  2. umm.... you might want to listen to a recording of Phantom Regiment 1984. Their opener that year was Scythian Suite, just like this year. Yes, alumni/reunion corps do this quite well. But often times they play the same arrangements with the same slow-moving drill. Modern corps could change these songs to make them more exciting for the "modern viewer." I'm not suggesting that everyone go out there and do exact replicas of old shows. Yeah, that would be boring with what we are used to today. Just take old corps classics and adapt them for today's drum corps.
  3. Not many of my friends who are my age are big drum corps fans. As for the ones who are, I seriously doubt they know anything about what was going on in drum corps pre-2000. In fact, I'm sad to say that I was in the same boat until a few months ago. I mean, when I marched in 2003 I had no idea why it was significant that The Cadets were playing Rocky Point Holiday and doing this "z-pull" thing everyone was talking about b**bs Looking back, I wish I had known about it then. What I wouldn't give to see that show live again, only this time informed.
  4. The Cavaliers - 1999 (for sentimental reasons, 2003 otherwise) Phantom Regiment - 2003 Blue Devils - 1982 Bluecoats - 2003 The Cadets - 2006 (for the music, not the bunny) Santa Clara Vanguard - 2004 Blue Knights - 2002 Carolina Crown - 1997 Madison Scouts - 1996 Boston Crusaders - 2000 Glassmen - 2006 Spirit - 1980
  5. Coming from the person who started this topic, I would first like to say that I aged out in 2003. Over the past few months I have been doing a lot of reading about drum corps history. I have also been listening to a lot of old recordings that I have come across. Now, whenever I decide to sit down and listen to drum corps, I find myself choosing to listen to the older recordings. They are just more enjoyable to ME. I'm not saying that they are to everyone, that's just MY choice. I've read some people mentioning the Madison Scouts Alumni Corps in this topic. I think they are an example and why this idea would work. Everyone loved their performance. The older people liked it because they were hearing old songs from their past. The younger people liked it because it was just an overall enjoyable show. Now imagine if you did the same music from that show with faster, updated drill and music. Some say keep the past in the past. Are you saying you never want to hear anyone play Malaguena or Rocky Point Holiday again? You must have really hated Spirit's opener this year or half of Boston's show last year. I mean, God forbid the Cavaliers actually play a show with a MELODY ^0^ I'm not meaning to sound like an old-timer saying that Drum Corps now sucks, go back to how it used to be, because like I said, I aged out in 2003. I love drum corps now. I went to 4 shows this year, 3 of which were over 100 miles away. I purchased APDs which I have played over and over again. My idea was just that, a fun idea. I didn't think it was something that was ever really going to happen.
  6. I think it would be a great idea if one year in the near future every corps goes back to its roots and plays songs that they are or were once famous for playing. To make it better they could even bring back old uniforms. Here are some suggestions for what some shows could be: The Cavaliers: Bully, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Summertime (Porgy and Bess), Somewhere Over the Rainbow Blue Devils: Channel One Suite, Spanish Fantasy, Ya Gotta Try, Conquistador Phantom Regiment:Scythian Suite, Bacchanale, Shostakovich: Fifth Symphony, Fourth Movement Madison Scouts: Malaguena, Malaga, Slaughter on 10th Avenue, Strawberry Soup The Cadets: Rocky Point Holiday, Maria (West Side Story), Overture to Candide Santa Clara Vanguard: Fiddler on the Roof Bluecoats: Autumn Leaves, Caravan, ? Boston Crusaders: Bolero, El Capitan, Ninth Symphony (Ode to Joy), Conquest Spirit: Georgia on My Mind, Old Man River, Sweet Georgia Brown As for the "newer" corps that aren't really known for anything... maybe they could play old drum corps favorites from other corps.
  7. Because we are voting in 2006? This is Terrance I.McGee we are talking about here... don't take it so seriously
  8. Yes, they both aged out a while ago. Read his question, he said "Overall List of Two Past Greats. What do you think?"
  9. There are four videos up of the Madison Alumni Corps performance at semifinals on youtube. I won't post the link here, I will let you find it.
  10. There must be something about Southwind and years that end in an even number. Since moving to Lexington: They finished 13th in 2000 (1 spot from finals) and 18th (one spot from semifinals) in 2002, 2004 and now it looks like 2006.

  13. I find it interesting that whenever someone has something bad to say about amps or narriation they always turn to The Cadets. What about the other corps using it? The Crossmen have an entire section of their show made to sound like someone surfing around on a radio. To me, that a lot more obnoxious than someone singing during a ballad. I'm not saying I dont' like it. I can see the reasoning for them doing it, it fits their show. The Cadets and all the other corps using narriation have put a great deal of thought into their show design and wouldn't have put it in there unless they thought it was necessary. I am tired of everyone constantly bashing on The Cadets. If you are going to criticise something be sure to remember everyone who falls into the same boat. To me, it seems like sometimes it's not really the amps or narriation that bothers people so much, it's George Hopkins. People are just using the amps as an excuse to bash someone who is only trying to change the activity, as he believes, is for the better. Now that I got that out of my system let me say this. I have been reading this board all summer and haven't commented about any of the Cadets bashing. I was just going to try and stay out of it. I loved last years show, it is one of my all-time favorites. I saw them this year early in the season and didn't really care for it, it didn't make much sense to me. However, I saw them in Atlanta and gained a whole new opinion of them. In fact, I was one of the few people in my section that gave them a standing ovation. Yeah, the talking during the drum solo was a little distracting, but I got over it and focused on something else in the show that I liked. So maybe everyone else should try to do the same thing. Find something positive to focus on. If you don't like the entire show then go get a hot dog or something.

  15. I know there have been tons of topics in the past about everyone's favorite ballad. I figured I would make a poll about it. I know there are more great ballads than the ones I listed, but I couldn't have 50 choices so I narrowed it down to 12.
