  1. Lee, I've been playing mine usually through my headset, but I just did a check with my 5.1 external (you should hear my wife screaming "LOWER THAT") and the timing is perfect. Are you having the problem at one particular point or with the whole show? I check only up to the opening notes after their "Blue Era" chanting. Further, I only used my computer DVD player, I haven't tried in the living room TV because I don't have 5.1 there Joe Dziezawiec
  2. Wow! Can't miss this one.... Best wishes for continued growth and success. Joe Dziezawiec
  3. Hmmmmmmmm..........how might I blame DCI?......... Let's see............. In 1954 twelve men, who later formed DCI, managed to have themselves appointed by then-president Eisenhower to assist the French during the battle of Dien Bien Phu. The battle occurred between March and May 1954, and culminated in a massive French defeat that effectively ended the war. This led to the French "La Holde' de Bag" maneuver (AKA turn over the reins to the good old USA), as part of the Geneva Accords of 1954, which simultaneously established DCI initially with 3,678 junior corps. The number was quickly reduced to 3,677 when the entire Hard Luck Cadets Junior D & B corps was drafted into service in support of the operation. The rest is history........ I think......... Joe
  4. Play one note one time. The next time you play it you are hopefully competing with the first time you played it. Joe
  5. Jim, Yes.........it was Harmony.......... I know that they sponsored a contest annually.........I think they WERE a D & B as I recall that Stetson record.......... but then, we're talking 40+ years ago. Thanks, Joe
  6. In another thread about St. Kevin's 1964/65 show, someone posted that the draft during the Vietnam War days played a role in depleting corps. I posted the following reply which I feel belongs on it's own thread: "It's true about the role of the military draft...............somewhat. At the urging of a drummer friend with whom I worked part time after school at Planter's Peanuts, I attended the "Starlight Drum Fiesta" contest hosted by St. Brendan's Cadets in Clifton NJ Stadium (home of the Grand Prix) in 1962. Our Lady of Lorreto won. I loved that sound and soon joined Fairlawn (NJ) Police Cadets 1963 (one contest...Ridgewood NJ....last place......folded........later merged with Dumont Police Cadets without me). In 1966 while in college, along with group of friends, sponsored "Brass by Night" (no relation to the Fleetwood album, but that's where we picked the contest name) junior contest at Hinchliffe Stadium, Paterson (lost our shirts!) Joined Doremus Sr in 1966..... good parade corps......we organized for field for 1967...... held first outdoor practice Sunday........got draft notice Monday. (Caught hell in basic training on "rear march" by adding mark-time-2 automatically)" ----------THIS WAS NOT IN POST-------------- While I was in the service (1967-70 active duty), MANY corps folded......... the draft was taking boys off the street who were prime local drum corps types.........good character, physical shape, etc... I couldn't join since then because I stayed in military through Reserves and National Guard for 23 additional years..... -----------RESUMING ORIGINAL POST--------- "Haven't marched a step since..... still die hard corps fan, particularly first love Cabs. Tried getting back into....... became instructor for Paterson Crusaders indoor color guard.....one year......corps folded Waited almost 20 years (didn't want to put a curse on anyone else)........ became volunteer webmaster for Garden State Circuit (lots of work on a nice website)..... then had my dream come true.... hosted GSC opening show at my school (Passaic County Tech, Wayne NJ) in June, 2002 ....EVERY corps in the circuit competed including two division IV corps and exhibition by Jersey Surf and Bushwackers ..(circuit folded at end of season). I wanted to get back in some day and probably will. Who wants to fold next? Maybe I should march with The Taliban Cadets???? Thanks a lot, Uncle Sam (Made a lot of drum corps friends through RAMD..... Bklyn Mario....fellow teacher who I still have not met.) 8. I saw Ralph's list of corps for RCA and it listed but one from NJ. I seem to remember a corps from Boonton, NJ having a 45 RPM Stet Richmond recording from an RCA show....... I'm not sure at all, just speculating that there may be one. Joe Dz. NJ
  9. I'm with Brian on that...........maybe we "don't want to know" how much our hobby costs..... kinda "don't ask, don't tell." Anyway, my real purpose for this reply goes back to an earlier post where the information assembled might be useful on April 15. Unless you have some new plan, expenses incurred on a "hobby" do not qualify for tax deductions. On the other hand, any income gained from the hobby DOES count towards taxable income. It's still an interesting survey and with DCA members being so diverse, I'd say that the "average" in any category is probably just that.....average (mean). I encourage you to include median and mode with a scatter chart as well to see the "bell curve" of expenses. Whatever the expense, it's still going to be less than professional therapy sessions.....by a lot! Joe Dz US Army Ret
  10. I sent my nomination today and also sent an email to Moe to thank him for his contributions to the activity. Here is a personal excerpt from my email that probably reflects the same experiences as many of you concerning Moe: "Moe, It was an honor to submit a nomination for your inclusion into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame today. .... My father arranged for me to get a copy of Drum Corps News delivered during the year I was stationed in Korea. I read that paper from cover-to-cover and didn’t miss a word. Then I re-read it and put it away for the next day. Needless to say, “Photo by Moe Knox” played such an important part of keeping my sanity and connection to home while stationed so far away. I thank you for all you’ve done to memorialize mere “instants” and have those instants combine to give a 50 year history of an activity that represents the best in America and the world. Yours in drum corps,...." Joe Dziezawiec Fairlawn Police Cadets 1964 Doremus Sr 1966-67
  11. Thank you for the review......is this event held same date/location every year? I would gladly take a 4 hr drive from North Jersey to support these fine men and women. Now that I am retired from my full time teaching (35 years) and military (3 yrs full, 23 reserve) Army/National Guard/Army Reserve career of 26 years, I'm ready to give some time if A N Y one wants to get an Army D & B corps going within an hour of North Jersey (West Point?) 12. I also felt the volume was low. In the years I've been buying Alumni and Finals, I've been disappointed with the video quality I'd expect from professionals: shakes, missed cuts, poor aim, partial fades, etc.... A suggestion to Baker........have an additional camera on high view of the field constantly recording. When you come to a "blip" in the show, do an insert edit (such a thing exists) to cover the video blip.......you can even do a post production zoom to the part of the picture that best covers the blip and ADDS to the show. I would love to have seen what happened at the start of the 2006 Bridgemen show when someone off camera, who was being talked to by the announcer, crunched something in the end zone...... but.........we'll never know. I thought that the job on the Empire show was the best full coverage I've seen Baker do. (Some post production work could even had improved that) Joe Dz Go Cabs !
