  1. Weeks ago would have been after finals. He was with the corps in Pasadena.
  2. I think if they used them in a different way where it was an accent vs. a main feature of the uniform, they'd be there, but not in such an overpowering form.
  3. Do you have PC on there twice because you're trying to say something??? j/k I love their unis, but they haven't changed since 1999. Doesn't even have to be a full change... add an accessory or something, I dunno. I also agree about BK needing a change... but I'd like them to bring back the dots!
  4. :( That blows. I hope he gets picked up by a corps that appreciates the work he can do! It's not like his track record isn't great!! Good luck this year with MV though!!!
  5. I've thought about this a few times. In the off season this could be a good money maker for corps. Arts integration is a pretty big theme in the education world right now. Having teachers incorporate art and core subjects not only provides another access point for students, but also a creative outlet. This is especially true in elementary school where there is the most need. This isn't where I see the corps fitting in though... I used to work at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. We had a program there that was a roster of artists that we helped schools book for assemblies and performances. ALL of these artists had an educational component - either cultural or historical... and some of them got into science (like the percussion guy with all the wierd instruments that taught about sound waves) and math (origami, dancers). Often schools paid upwards of $1000 for one performance of some of the bigger groups. Because of performance facilities, most schools ended up having two or three performances. You can do the math. All it would take is a 5-10 person ensemble and a show that has an educational component (math and geometry?) The program at OCPAC was a spin off of another roster at the Kennedy Center.... as was the arts integration program there. Stepping off my soapbox now... but just thought I'd throw it out there. edit: to clarify thoughts....
  6. They didn't say it was the most attended EVER... just in the last 10 years I believe. I wonder if they're having difficulty getting a firm count because they weren't using the barcode readers on tickets like they do at Ticketmaster/pro sports events. I guess there's a drawback to saving money in that way. The rumor I heard that day (from a reliable source) was that there were 30,000 tickets sold when they closed the box office on Friday night. As to how many tickets were bought that day and how many actually showed up... who knows.
  7. Good to know... at least there's a decent reason... sounds horrible but it looked like a missed direction change that night. Hope she's feeling better!
  8. IMO - Sounds like you were taking too many chances and your having a good time fell consequence to them. Next time buy your tickets earlier and if the corps you wanted to see is on the edge of making finals, buy semi tickets just in case. I was personally glad to see so many people at Finals. How they do it every year for the Rose Bowl, I have no idea. Then again, it's somewhat acceptable to leave/enter the stands during the game. edit: spelling
  9. Not that I know of. I distinctly remember a tinge of disappointment in 99 when BK came in 7th at Semis because we didn't make the live broadcast and Glassmen did.
  10. It only used to be top 6 that got featured when it was on PBS... so this is a bonus compared to that. I just think it's great DCI's even on ESPN 2. At least it's something people are more likely to trip across.
  11. Interesting idea... very labor intensive... but interesting. I wonder if all the corps would chip in the $$ to have the person on DCI's staff.
  12. And I'm sure there's plenty of us development professionals who are corps alums looking to a) subsidize the non-profit habit we've already got B) want to help out the activity any way we can. Just a side note though... fundraising is supposed to be a main function of the board of directors, but I read a study last week that only 35% of non-profit boards even talk about the subject, let alone do anything. SO... another option to hiring someone is to maybe have board of directors retreats across the country with an established fundraiser to get these boards into the right midset. Maybe do one in the west, one in the midwest and another in the east.
  13. I don't think so either... but I'd still like more girls than just the guard to watch it. There's a slight obsession with Cavies at the HS I write for... I'd like the girls to know that it's not just guys that get to play. Disproportionate or not, high school marching bands are (in most cases) co-ed... so are most corps. I'd just like them to see that similarity. I'm not a feminazi... no worries... I'm not gonna call NOW on DCI... I'm just expressing a thought. I've already emailed DCI about it... It's just one more poster...
  14. What might be nice is if there were one or two up there with female drummers and/or horn players. Specifically pit. I'd like to show that drum corps horn players/drummers don't have to be guys to march corps. Just a thought...
  15. To each their own, but there are also members out there that are loyal to a corps as long as a corps is loyal to them. If there's some staffer that comes in and uproots everything to make it their own, how likely are they to stay? Take a look at some of these corps that have had some significant staff turnover in the past couple of years... some of them are not necessarily producing the quality that they once were. I think I'm just looking at it from the angle of the corps whose staff member(s) left vs. the one that's got the $$ to lure them away. I'm sure at least some of these guys are under multi-year agreements, although my bet is that a majority of them go year to year. I've never been involved in those kinds of discussions though... I'd be interested in hearing how the admin side of it works in some of those top corps. I dunno... maybe it's the coffee talking... or lack thereof
  16. I'll play... I think you'd have issues keeping members in one spot for too long as well. People sometimes choose a corps based on the staff. They are naturally hesitant to accept change as well... especially when it's not necessary.
  17. I think it's a matter of who you know and what your priorities are. I design right now... but only for one little school in North Phoenix because I've got other stuff going on (work, grad school) that prevents me from doing much more (that and I'm still learning!!). Goodness only knows what's going to happen once I have kids. Also... A disproportionate number of women are in the guard than in the horn or drum lines. Granted, there are some guard people who make darn good drillwriters, but I'd venture to say that majority of them think of their involvement as teaching guard technique/writing work. I was a horn player... my choices were brass or visual... musical staging is just as important as visual staging, but a little more difficult to execute. Just my 2 cents...
  18. I still won't touch purple drink... although my husband swears it's THE best kool aid flavor. I still use DCT, although I don't play on a regular basis anymore.
  19. Shameless plug for the drillwriter's forum... link in my siggy...
