  1. I believe that is 1980 in 79 we didnt have the scoops under the snares. And that isnt Krebsie as the drum major who was in 79. and l know that isnt 79. Dusty
  2. Sounds good, maybe we should put the word out about that year for us. That was an amazing year.
  3. I was a member of the hornline, Bari, we did so much cardio and breathing exercises that winter, knowing we were small but that no one would outlast us,, strong to the last note. Difficult program, non stop playing.. Man that was drumcorps Dusty G Norwood MA Continentals, 67-70 21st Lancers Norwood MA 70-77 Boston Crusaders 78-79
  4. Was in that cyo show.. not the same when it wasnt at BC that was the best place for it.. from what l remember Boston College was building a new stadium or renovating it.. Plus a national show during the afternoon doestn cut it.. all should be under the lights.. how bout the word BYFBO. any horn player should know what that stands for...
  5. Hope l didnt upset to many with my last posting, but tradionalist here. gues those days are gone recruiting by grabbing a kid and bringing him to rehearsal and giving him a horn and teaching him. I couldnt believe how some corp was it Blue Devils or Blue Coats that ruined the retreat at this years finals with blowing all the wrong notes on their sops oppsssss, im sorry Trumpets.. see got carried away again. Back in our day that would never happen. To much respect for other corps even though we didnt say it. No matter how we felt about the score, woudl come to attention and stand taller then any others. I do wish some corp or corps would have the balls to do a retro show and not care bout what DCI thinks or the scores.. do it for them and the fans... Glad l was born when l was so l got to enjoy marching from 67-79. Dusty BAC 1979 age out yeah l am old school and old :)
  6. Oh you can write one for it. Imagine Boris into the jazz version of conquest. I was in drum corps from 67-79. 67-69 Norwood Continentals, 70-77 21st Lancers, 78-79 Boston. Not many could handle the writings of Ed Dennon. Mondo Cano 2 adn Vikings and well the smoothness of Califonia Dreaming.. so inspiring... If corps had the balls to just make a historical show it would be phenomenal. and please get away from the 3 valves things. You cant even join a corps anymore or pull someone off the street now.. glorified marching bands now.. set up for highschool and college players.. Dusty
  7. I have a olds ultratone 2 Soprano valvle rotary in mint condition.. and a two valve getzen in mint shape. The olds was a soprano l well picked up in 74 and the getzen l found on ebay bout 10 yrs ago.. Dusty BAC 77-79
  8. Yes and no also, I was a member of the Crusaders from 77-79 my age out year.. Bari. 79 we had a 25 man horn line that matched up with anyone in sound, technique and clean. I remember that year going thru the winter and spring doing so many breathing exercises and lots of conditioning becuase we were small and it paid off. They now are a finalist for 10 yrs and have to play the DCI game now. I would love to see a greatest hits show of Boris off the line, Vikings for production number, have into California Dreaming and finally Conquest. With the arrangments now l know they could do it and get away with it but you all are going to hate this.. to me it isnt Drum Corps anymore,,, not with tryouts and such. it is glorified college musicians. Gone are the days of taking anyone off the street teaching them to play and going from there. We didnt fear anyone and never would. Not many in the saders horn line could read music proficiently. Hell, l took my music home and wrote the notes out and the length. Bring back the power hornlines and drum lines of the 70's. Someone should have some BALLS to do a show like that and not care wht the judges think.. Do it for the Corps and do it for the fans... nuff said Dusty, BAC 77-79
  9. Just want all the readers of this thread know, l just read this and wanted to pass it on.. It is with great sadness and grief to inform the 27th Lancer family and friends, as well as the drum corps world, of a great loss. Mrs. Patsy Bonfiglio, the mother and one of the founders of the 27th Lancers, slipped away into Jesus' arms At 1:45 am this morning at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. She went while sleeping. The details of the wake will be posted as soon as arrangements have been made. My condolences to the Bonfiglio family and the 27th Lancer family Dusty Gerlach 21st Lancers Norwood MA 70-77 Boston Crusaders 78-79
  10. Hey Ray, thing is do you remember the way l think it was like auto pilot. We did win those shows. I remember what 18 meant and then not so much Hope you and the family are well and talk to you soon Dusty
  11. great pictures. l was on the very end on the right side that is out of the frame, Bari. that was the conclusion of the show after Conquest.. How do l post pics here? l have a couple Dusty BAC 78-79
  12. If l am not mistaken, wasnt the first corp to use marching mallets xylophone the 1969 Boston Crusaders. I beileve they took a 2 point penalty for it in the VFW Nat Prelims.
  13. sorry mistaken, it was the beginning of the season 1978 my first year in the Crusaders. The first shows up until july when the scores started changing
  14. Yeah Tony was an unreal designer. In the bottom picture l am the last Bari on the left side. Tony's drill that year was basically a follow the leader type of one with myself on one side and another bari Tuna, on the other. Those are great pics l havent seen them before thanks for the post.. wish someone had some video of that year.
  15. well l rather have the visual of the gortons instead of the speedo. Steve great to hear from you. Let me know. l live down by plymouth now.. Teach Graphic Design in Somerville. Always stop at Lewis's after visiting the cemetary in Westwood where both my parents are now and my older Brother. I was there Sunday for a bucket or two and burger.. Hey stay in touch. Great to hear from you. Dusty
  16. I found this in a search about John Kennedy and the Boston Crusaders. It is from a post back in 2003 Author Brian Tolzmann Since November 22 is the 45th anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination, I thought it would be a good time to remember JFK's ties to drum corps. The Boston Crusaders marched in JFK innagural parade in Washington. Kennedy was an honorary member of the Boston Crusaders, and met with the corps just a few weeks prior to his assassination. The Crusaders served as Kennedy's official drum & bugle corps while he campaigned. The Crusaders lost their Hyde Park sponsorship at the end of the 1958 season, and, hence, also lost their equipment and uniforms. Then U.S. Senator John Kennedy arranged for the Crusaders to buy (at a HUGE discount!) uniforms from West Point. The Crusaders wore those uniforms until they were later able to purchase their old uniforms back again. When Boston marched in the inaugural parade of President Lyndon Johnson in January of 1965, all the corps were told not to drum in front of the President's viewing stand, because the sound could cover up a potential assassin's gun fire. That was a sad statement of how the world changed the weekend of November 22, 1963, in Dallas. Here is a photo of JFK with the Boston Crusaders. You have to scroll to the bottom of the page to see it: http://mastersmarchingarts.com/photo_page_1.shtml
  17. Was funny how that happened, but then again we didnt conform to DCI we didnt care we did the shows for the People in the stands that understood quality drum corps and ourselves and former Crusaders,. All year long we beat the corps that placed ahead of us until DCI prelims. funny how that happens... A month before we beat the troopers and royal crusaders by 9 points and look where they finished.. but we knew from the people in the stands how we did.. we beat Garfield all year long us and the offensive lions traded each week . In June we beat both 27th and bridgemen. All with 25 horns.. At CYO we beat Madison in Marching execution and l believe Horn execution CYO was a great show for us.. we lined up 5 yrs off the 50.. The DM notice and said ok all turn to the stands and after 4 move 5 yrs to the 50 then turn and wave and say HI Mom.. got a standing O for that .. We competed to enjoy and have fun.... 1 Blue Devils 91.750 2 Phantom Regiment 91.650 3 Santa Clara Vanguard 89.950 4 Spirit of Atlanta 89.850 5 27th Lancers 87.400 6 Madison Scouts 86.850 7 Bridgemen 85.000 8 Blue Stars 84.850 9 North Star 84.450 10 Guardsmen 83.650 11 Cavaliers 82.000 12 Troopers 81.900 13 Crossmen 81.700 14 Freelancers 79.400 15 Offensive Lions 76.850 16 Garfield Cadets 76.750 17 Royal Crusaders 76.350 18 Royal Brigade 76.100 19 Boston Crusaders 74.750
  18. Steve Groh, there is a name from the past. Dusty here, Norwood Continental, 21st lancers sop and Bari, circa 68-77 then joined the Crusaders. how the hell are you. I remember lots of stories you used to tell,, was cool. Werent you the one that dressed as a Gortons fisherman and special ordered a filet of fish at macdonalds to take more time? hope all is well.. Norwood has changed a lot but Lewis's, the colonial and the venice are still there.. take care Dusty Gerlach 69-70 Norwood continentals 70-77 21st Lancers 78 - 79Boston Crusaders
  19. if you are using years of corps how bout 1969 0r 1970 Boston Crusaders and the 75 Skyliners.. or just Boston and Sky talk bout a east coast beast Dusty, 78-79 Boston 25 horns and still alive...
  20. No we lost a lead soprano player to a car accident in the spring, Tony Smith, wrote the drill for 25 horns and a black space for that sop player. We always left it on the field ever performance. I remember why all winter horn rehearsals and spring ones we woud work on breathing exercises and cardio ones now l know why that is why we lasted the entire show as powerful as we did. We did it for the fans, for the former Crusaders and for us.. . Was an unreal feeling coming into Whitewaters DCI Midwest Retreat inbetween phantom and l think Madison and both of them putting their instruments down and applauding us. I met two SC members at that show and they were wearing Boston T Shirts under their Uniforms...
  21. 79 was my age out year. The Crusaders that year fielded a 25 man hornline, debatably the most powerful cleanest 25 guys ever. I have the mp3 file of the DCI Prelim show. I am looking to see if anyone has video or other pictures. This corp motto was quality not quantity and we lived to it. We made every DCI finals show except the big one where one of our caption scores was down 2 pts lower then all year long, I believe it was drum exposure. all year it was 4 to 4.5 and in the finals was 2 or something like that.. made you wonder since we never changed a thing. I have so many fond memories of my years in Boston but that last year was truly memorable. If anyone saw us has any thoughts would like to hear and talk more Dusty, 79 Bari
  22. wow memories, My first was a soprano player in 1968 Norwood Cavaliers feeder corp to the Norwood Continentals, Norwood MA.. oh those old G/D bugles with slides. Then 21st Lancers from 1970-1977 and finally the Baritone in the Boston Crusaders, My last show was the Malden Classic when we can back from Birmingham in 1979. Last show in Uniform. left my bucks as we always did when we aged out. 1979 Boston, 25 man horn line finished 18 overall made every DCI finals except the big one Thanks for the memories Dusty
  23. 1979 Boston Crusaders 2 yrs with the Saders and 7 with 21st lancers and before that 2 with Norwood continentals
