  1. I was there after just getting out of the Army. One of the thing that most impressed me was that there was actually a corps there from California, Santa Clara. Who would have thought, a corps not from the northeast, or the Chicago area! They could never be any good...............
  2. I really do like the idea, but in today's world of "Show Coordinators", it has as much chance of making it onto the field as does a color pre to Battle Hymn of the Republic. I'm not trying to throw darts, just sadly being realistic.
  3. We have a winner! Don Pardo, tell Ken what he's won!!!
  4. First prize could be a weekend in Scranton. Second prize could be two weekends in Scranton!
  5. To some of the clues, Ive just got to say "piew"!
  6. What a shock to the Bucanner family & drum corps in general. If I attended a DCA show anywhere on the East coast, a Buc's practice at Twin Valley, at Buc's field or a Buc's Alumni practice; Ned was there. It was just expected; Ned would be there. If he missed a rehersal, someone would ask "is Ned OK"? I first marched with Ned in '64, the middle 70's & for 15 years in the alumni corps. When ever you saw him, his reaction was as if you were his long lost brother & he hadn't seen you in 20 years! Tom, thanks for your kind and incitefull tribute to our departed brother, Ned. Ned, you will be missed.
  7. Overheard a rumor at Rachaca on Monday that will introduce major chances to the activity for 2011. Kanstul will be introducing a new piston/rotor horn in b flat. It will have 2 rotors & one piston. This will require all horn players to be ambidexterous. The second major change is that we will seee the demise of "the pit". All DCA corps will be using glockenspiels. Of course, said glockenspiels will be amped. New t-shirts are being printed as we speak that read "Glocks Rock". I hope I'm not letting the cat out of the bag if I report, on good authority, that Reading's show for 2011 will be titled "Cleveland MMXI". I don't know about you, but I can't wait for Wildwood in 2011!
  8. The big guy doing the screaming was Mike Ferarra. Mike has played with Hawthorne for many years & played his age out year with Madison Scouts. Mike's a great guy but I just can't convince him to come over to the "Blue Team" LOL
  9. Happy Birthday, from frigid Florida, to Mr Jimmo, the unofficial mayor of beautiful downtown Guthriesville!
  10. Is that theee Ken Newman of Kenosha Kingsman fame? I had the pleasure of meeting & playing with Ken at the Galveston, TX Mardi Gras parade a few years back. Actually, more than a few, but who's counting!
  11. I had the pleasure of meeting the guy on the left at the Reading show, a few weeks ago. He brought a "ray of sunshine" into a rain delayed show day. I believe he will soon be leaving "office".
  12. Some of these clues just want to make me ralph in my cumberbun!!
  13. The Penn Cinema, in Lititz, Pa. (Lancaster County) had the audacity to put a premium charge on each ticket, bringing the price to $20 a ticket. What a total rip off. They'll never see me again.
  14. Both jr's: Ridley Park, PA Rangers: Ben-Hur 1963 Anaheim Kingsmen: King of Kings 1972?
  15. Jeff, Because of your age, you don't remember much of that night. Because of my age, I also I don't remember much of that night. Just another 2nd place to Hawthorne, as the result of poor & biased judging. Seriously, I do recall many drum corps people stopping at the 1st Howard Johnson's on the PA Turnpike, for a "free" after show meal. The food & service were so bad, it didn't deserve paid for. There was a .5 or less spread between Cabs & Reading all year. An old buddy from Reilly days, Blackie DiMarco, said to me that year, "that classical music youse guys play (Requium & Firebird) just ain't drum corps". I reminded Blackie that Les Toreador's, from Carmen was an opera. He just said "Ohhhh!"
  16. Here's a story about the 3rd guy from the "lefty". A good friend who I marched Reading with in '74 was waiting for a flight out of LAX, around 1976-1977. He saw "3rd from the lefty" and approached him, introduce himself & said, "I marched Reading in '74. 3rd from the lefty looked at him & said: "Yea, so what? Those were the day when "warm & fuzzy" didn't really describe relations between some Sr corps. Geez, I miss those days!
  17. Two all-black corps who had some great horn players: Carver Gay Blades, from Newark, NJ, as I recall. Lincoln Invaders, from South Philly. Some of these horns ended up in Archie & Reading in the '70s.
  18. If I have it correct, the Crossman is 2nd generation Reilly Raider. He's a great guy & does a solid job of playing the tube.
  19. The guy in the "Red" uniform looks alot like Patrick Fitzdaniel, or words to that effect.
  20. The Mt. Carmel, PA show was always the first show of the year, in pre-DCA years. It was on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Can you imagine that corps actually had thier shows completed & competed in the end of May!!!! The crowds in coal cracker country really loved drum corps back then.
  21. Robbie, Not sure if you knew this, but Joe Schmidts started out in Yearsley in the early 60's. Then we met up in '63 in Ridley Park.
  22. Oh, so we're supposed to name the corps? I was working on naming the people in the picture, starting from the left. I've got names as far as the 3rd row of horns completed. I think we all have figured out that the drum major was Walt Winkleman! The Salamanca comment reminds me of the "Salamanca Black Knights" from Salamanca. One of the Southern Tier's finest from back in the 60's. I seem to recall that a guy named Rocco Oliveri started with Salamanca and then went on to work with Anaheim Kingsmen. Is Rocco still involved in drum corps?
  23. Everyone knows that #3 is "Pasquale" Cossetti, the pride of Guthriesville, PA. Now #4...... looks alot like Reilly Raider vintage solist; Gene Bunning, but I'm not 100% sure, as I haven't seen him in a few years.
