  1. If there as good as you say they are then great job. I saw them at the friends and family show and it was pretty rough but they have obviously put in a ton of work since then. I hate it that two of their best years came after I had to leave for a while(2004) and after I age out(2007). Oh well, congrats Teal Sound and Im glad my work payed off.
  2. Ok, so I haven't marched for two years now and I'm back for my age-out. I was looking at the schedule and noticed hat there are two days in-between prelims and semi's. Why is that? Also, what was wrong with the old schedule of Monday through Wendesday? I remember the change being made in 2003 to a different schedule, but peonally I hate the idea of Grand-Finals being in the morning. If the change was made to get more attendance for the 2/3 crowd is it working? I can't think of too many people who would wake up extra early to see 2/3 Grands, or would spend the extra money on another ticket. I've been out of it for too long.
  3. I remember they did an exhibition in 2002, because Revo did theirs and then on the loud speaker they said the Division 2 Champion won't perform in exhibition because they are competing in Finals.

  6. Don't let a staff overhaul fool you, in 2004 there was a large turnover and look what it did for them. ALL HAIL!
  7. For me it's how emotional the music is. I think the Cadets did a great job choosing this show because the music is perfect for a field. Think about it, its the music of a Disney Fireworks show, it was composed to be exciting and pull at the heart and the Cadets played the #### out of it and thats what did it for me.
  8. I would go with simply for the depth you can get with 5 basses. As a writer I find working with 5 basses is very optimal becasue it works well with runs and when using the basses for add-in cresecendo effects 5 basses is especially effective, especially when tuned right.
  9. Star 91/93, Magic 97, Cadets 2000, Cavies 2000, SCV 87, Phantom 03, Madison 95.
  10. Scott does help write but I'm sure Dave Glydd does most of it, and I believe he's been writing the books for awhile. I'm not trying to flame or start an arguement, just saying.
  11. Dude, that bassline is up there every year. Pick a year from the past five years and you've got the best bassline in DCI. Scott doesn't write, Dave Glyde does.
  12. I know this is bottom bas girls, but...... The fine female in Spirits tenor line last year was I nice new addition the the DCI drumline world.
  13. I agree, very good drumming. Its cool to hear each track and hear the evolution of style and the gradual inclusion of the pit. I have to say though, some of those hornlines sounded bad. I'm not trying to bag on old drum corps but hearing the arguments about the old days, I don't se where it comes from, once you started to hit the late 80's and 90's it improved greatly, but before that some of it is downright unmusical.
  14. I'm showing my youth here but the guy that comes to mind who can scream and play a really gorgeous ballad would be the BD guy from 2000(maybe before that)-2001. Good tone, could scream, and played some nice mid range and ballad stuff.
  15. Yes most corps do use licks over and over but the snare "solo" the past three years has been very, VERY, similar. Also, I believe he is also talking about the accelled roll part that is 16th based with accents on the downbeat and the ah of the rythm. That section has been exactly the same. I think this lick gets talked about alot becuase it is very open and prevalent. The Cavaliers used a lick three years in a row also, starting in 2000. the rythm is 1& &3 4& &2 3& & with 1& 4& 3 being snare and tenor rimshots and &3 &2 & & being bass hits. In 2000 it is right before the brick house section and 2001 it is right towards the end of the show, I can't remember where it is in 2002 but it is there.
  16. Hey Ryan, whats up. Nice post. The only thing is, when it comes to the cleanest line winning that is half true, there is also the uniformity of technique side of the score. So yes, Cadets were clean, but uniform, I did not think so. And like you said, its my opinion, and thats all this post was, a way for people to exchange opinions. So if you think I'm wrong ok, I'll just tell you why I think I'm right, but is anyone definetely right, no.
  17. Magic of Orlando. I know they're back but for me its two totally different corps. Two different musical styles, visual styles, and on the fielf when I see them I just don't think Magic of Orlando.
  18. I have also heard tapes by Todd Fox. He's not the best... but he's not bad. So, why is it that Todd Fox is bad because his scores are lower than Charlie Poole? Couldn't the reverse be true? Isn't it possible that Charlie gave you too high a score? I commend you on your "####-clean" quad playing, but it's impossible to catch everything that's going on. It's only possible to get a sampling of each section at different parts of the show. So he missed your quad break... big deal. I don't care how many tapes you've listened to, or how trained you think your ears are... I still don't think you're qualified to label Todd Fox a bad judge. Jim No, I do not think Charlie Pool gave us too high a score. Why? Compare our score and the Cadets of NYC at both shows. They dropped slightly with Todd Fox but stayed high box 4, we dropped 2 full points, and we are not worse than they are. Also, if you read what I said about the quad breaks, he didn't even attempt to go over and listen to them, every other judge we had this year, including Allen Christianson, once they hard we were the only ones playing came over to hear how we played the parts. Also, I don't think I know how well my ears are trained, I know what I hear and can tell dirt from clean.
  19. Did not know that video was taken in Dallas, I retract that statement and apologize. But Istill stand b the rest of my arguement.
  20. Translation... Certain judges, like Todd Fox, are not as in to what my line does as are other judges. He repeatedly gives my line bad scores, so he obviously must not know what he's talking about. It's not possible that he just assigns more value to different things than other judges. My extensive experience within the activity is certainly enough to see a bad judge when I see one. [/sarcasm] Seriously though. Who the #### are you? Whether Todd Fox is a good judge or not, YOU haven't the right, nor likely the knowledge with only two years marching experience, to say he's not. Jim Who am I? I am i marching member who has studied this activity extensively and listened to many audio recording of drumlines and trained my ears and my eyes to se what my OPINION of a good drumline is. On the subject of Todd Fox. I do not say he is a bad judge because he dumped my line's scores. I don't work like that. I say he is a bad judge becuase the comments he makes on tapes. This year in our opener there are two quad break, basically one right after another. Is he there for either one of them, nope, does he make the attempt to come over after noticing we are the only instrument in the batery playing, BOTH TIMES, nope, does he say anything about it on the tapes, nope, and by the way, they were ####-clean.Also, he dumped Madison earlier this year and he also dumped Lehigh Valley at the Grand Haven show last year. It's not just isolated to Teal. Plus, when Charlie Pool gives us a 16.8 and a 17.5 and then we get better and Todd Fox gives us a 15.6, I think somethings wrong. Now, why I think Cadets should not have won drums: Their uniformity of technique was not better than Phantom, Boston, Cavaliers, SCV. Musically(as in the shaping of the music) Phantom, Boston, and SCV were better. And in my opinion Boston was better. Also, watch the basses only video on vicfirth.com, they incorrectly play alot of rythms for a drumline that is so head and shoulders above everyone else. Now, I know it is the total package but in my opinion Phantom should have won drums.
