  1. I really don't like repeats. It was doable in the days before recording was SO widespread (I know that they had LPs back in the day, but I'm sure they didn't sell like the CD's/DVD's) and you could repeat a chart or two per year. But repeating a whole show, especially dusting off an old classic, seems to me to be a sure recipe for competitive stagnation.
  2. There was an article in Harper's(?) about the 1994 Boston Crusaders. The catch phrase was "the ring of chrome." Great stuff. I thought about transcribing it to RAMD in the good old days, but didn't. Do I still have the article? Of course not.
  3. Song is "Lord of the Dance" Dance then, wherever you may be I am the Lord of the dance, said He And I'll lead you all wherever you may be And I'll lead you all in the dance, said He And the camp was Camp Nawakwa, Arendtsville...
  4. Vanguard did "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" in 1980, but no, Evita's never been done as an entire show. I think "Chicago" would be a really interesting show.
  5. Yes, that is indeed Bones in 1992, at the hit midway through Appalachian Morning. Based on the color of the sky, the photo is from Quarterfinals. The shows improved every night during the week for the corps, but I felt that Q-finals was my best individual performance.
  6. No Czech Republic in 1860 - Austro-Hungarian Empire. Otherwise, you are correct.
  7. Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
  8. They both were good. Now you can voice your opinion on which was better. What else do you have to do while waiting for the DCI replay on ESPN2?
  9. Paul Cain, our tour manager in 92, used to whistle the "ding-dong" interval (descending minor third). Although since I was on the field lining crew, I sometimes missed that gentle nudge.
  10. Star 1990 is weighed in the balance and found worthy... SCV 1992 is a fan favorite - no, it does not hold a candle performance-or-design wise to other Vanguard shows, but it is a sentimental choice.
  11. Original recording...do you mean the pre-season BD recording? (Concord Pavilion?)
  12. Cadets 1987 Blue Devils 1982 Madison 1995 Phantom 1979 Cavaliers 2004 Spirit 1978 SCV 1992 Star 1990 Bluecoats 2006 Crossmen 2001 Troopers 1975 Suncoast Sound 1986
  13. Said before an exhibition to "motivate" us... "If you s*** the bed tonight, I will kill you."
  14. Gibbs's first year with the corps might have been 74, but he did not succeed to the directorship until 1991. Jerry Seawright until 1982, I think. Michael Moxley 1983-1990
  15. Velvet Knights 1992. When that shark came out finals night, the fans utterly lost it.
  16. Um, really? I remember nothing of the sort. What did he actually say? Jog my memory.
  17. According to his BD staff page, Jay joined the BD staff in 1981, designed the CG from 1981-85 and assumed the role of overall visual design in 1986.
  18. Of course, in Cadets-land, (I believe) Sacktig learned from Sylvester who learned from Zingali. Michael Gaines marched Cavies from 87-90 and learned under Brubaker, I'm sure. So there is a direct connection. And Jay Murphy of BD has been at his stuff a long time - since 1986, to be exact.
  19. It's funny how this keeps coming back... I asked for "Memories of George Zingali" on RAMD over ten years ago and received many responses. If you simply go to Google Groups, type in rec.arts.marching.drumcorps for your newsgroup and search "George Zingali" you will receive many other hits as well. You can find Bill Cook's tale of the story of Zingali's creation of the mirror-image crosses in 1991 on Star of Indiana's "History" page. In the many years I have been on RAMD and DCP it is Zingali and Gail Royer who seem to be the most fascinating and beloved people in DCI's history - in terms of people wanting to hear "stories" about them.
