  1. My drive is about 30 min of pure Houston highway traffic mess. We have some folks this year riding the grayhound bus from San Antonio (4 hours), one kid from the Dallas area (4 hours), one from Beamount (3 hours), and one rebuilding in New Orleanes (5 hours?) Even the folks in the "Houston Area" sometimes have an hour+++ drive depending on traffic.
  2. Yeah, that too! ^0^ (I am too old to hang by the buses after the shows and drool...growing up sucks!)
  3. Oh yeah, forgot one thing- The one individual that impressed me the most tonight (Other than the folks I personally know) was the head drum major for Blue Stars, Tyler. Usually I don't notice the DM at all after the folks on the field get going, but Tyler had a great presence on the podium, lots of energy, and lots of musicality. He was not just keeping time, he was drawing music out from the kids on the field. And he looks to be a young'n, so hopefully he will be around for several more years.
  4. As a chick who cannot spin anything without getting hit in the head, I am always amazed at what I see. I can tell you that I was impressed with how together everyone seemed to be in each group, usually there is one or two folks that are behind 1/2 a count, but that was not the case tonight, or at least it was not noticable. There was a lot of rifle/saber work by the groups. I think everyone is pushing the difficulty up a notch. I don't remember any big exchanges between folks, but that usually does not appear for another few weeks :)
  5. (This is a copy-paste from the DCI board: enjoy!) Scores: DCA: Govenaires: 62.088 Chops: 62.688 MN Brass Inc.: Exhibition, no score announced DCI: Blue Stars: 74.600 Cavaliers: 86.225 Blue Devils: 86.875 Random Thoughts from the night in order of apperence: (Forgive the typos...) Oh yeah-I was on the 51 yard line in row "K", pretty close to the best seats in the house! Chops: Great music selections, as usual. The marched 4 sops, 5 mellos, 3 bari/euphs, 2 contras, seemed to have several holes in the drill, but as this show is a weeknight some members maybe couldn't make it into town in time after work. Drumline is full with 5/3/4 and 4 in the pit, guard had 8. Strength of chops is the DRUMLINE-they looked great warming up in the parking lot and kicked on the field. Horn line sounded more confident and full in warm-ups than on the field, again that could be because of all the holes. Guard looked nice in blue dresses, guys in shirt and ties, all used rifles in the opener, good job all around. I bit of cleaning in the drill and some more horn sound and they will be pushing to defend their DCA title in Rochester. Govenaires: (MY HOME CORPS!) They set up with the pit on the field, and did drill around them, using the put to hide props and guard pretty effectivly. The hornline was 5-2-6-2, drumline was 3-2-3 and 2 cymbal, 6 in the pit and 10 guard. The group started a bit slow, but got in the swing quickly and showed a ton of energy, GREAT CLOSER, hot hornline. Drill needs some cleaning (Doesn't everyones?), but they have a great show and the talent to pull it off. I picked the Govies over Chops by about a point, but I am a bit biased Look for a 2 MN corps in the top 3 at DCA yet again! (The third will be from Houston... ) Blue Stars: I saw the Blue Stars for many years in the 80s and 90s. After reading about Blue Stars for the past few weeks, I couldn't wait to see the bigger, improved group. When they started my friends and I were thinking "Yeah, they got larger, looks and sounds good", then they gave us the first big hit of the show. Holy S***! Where did THAT come from? It was great, out of nowhere, in tune and balanced and everything. It took 20 seconds of show to make believers of everyone in that stadium-GREAT JOB! Louds were incredible, softs were beautiful, I was hooked. They did a bit of narration, which I know will bug some folks, but it was tasteful and not too loud or long and did not cover any of the beautiful music they were playing. The show flows together very well, the kids looked very confident marching, and they gave us a very entertaining show. They have some typical things to clean-horn angles, some individual marching styles, some dirty forms, but nothing really stuck out as a flaw. After seeing this and knowing they are not scoring in the top 12, I am thinking that this may be the best year of drum corps in a long time! Blue Devils: These guys gave us exactly what we were expecting-super confident, huge presence on the field, very clean most of the time, great music. In one part of the show the hornline did some chanting, but we could not figure out what they were saying. I have to admit I am not much of a "Godfather" movie fan, so I likely did not get all the references to the movie (Like the flag designs?). While watching the show I knew I was witnessing something great, but when it was over I have to admit nothing really stuck with me-no cool drill moves or horn licks or whatever. For me this is a show I can appriciate for the difficultly and how well they are performing it, but it just is not one of my favorites. I can say the guys sitting above me loved it, so I am likely the only weird one. Cavaliers: OK, after reading about this show for several months I was a bit concerned. See, I went to this show with some people pretty new to drum corps, and when I heard the Cavaliers show was a bit like "Frameworks" and pretty abstract I was thinking that the people I was sitting with wouldn't get the show. For myself, I can appriciate "Frameworks" now after seeing it several times and growing up a bit, but it took some time. I think I can safely say that all my fears were for nothing. The Cavies show was great! They marching on the field together doing the "Robot" thing, the drum major salute fit right in, the drill and horn moves were great. I won't give all the cool stuff away, but I can tell you that the 3 and 6 year olds sitting a few rows down loved it and were clapping and laughing the whole time. I and the people around me were saying "Cool" and "Sweet-did you see that?" throughout the show to each other, it was very entertaining. Earlier in the season some folks were commenting on DCP that the show did not have any melody, but I really liked the musical selections and could find several sections that I wanted to hear again. It has some cleaning to do yet-lines are not aways straight (When they are supposed to be...got to see the show to get it), and a few kids have some marching style stuff to work on. I do not think the hornline was as powerful as BD's. I have to admit I did not watch the drumline much because there was so much other stuff to see, but they had some very cool visuals and sounded good. IN THE UPCOMING WEEKS: I think Cavaliers will clean up a bit and overtake BD in about a week, but it will stay close. I really want to see Blue Star get into top 12-after seeing the show tonight they deserve to be there. MN Brass: Exhibition (Judges were on the field, so maybe a score will show up eventually. They were the only DCA-open class group at the show) Brass put on a great show as always. The hornline is smoking, great solo work, and just in case a few of you were wondering there are NO horns in the pit area during the show. They have some movable staging they use very effectivly to showcase solos, hide guard equpiment, and some other surprises at the end. The guard was hot, a few drops in the rifle work, but they where consistanly together and really lit up the field. There is a small section where I think they are still missing the rifle work, but I am sure that will get added in before too long. The show is high energy, very colorful, and very entertaining. OVERALL-GREAT SHOW. No corps had a major breakdown, everyone was entertaining and got a standing-ovation. The only downside was no finale/encorps. Just drum majors to get medels after 1/2 the stadium had already left for the night. It was a bit of a let down to sit for 5-10 min, get the scores, then head to the parking lots. Am I the only person who misses the "Show after the show"?

  7. My Bad. There will be video and/or pictures on the GCS website soon. Use the "Media" tab at the top of the page to access them.
  8. The 2nd annual Texas Drum Corps Preview was Saturday 6-24 in Austin. Here are some random thoughts from the day: Location-Texas State Capital Steps. Pretty cool. There was free parking all around because it was the weekend, and a big park about a block away for the groups to practice and warm-up. Lots of locals hanging around and checking the groups out in the park. One bad thing-very few restrooms, and the girls was locked tight But, the park did have drinking fountains, so that was cool. And lots of trees for shade, a must in Texas. The Capital had plenty of room for all the groups to arch up to play and do guard work, and the echo from the surronding buildings was very cool. Oh yeah, the lady at the library next door does not like it when the horn line warms up under the window in the reading room. First up: Gulf Coast Sound---DCA Class A (Biased opinion...) We looked great in our new uniforms, but some alterations need to be done yet. I think we sounded pretty good, not the best of the year (And it gets better every day!), but not too bad. Our guard has work for the whole show done, but I guess it was kinda messy (From their mouth, not mine. I can't see anything but Nicki during a show) It was very cool when our big hit in Unchained Melody echoed throughout downtown! Thanks to Trinity for letting me use some of your pit stuff! 2nd: Trinity---DCI Div III (?) I hung around the drum line and pit in the park when they were warming up, they have REALLY improved over last year, and even since we saw them at Drum Corps Tigars in May. I don't know the real numbers, but they are about twice the size of last year I think. Cool music from what I heard, did not get to see much of the performance because I was sitting with equipment. I am not sure they have the whole show yet, the performance seemed a bit short. They did the show in jeans and tee-shirts, but you knew they meant business by the great way they marched on and off stage-someone has done their basics! 3rd: Frontier---DCA Open Class Frontier is also bigger than last year, and is sounding pretty good. They have pretty clean, crisp guard work for the first 1/3 or so of the show. Guard looked good in red tops with black pants, corp was in full uniform from last year. Cool duet in the ballad with a contra and a something (Bari??? I don't remember). My snare buddy next to me said they had a good line and has improved from last year, and he knows way more about that then me! 4th: Revolution---DCI Div I They used the "Dr. Beat" during each song, but over that they sounded great. Full sound, good balance, pretty good tuning, and all that good stuff. They only part I could see was the guard, who where on the top of the steps instead of below like the other groups. They did great, the rifle work was very fast and cool, and we only saw one saber drop later in the show. Guard was in all random black, not sure if that is there uniform or if they are waiting for something to come in, but it was nice looking either way. The corps looked great in full uniform, marched on and off stage very well-head up, roll steps, the whole package. Finale---All horns from the 4 groups After Revolution all 4 hornlines mixed up and played "Texas our Texas" and "America the Beautiful" on the capital steps, which was by this time lit up with the setting sun. It was very cool, and they got the echo thing as well. The crowd was a few hundred folks I guess, a mixture of family and random locals, some we recogized as people we talked to in the park and invited them to the show. I think everyone had a great time, and afterwards there were a few get-togethers at the clubs downtown, as well as the random hanging-out in the parking lot after the show. If you missed this year (Or even if you made it), make plans to come out next year....watch for details, uh, sometime this winter...

  10. Everyone needs to come out and see us! Free Drum Corps this Saturday Night!!!
  11. There is a plan in the works...stay tuned!!! And we could really use another corps at our first home competition, if anyone can come to Houston on July 29th we should by dry by then :P
  12. When I was in Govies everyone in the corps lived within about 40 miles of St. Peter. We had big weekend camps, but also shorter practices, concerts, and parades in between because everyone was close by. They are a close knit great bunch of folks that represent "Minnesota Nice" very well, and I am glad I was a part of it and get to see them at least once a year and cheer them on at Finals. It seems that a lot of Corps have folks that fly in for practice or drive several hours (Or days) to make it to camps. Anyone can be good by pulling in talent from all over the country, but Govies are great with just the local folks that have a passion for Drum Corps. (I am not slamming the folks that travel to get to practice, instead I am in awe of your dedication and wish I did that instead of taking 8 years off because I moved away from home.) Some people on DCP love to talk about how Corps don't represent their hometowns anymore, but everyone in the St. Peter area recognize the Govies and support them. Small corps are great! Less $$$ for transportation, housing, food, equipment, uniforms, and easier to find places where everyone can fit inside for a party :P
  13. Thanks Brent! Now that the "killer charts" are on the field you should come on back and take a look. The thermometer will not be on fire this weekend (Hey, we have not seen the sun in days here), but GCS will be HOT :P
  14. I think it is getting too late in the spring to change tour dates and shows, as well as raising membership fees after kids have already made a commitment. The best idea for this summer may be to get parents and alumni to work on fundrasing, finding corperate sponsers, etc. Having the kids do car washes, clinics, parades, and anything else to raise some money during the summer can help too-every buck counts! BTW-the cheap unleaded gas in Houston is about $2.95 a gallon, and we live by the oil, refineries, and huge shipping port. Our corps has already put off equipment purchases for this summer in order to raise the gas budget, but we still look and sound great!
  15. Good luck guys! If you have a group that wants to play in July we would love to have you at our home show!
  16. Our staff and other corps members remind each other all the time to put on sunscreen and hats and such during rehersals. Also, we try to do sectionals inside from 1-3 or so, and take an extended lunch around 4 to keep us out of the sun at least part of the time in the afternoon. Some breaks are mandatory "Shade" breaks, where everyone is supposed to get out of the sun and find some water. We set up a few of the pop-up shade thingies on the sidelines for breaks, several members bring them so it is no cost to the corps. My first corp burn in the last 2 years came a few weeks ago during a car wash. I am a fanatic about sunscreen for practices, but sometimes forget for shorter events. I was miserable for a week---make sure you apply sunscreen for all events, even if they are not a 12 hour camp. I know a few DCA corps wear sunglasses as part of their uniform-maybe this is a trend we should all get into?
  17. At the Houston Marq*E with a bunch of folks from Gulf Coast Sound. (Hopefully the cute guys in the Cavies jackets from last year will show up again!)
  18. Yeah, but we have a Tom and a Nicki and a Andy and a.....Every bus ride is a party! Anyone who flys to shows or misses a parade takes a week or more to catch up on all the jokes. Seriously, after the Mardi Gras weekend I hurt for a week every time I tried to stand up because my tummy hurt from laughing so hard. Yeah, sitting on a bus or driving a van for 20 hours sucks, but sometimes the journey is as important as the destination. (Not that I would turn down plane tickets if someone wanted to donate them to me!)
  19. Yeah, yeah, I guess your off the hook for this year :) But...we are expecting you to visit next year! (Who doesn't love drum corps in July in Houston???) On another note-I know when we were working on budget and plans for this summer gas was around $3.00 a gallon, and we alternate between buses and vans for trips. This did effect our spending plan, and likely made other corps think twice before planning long trips.
  20. Weather this weekend in Houston will be sunny and low-mid 80s...what a perfect weekend to be outside! Break out the sunscreen! (You know you would rather march than do yard work this weekend) Our first gig is 2 months away!
  21. "If you don't have anything nice to day, don't say anything at all". (Yes, I know a forum is for discussing, but the random #####ing is getting on my nerves.) I am a current DCA member who grew up watching DCM shows live and DCI shows on TV. I have loved most of what I have seen. Some new stuff I liked, some I didn't. I played some stuff over and over and over again, or traveled hours to see groups out of state. For stuff I didn't like, I would appriciate how much work went into the idea-costumes, music, marching, guard work, and everything else. I would never boo in a stadium or bash anyone in a public forum that I knew worked hours on something and tried it just try and entertain me and 1000s of my closest friends. I may not buy a CD that year-big deal. DCI, DCA, BOA, whatever-everyone is working hard to entertain us. Quit putting ANY group down-it makes all musicans look bad. (Not to mention that many of us have belonged to more than one performing group in our lives.) With all the cuts in music education and the lack of time everyone has, I am greatful for any group that can get together and do any kind of show-it keeps me from sitting on the computer or wasting time in other ways. Any "bad" drum corps show is still better than 95% of what's on TV! If a vocal coach is what the Cadets need to bring out the best in the kids, then I say bring it on! I will not pass judgement until I see it, and if I don't like it I will focus on the stuff that I really loved instead. 22. The parents have a right to there opinons of course, but it sounds to me like they were a *bit* rude in the way they went about expressing them. Demanding that she be fired over this one video clip, telling the local press she was showing satanic materials to there kids...come on. This is why good teachers leave the schools to work somewhere else-they are expected to be professional all the time on un-profesional paychecks, and they get treated with more rudeness than the local waitresses or high-school kid checking you out of Walmart. (Yes, I have done all 3) From the article: Waggoner (The music teacher) acknowledges it will be difficult for her to remain in Bennett. "I know I'm not accepted here, that I'm not welcome here by the parents," she said. "It's a very uncomfortable position." Does anyone deserve this after a showing a 10 minute video that was made FOR KIDS???
  23. (Wouldn't it be funny if the football team had to fundraise too? and if the band and football team got the same amount of that tax money? It is true that the football team "brings in the gate money" for games, but there are a lot of band and cheerleader and dance team parents in the stands paying the football team to see their kids perform) Sorry...off my soap box. resume debate!
  24. MADISON SCOUTS!!! They were the only big corps to consistently play in and around my hometown of Mankato MN. We (Huge group of high school band chicks) would cheer for the Govies and MN Brass like crazy because of the friends we had marching, but we went NUTS over the Scouts (We usually had 1-2 of our band kids in Scouts as well!). Whenever they were getting lined up in the end-zone across the goal line with the white pants and shoes they looked so BIG compared to everyone else, and they had such a presence just waiting for the previous corps to get off the field-serious and silent, no messing around or looking for lost equipment. They were always under the lights, and everything was always polished up and looking great. They started performing before they left the practice area and did not let up until they hit the buses When they went to attention EVERYONE in the stands would fall silent and watch as they starting marching in one huge company front. As they would get closer to the 50 the crowd would start getting louder and louder, and when they broke on the 50 into the fleur-de-leis the whole place would explode. It was awesome, very different from everyone else and SUCH a cool way to get on the field (PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!) Of course, after that they would play a choral to warm-up, the drums would go nuts on their final run-through, and everyone in the stands would be on their feet and yelling again. At this point it almost did not matter what they did in their show…of course it was always loud and proud and great! (Of course, there were always a few scouts in particular that were *special* to us!) Barbara Wendt Govies 1996 Gulf Coast Sound 2005-2006 and beyond
  25. Hey Dutch Boy, there is a group in Texas who are desperately trying to find a way to fund a trip to Madison (Or anywhere else under 110 degrees in the shade) to see the show!!! The first time I saw the movie I thought it would be cool to do 1 or 2 tunes as part of a show. I just wish you could add a bit of the Draidel (sp?) Song from the South Park Christmas Special into the mix-that song is amazing! Good Luck-We Can’t Wait! Barb Wendt Govies 1996 Gulf Coast Sound 2005-2006 and beyond…
