  1. For sale now on eBay, starting bid only $10. Ebay Auction - 2008 DCI CD DCI 2008 World Championships CD. Excellent condition, only played a handful of times. 2. For the post-show encore by SCV/BD A Corps plus SCV/BD alumni, while lining just outside the stadium up I saw Steve walk on by and thought - holy **** that's Steve Young! WTF is he doing here? Then he stopped to shake some hands, and chatted with a few of us. He seemed genuinely interested talking with corps members and saying what a good job they had done. He wasn't in a rush to get out of there like this was a paid gig... very cool to see.
  3. Congrats on such a nice shot! It's great to be able to sit back and try some experimental shots once in a while, and it looks like this one really paid off. Although not as nice as yours, I took this last year at Pacific Procession on a very slow shutter speed. I was looking for a spot when the corps was still and the guard moved around them, giving a ghost like appearance. Not to take away from your shot, but I thought I would share given the "BD blurring" topic... B)
  4. A Vanguard win is always special to me, whether it's the first time in a row or the tenth time in a row. I tried not to take it for granted while marching because they need to be earned - no need to start now. Last night I was fortunate (along with quite a few other alumni) to find out about the win in a very special way. As we were lining up for the encore performance co-mingled with the SCV A-corps, we heard the scores announced and realized they won right along with them. I couldn't come up with a better way to hear that kind of news than to be standing there right with "the kids" as they realize it for themselves. What a great feeling They had a great show and deserved it. Now the time is to look forward and keep working hard, because I'm sure the "stick in the hornet's nest" will be drawing some quick attention! GO SCV!
  5. Hey Trish! Good to see you again last night. Good thing you told me this otherwise I would have stuck out... :P "SCV Alumni Only, Alumni Corps ~ 1997, 2002, 2007...BD/SCV Guard UNinvited to perform." :( Very sad, wish you were out there with us... not the same without the guard. We miss you. GO SCV!
  6. Wow Nikk, thanks for the compliment... I'm honored that you think so highly of it after all these years!!
  7. I think I might have a pic of this at home from prelims... I'll see if I can dig it up.
  8. I did, both were great guys. Pee Wee they were gone by the time you were around - Bryan aged out in '88 w/me and Cary (I think that's how he spelled it) aged out in '87. I was a rookie in the lead baritone line and Cary was intimidating as #### in a vet heavy line. I heard a rumor that he could have marched in '88 because his birthday was so close to DCI finals, but I don't know for sure. It would have been great to see him come back that year. Great comments, and I think what you said echoed some rehearsals I watched back at Mission College a few weeks ago. I am also surprised to see so many people down for the count, there were several missing when I watched the hornline rehearse. There must be something in the water in Santa Clara. It's probably just me, but this year's show reminds me a little of '88 when we had a hard time putting the show on the field. We sounded great standing still, but once we were on the field we had a tougher time of it. Took all year to figure out how to play and march at the same time "with feeling" as Gail would say. I've heard the corps a few times standing still this year and I think they sound wonderful. I hope they can pull it off on the field, and I have faith that they will figure it out...
  9. Hey, I'm not so sure about that... 24 lines dedicated to BD, and only 8 to SCV?? That's 3x the love!! :P Just kidding on all counts... Great review overall, thanks for posting. B)
  10. Oh crap, call your broker and sell ALL your stock, because the WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!! :sshh: Look, I'm against DCI turning into a marching band as much as the next guy, but there is a lot of great reasons to have local bands perform at shows. It's happened for years, I know because that's how I started. :) In the early 80's I was part of a youth marching band that performed in exhibition at all the local shows. This was when there were a TON of local corps (SCV, BD, Raiders, Valley Fever, VK, Kingsmen, Freelancers, etc) and having performed at those shows opened my eyes up wide to a whole new world of drums corps I never would have experienced otherwise. This little youth band was single handedly responsible for producing a ton of talented musicians to both BD and SCV from 83 to the early 90's. My guess is that at least 25% of the SCV hornline in the 88-92 era came from this little band that DCI allowed to play at the local shows - inlcuding the 89 champion line. I'd also dare to say that maybe half the SCV soloists in that era (including myself) had roots there, ALL of the BD/SCV DM's in 88 plus a few into the 90's, and even a little snare drummer came from this group to become rather famous these days... little Jimmy Cassella. Yeah, even he had roots in a small little marching band that was allowed to perform at local drum corps shows. :P Without this little band: I never would have seen Phantom perform Sparticus handing out the librettos; I never would have seen how fun VK was at retreats with their folding chairs; I never would have seen the BD/SCV drum major contest on who could walk the slowest to get out for retreat; I never would have seen the greatest drum corps to walk on the face of the earth, the '86 Blue Devils; And I would have never found my calling to join SCV. Having bands perform at local shows does not weaken the activity. On the contrary, it gives kids exposure to drum corps that they might already have. Unfortunately this little marching band has long gone under, but I can only imagine how much more local talent would be available if it were still around. It's too bad this doesn't happen more often. B) Peace out...
  11. You can't just demand respect... you have to earn it. And that is MY opinion.
  12. Great thread, and it went exactly as I thought it would. In one corner we have the sopranos, and in the other corner we have the notasopranos! In keeping up with Duguda fighter pilot style - "Iceman" the baritone player (or contra, mello, etc) keeps his cool, plays technically well, and cuts off exactly when he is supposed to. Then there's "Maverick" the lead sop, doing unauthorized flybyes, buzzing the tower, and creating all kinds of havoc. But, the kid is #### good so they let him hang around anyway. Who wins in the end? I guess we all do - this is the yin/yang of drum corps. We need each other as wing men so we put up with whatever grievences because in most cases the end result of the ensemble is pretty cool. B) With that being said, stop screeching and hanging over you sop ba$tards! It sounds like crap!! :sshh: Love, Iceman
