  1. alright, I'll bite. I'm Natalie, and I'll be making my second trip from Cali to audition for PR. Conductor and Trumpet. Other than that, i'm waiting to see which (if any) corps will add a flügelhorn line.
  2. PR: "Dracula"- Philip Glass The Cadets 4:33 -John Cage (this isn't supposed to be a jab at the cadets btw, i just think they could pull off complete silence and use it to their advantage) maybe some percy grainger?
  3. I think the poll kind of explains what i'm getting at here. is it ok to wear your corps jacket to a show if you marched with a corps that is currently inactive/folded? I've already received some rude glares and comments from people because of what happened to the corps i marched with... is my previous hard work less important just because that corps no longer fields? would it be an issue if i wore the jacket to a show? thanks everyone.
  4. (carb) Breakfast casserole- potato, onion, and like 3 different cheeses. and a small bowl of knockoff lucky charms with luke warm soy milk. Lunch- Nachos! ( supposed to be taco salad but i skipped the lettuce) Tortilla chips with the works. side of red rice and a red drink. Dinner - Dinty Moore Beef Stew over White rice, green beens and peaches on the side and a nice tall plastic cup of 50% red 50% orange. XXL pigs in a blanket and an oreo . cup of either orange or purple.
  5. Just wanted to chime in here... When I heard rumors that the Kingsmen had plans to form an Alumni Corps and eventually a junior corps, I went straight to the website. There’s already a feature there to request to be sent membership information when the Starcorps is ready to hold auditions. I signed up immediately. Whenever I see the KAC ( twice so far and looking forward to Semis) I know that...should the Starcorps come to the field before my age out...it is most definitely something I want to be a part of. So for me the recruiting efforts worked.
  6. ok, i know I'm not a regular around here but here is what i know about how we (people currently of marching age) choose where to march. to add more corps, you need members to march in them. It would be wise to fill the spots we have now before adding a new system and having new corps pop up. someone asked...what do incoming members want from drum corps? what are they looking for? what will make them march certain corps? . The uniform- i know...it seems lame, but this is a pretty big factor. I know people who wouldn't be caught dead marching (insert corps name here) because of the cut/color/ general look of their uniform. . CLINICS- when marching drum corps...incoming members want to feel like they are part of the elite. being part of instructional clinics where the corps members are the example being watched by middle and high school bandies is a MAJOR ego boost. that boost...and setting the example for younger kids is a great incentive to join a certain corps. . TRADITION AND HISTORY- when corps shopping...kids are looking to work for the super stars. the people everyone watch. and who are the corps with the largest number of stable loyal fans??? corps with Alumni. the older the corp is...the more people know about them and watch them because they share a common bond. older corps had a much larger opportunity to display their PERSONALITY. corps that were around during the time of post show concerts in the lot, Full corps retreats, playing off the field, nightly encores, plus many other similar things that no longer exist had an opportunity to show the character and personality of their corps to the public and future members. answer this...what is SCV's corps song? most, if not all of you out there can answer that... now...what about Esperanza? Scades? KK? PC? Impulse? Mystical? I don't know a logistically sound way to do it...but these types of things outside the show are how corps build their reputations and get their personalities known to the public. In this era of drum corps...members choose the corps they will audition for, and/or corps they are willing to march based on the personality of the corp. this includes their music selections, Traditions, attitude (in and out of uniform) and all those other little quirks that make up the corps spirit. to put that much effort into a show...you have to agree with what the corps represents. To the average high school kid, there are only a few corps with personalities present enough to be appealing. they choose what fits them...and then it's that or bust. if lower tier and div II/III corps can find a way to show what their corps are all about...there's a better chance they will bring in members. sorry if this is a bit rant-ish or slurred...i can't type as fast as i think of things to say.
  7. i'm not enstein but i will say this... if you didn't already know the story of Faust ( or know of the many movie versions and parodies) it was possible to watch the show and not really understand the story part of what was going on. You heard great music, and watched great visuals...but what those random guys in black were doing made little to no sense. i read the book while on tour...so i guess i got to see both sides, knowing the story and not having a clue.
  8. Hearing my first live show ( that wasn't the corp i was in) ...scv 2004 from the inside of a port-o-potty just off the field (long story) while preparing for the after show concert. The first...no wait...every time i watch a phantom conductor pull out the baton. Crown's 2004 show..."Seasons of love" rock out section (4 minutes and 34 seconds on the finals recording for those of you keeping score) ...gets my vote for best use of vocals...except for possibly... the Cavies fight club sequence Esperanza 2005- hit right after the quintet in the ballad. (quintet starts at 5:04) one night at rehearsal...lightning struck just in time for the hits ( 5:47 and 6:10 and a huge one at the hit at 6:49) ...you just can't make moments like those...once in a lifetime.
  9. From what i know, Florida is being more and more tricky with it's laws regarding large groups of minors traveling in the state. For this reason, many people ( including myself) were not allowed to go participate in the DCI honor Corp. i remember there being something about a " minor to responsible adult ratio" within each traveling group in the state. as far as finals in Cali...rock on! 1 time and you whine? come on... <**> suck it up :P
  10. i don't know about SCV, but the RCC cymbal line does this move as a sort of tribute to them and a friend of mine on the line got his nose shattered by a plate while rehearsing it. (this is why the question of..."how many sets are we taking?" should always be asked if there is confusion. )
  11. Lol, thanks. i was wondering when someone would mention that. i was about 5 hours away from getting a bonus year...grrrr.
  12. i brought my little sister to an Esperanza camp just after her 13th birthday. she marched in 2006 and is now marching with VK. she beat me for youngest person to ever be in the corp by a year.
  13. there are no mellophone players...only people who switched to mello from something else. like me...switched from trumpet. (btw...i'm totally there for the camp this weekend...wish me luck)
  14. i'll be playing in San Diego at Ft. Rosecrans if anyone would like to join the buglers there also.
  15. Esperanza's "Five" also used music by Philip Glass( Heroes symphony) and Eric Whitacre (October). just to clear that up. :P
  16. I seem to remember a few significant incidents of "Bad Blood" between the academy and E. particularly events of Academy members in their corp jackets harassing E members and the souvie crew. <**> i dunno if those events are what the op of that statement was talking about though.
  17. ok, here's some more information you might not have heard. As with many corps...when you become a member of the Esperanza Organization, you sign a contract that includes a section stating that you agree never to assume representation of the corp on any public forum. meaning that any members ( and i assume staff) that have posted in this topic or any other one and have said anything about esperanza or it's business practices...are in breech of the very contract that also holds their financial obligations to the corp. whether that be ingoing or outgoing money. i know this because i am the mother of a member...probably one of the few if not the only one who plans on at least attending the march camp. my child won't post here out of fear of breaking that contract...but she does read. those of you outwardly saying you hope for the doom of this corp...shame on you. to down talk someones memories and experiences...to wish for the break-up of a family...it's upsetting. no matter what the circumstances. my daughter read this entire thread and said this..." The people who are talking about giving up on san diego for drum corp...that's total ****. Esperanza means hope. the corp was named that because it is just that. hope for drum corp in san diego. mistakes happen. this one was huge...but that is no excuse to give up on SD." ...there you go.
  18. Thanks for mentioning your corp...again. this information is great for others on this message board. Due to family circumstances, i am not allowed to march in a division II or III corp. That is why it is posted only in the division I section. ...long story. anyway...thank you and Good luck to you and all the other div. II and III corps out there.
  19. I am just wondering if anyone has any advice or stories to share about joining a corp late in the season. how did you end up there? what was it like? also...if anyone knows of any open spots in Div. 1 if you could respond that would be great. Thanks.
  20. Espana Cani anyone? most spanish charts really hit the spot in drum corp. La Suerte de los tontos these are close...i dunno about being better than malaguena.
  21. everything on that list is an actual reason someone i know personally joined a certain corp. #14, well yes. that's me. the story of my personal frustration and anger that leads me into a cycle of marching with the same developing group. lol...would it be fair to say that my reason for marching is DCP? or rather... my yearning desire for approval on DCP. there's #15. the most modern answer." i joined because i wanted to make people to talk about me on DCP but don't mind not being shown on the espn broadcast."
  22. i can't really post everything i'd like to tell you but if you'd like, i'll PM it. i just can't put it here on DCP. the following is a list of ACTUAL reasons people i know have joined/stayed with a lesser known/lower scoring/ rebuilding/ etc...corp. 1. came for experience before auditioning for a ''Big Name" 2. Local corps are less expensive to get to (in most cases) 3. Friends that joined with you aren't ready/ don't want to leave yet and you planned on auditioning for another corp together. 4. got Cut from a big name 5. you personally know staff at this corp and they asked you to come. 6. you made so many friends in the corp the scores don't matter 7. significant other in the corp 8. you are hoping to eventually be named leadership in this corp so you can help boost it up/put it on your resume 9. you only have 1 year available to march and don't want to deal with the rookie hazing that goes on in ( name of other corp) 10. the corp director was your band director/ instructor of some sort and you feel the need to repay him by joining his corp. 11. you figure...being in div. 1 gets more fans even if you lose than another division will 12. Never marched before/ never played a brass instrument before and you think this will be the only corp that will put up with that. 13. you don't really care about your own score as long as you get to watch ( big corp name here) in the lot every night on tour. 14. you joined thinking things were going to get better, but because of some of the people mentioned above you get frustrated and eventually forget why you even bother. then as you go on the field and max out your show...no matter how it scores...it feels good. and even though you know in the back of your head that most of the audience is getting a hot dog right now...or that their clapping is just sympathetic...you can at least PRETEND that they enjoyed it. then you can come home...go on DCP...and read reviews of the big corps shows...and then you remember that you really didn't matter all that much to anyone but your own family at your home show and were just the pre-show for the big corps. you get angry...and out of that anger...join the same corp again next year in order to give those people who didn't bother to review your show...something to write about. ok...sorry if 14 seemed rant-ish...but you wanted honest answers...that's as honest as it gets.
