashey: With regard to the Alumni Spectacular, is it possible to let the corps members (who drive) park in the lot behind the stadium which is reserved for the busses? The busses seem to park in two locations, one over behind the office building adjacent to the corps entrance and the back parking lot for the stadium. Is it possible that you could allow the corps members park in this area also? I've noticed over the years that the members who drive have to pay to park, or walk a long distance to get to their corps, while the parking lot where the busses are is virtually empty. You could figure 8-10 busses in this area. This would save the members a whole bunch of time trying to find their corps because they have to park in the "spectator's lots" and have to pay $5-10 for the privilege. Please consider this request and thank you and your staff for all you do to make the Alumni Spectacular something that we all look forward to in Rochester. Regards, Barbara Rogers

My faux pas. I didn't think they HAD bugles back in WW1...lol (really, I'm joking). But what I was referring to was the Skyliners back when. If I can do my corps' history justice, if you weren't a veteran, you couldn't march in the corps as it was American Legion/VFW sponsored. Thus, so many corps were male only. Y'know, asking if Carmen was there when I marched is like asking if a bear s**ts in the woods. (lol) YES, I was one of Carmen's kids and YES, I miss him terribly too. Carmen was a major influence in the Garden State Circuit and I was one of his kids from '78 to '83. We need more positive influences on our kids like he was for us. A lot of the Cranford kids still keep in touch, even though they're not "kids" anymore. Who are you, by the way? Do I know you? My maiden name is Rizzolo. And I didn't even realize that my name isn't on my signature line. I'll change that now.

Bando... These men and women have FORGOTTEN more drills and music for all the years that they marched in drum corps than you will EVER remember. Get off your high horse. If you have that much of a problem with DCI/DCA/WGI judging and the caliber of product that the corps put out (especially with DCA being a weekend sport) then don't go to shows or stay with your marching band. Remember that DCA has been around since the 1960's and DCI (1970's). but Drum & Bugle Corps, if you didn't know, started as a para-military organization for all of our veterans who returned from World War II. Don't talk about drum corps who "cover" other shows...really. Okay, I'm done. Oh yeah, since you like spouting off, why didn't you sign your name? Probably because you're from one of the corps that got blasted by the judges (if you even march in DCA).

You can contact Harold Wright, Director of Spirit of Newark Drum & Bugle Corps from Newark, New Jersey. He has an inner city drum corps that has been in existence for some time now and has been successful. Harold also started a drum line which marched in the Inauguration Parade for Obama. You can find the drum corps from the link at dci.org. He will be a wealth of information to you. Tell him Barbara Rogers sent you.

As my son is soon becoming an Eagle Scout and has been involved in drum corps as a dc "brat", I picked up the Music badge book for his Music badge and lo and behold, there is a section in there about starting a drum & bugle corps. Of course, the picture was a boy scout troop from California and not Madison. Although he's had his fill with drum corps as a "roadie", he does play a mean trumpet with his jazz band and is now the lead trumpet with Curtis HS in Staten Island, NY. Barbara Rogers

Thank you Lisa for sharing this info with us. You must've been a girl scout in a previous life. :-) One thing I noticed in Saturday's show (in East Rutherford, NJ) was that the Crossmen had a color presentation with their corps flag and a flag from Texas and a guard, BUT NO AMERICAN FLAG. I think that this is a horrible show of patriotism and so unpatriotic. Anyone from Crossmen seeing this, please adjust your flag usage because it's just plain WRONG. OK, Kelli: First, the closest food store is not within walking distance of the hotel. The closest thing is a Subway across the street or the Benigan's in the lobby...and from what I saw last year with the pizza, again, it's not New York pizza. Can we do something OTHER than Pizza? Y'know it's not New York pizza, even if they do share the same state. It's got to be something in the water. I'm in...I even know where the Walmart super center is! And they do really good deli platters. (speaking as one who's run the DCA party for the last umteenth year). Barbara P.S.: Lee, did you get my invite? And we have a saying in the Skyliners about DCA Weekend..."Ya can't tell the players without a score card." This year, it'll have to expand to costal. I'm extremely excited about the idea of having a multi-corps party, rather than pizza and soda....I just have to find a beer distributor then we'll be all set. It's never too early to start the planning.

Being at the rehearsal and letting my son sit in for the first time in his life (he is 3rd generation drum corps), it was great. The instructors have done a great job getting the opener taught and played at the first rehearsal! He now wants to march. The music is great and is definitely New York Style! Anyone on the fence should come to the next rehearsal on the 17th at the Dover Post. Key Poulan is an awesome arranger and is a very good fit with the New York sound. Can't wait to hear the next number. Barbara Rogers
