  1. That was the "Crow call" just before the Scouts big hit at the beginning of each show. I believe it started in 75 (maybe 74) by Tom Acheson while he was a marching member and I assume it continued while he was on staff in the late 70's and early 80's. The "crow" was also there for the alumni project in 06.
  2. That was in Baraboo, an hour outside of Madison, where the Scouts held everydays for a few years. Their winter camps were held in Waunakee. Its been quite a while since they've rehearsed in Madison. Believe me, as a person involved in every flight, bus ride etc. for the 3 years prior to last winter, getting members and staff in and out of Madison in the winter is a major ordeal. I couldn't agree with "craiga" more. I am happy to see the Scouts and others doing what they have to do to adapt to the new world of drum corps. Do I miss the Scouts being around in the winter, sure I do. But one year later I can see that what they are doing is in fact working and I couldn't be happier for them. And as usual thanks to Chris for coming on here and laying out the facts for everyone. Also thanks to Chris for getting the corps straightened out financially and competitively. GO SCOUTS. Can't wait for the 2011 product to hit the field.
  3. I think the FU-15 may be more appropriate. Beer works for me thirdcoast.
  4. We had vistalites in the Scouts the first part of the season in 1976. The were multi-colored with the "Madison Stripe". They were scrapped along with the disco show. If I remember we couldn't keep them tuned and they warped in hot sun.
  5. I didn't march in '73 but I believe they switched to the Aussie hats (the real floppy ones) mid year in '73.
  6. Left to right: Mark Murray, Craig Matthews, Larry Stormer(I think), Laki Theo and Joe Murray
  7. Me for one. I may be a "dino" but I auditioned for the Scouts for bass drum or tenor before the 1975 season. I was told I could march bass 4 (which was bigger than me) or be the cymbal section leader. I chose cymbals and loved every second of it. There are only 135 people (or was it 128 then) that can say they marched in the 1975 Scouts and I'm proud to say I'm one of them. The only thing I didn't like about the Scouts 2010 show was the guard playing the cymbal line parts in Slaughter. I loved the guard but they're not percussionists.
  8. Yeah Geno, We know what you're sayin', everyone up here in Madison knows the Bears "stink".
  9. A little Scouts trivia: The owner of the bowling alley marched in the Scouts from 73-76 and 06 alumni project. The previous owner (his father) marched in the Scouts from 1938-1941 and also in the 06 alumni project.
  10. I voted for SCV 04. I hadn't seen drum corps in 10 years and their drumline blew me away. Phantom 08 is a very close 2nd though.
  11. That worked out pretty well for John I'd say.
  12. I heard that the missing flag was returned to SCV sometime within the last 5 to 10 years.
  13. Your cooler in the aisle of the bus next to your seat was the "food truck' (and beer stash).
  14. 1. 97 2. 95 3. 99 4. 96 5. 94 6. 98 7. 92 8. 91 9. 93 10. 90
  15. I picked 2010 because I loved it, I got to relive my youth a bit but mainly because its the ONLY show from this decade. Not to nit pick but all of these polls have 11 years in the first decade of the 21st century, it just doesn't work that way. One of those things that get under my skin like the misuse of the words to & too, there and their, etc. Also 2001 is a close 2nd for me.
  16. Knowing Jim Mason the show is already ready to go for 2011 and they're just waiting to hand out music at the first camp.
  17. Not to nit pick but as defending champions Santa Clara chose to go on after the Scouts in 1975. I still think of that night often and more than anything remember the crowd standing in a big wave when we turned with the big hit at the end of the way we were.
  18. Gotta agree Tupac, It was very cool seeing our skinny selves from back in the day on the big screen. The guys really brought it last night, couldn't be happier with their performance. When they mistakenly announced Boston with a score of 88. something the theater in Madison went nuts then a big collective groan when they put up their real score.
  19. If any local alumni are going to the theater tonight in Madison some of us are getting together at UNO's (just down the street on Mineral Point Rd) at around 4pm. If you can make it give Dan V. a call at 608-279-5272, he's working some deals out with UNO's if we have enough people. GO SCOUTS!!!
  20. I was at VFW in 1969 and remember getting a corps photo taken just after we came off the field (at about 8 am if I think). There was a set of bleachers that we stood on. Whether this was an "official" photo I do not know but is listed on the Eau Claire drum corps web site as "1969 official photo". www.ecdrumcorps.org under E C Boys 1969
  21. My Guess: 9th: Scouts 90.0 10th: BAC 89.9 11th BK 89.5 12th Glassmen 88.8 (maybe Colts slipping into 12th)
  22. If you don't have the people at the theater turn the bass down you will hear A LOT of synth bass to a point where you may want to just say to hell with it and leave.
  23. Hey Thirdcoast, are you making it to the theater next Thursday or are you still working nights?? I'd buy you a beer to wash down the crow. Mike
