  1. practice, practice, practice...some day you'll catch up! You're beginning to get the hang of it though....
  2. You can find his name in the Times-Dispatch as well!
  3. Here's the Hurcs HOF write up.... Nicholson, Joseph Joe Nicholson holds the distinction of being one of thirteen original members that initially formed St. Raphael’s Golden Buccaneers in 1957.He stayed with the highly successful corps until he aged out of the junior activity. He was a member of the Buc’s touted horn quartet that at one point went undefeated for three years in addition to amassing many titles as well as National recognition on the individual scene of the ‘60’s. During this time, Joe also taught St. Raphael’s feeder corps, the Musketeers. Joe came to the Hurricanes in 1970 were he anchored the lead baritone section for fifteen years, through ’84. In the wake of a down turn, Joe came back in 1990 through 1995 and again in 2000. Following that season he continued on as a drill tech in 2001 &2002. He was named “Hurricane of the Year” for 1977 and throughout his long career, proved to be an inspiration to those around him by exemplifying a work ethic and dedication to the Corps that sets him apart. In his many years with the Corps, there have been several highlights, but perhaps his proudest achievement is simply that of being a Hurricane! Subsequent to his competitive career, Joe has played with and serves on the board of the Park City Pride Alumni Corps and has also served on the board of the Hurricane Alumni Association.
  4. You made me blush Ray....But only you could portray a guy like Joey in such a way. He was an anchor of the bari line in St Rapheals and the Hurcs for Joe, You, Screech, Dion, etc. for many years...I would have simply described him as a great soldier! :thumbup:/>/>/>
  5. You are right on that Andy....his "loooonnnggg" Hurricane career played out over four decades, beginning in 1970!......not just as a lead bari but as an instructor and board member of the Alumni Association as well...and he is indeed in the Hurc HOF :worthy:/>
  6. Well, I didn't go to high school with him but he's not just some regular joe either...
  7. Change one vowel and he could play the shrink on the Sopranos!
  8. I don't have to guess....I went to high school with him!:tongue:/>
  9. That's not exactly what I was thinkin'.....but that works too! :thumbup:/>
  10. I was there....I remember the mouse!.......................unbelievable...so was his lip!
  11. Myself and another historian (Sky) have stumbled upon some score inconsistencies for the 1960 Mission Drums contest...here's what we have from three sources; Hurcs record; Sky record; corpsreps record; 1. Princemen..........(.3).....84.55, 1. Princemen.......(.3)...84.55, 1. Princemen..........84.55 2. Caballeros...... (.2).....84.28, 2. Caballeros...... (.2)...84.28, 2. Caballeros..........84.28 3. Skyliners ....... (1.2)....81.48, .3. Skyliners ......(1.2)...81.48, 3. Skyliners.............81.48 4. Archer Epler......(.2)....81.47, ..4. Archer Epler......(.2)...81.47, 4. Archer Epler....... 81.47 5. Reilly Raiders(2.3)....80.79, 5. Reilly Raiders(2.2)....80.47, 5. Reilly Raiders... 80.77 6. Conn. Yankees (.2)...77.36, 6. Hurricanes (.8).....76.73, 6. Hurricanes.........76.23 7. Hurricanes........(.8)...76.23, 7. Appleknockers (.8)...75.68, 7. Appleknockers...75.68 8. Appleknockers (.3)...75.68, 8. Conn. Yankees (.2).. 72.68, 8. Conn. Yankees..72.68 For the sake of historical accuracy I'm hoping someone out there in Planet land can add a little clarity. A few 1/1000's in a score may be inconsequential but the placement for the Yankees is bothersome.....Can anyone shed some light?
  12. For the sake of accuracy, it was P.G.T. Beauregard that was the Superintendant at West Point when the war broke out. R.E. Lee's tenure as Supt. was 1852-1855. It's also believed that Lee may have suffered a heart attack at Gettysburg, a factor that may have influenced his illadvised tactics. All very interesting stuff! I've been to Gettysburg a few times and found the experience to be both somber and facinating.
  13. It was Vinny Ratford that was so instrumental in getting the Hurricanes off and running...err, marching as a competitive unit in the mid fifties. He instilled an appreciation for the importance of a strong marching caption that would propel the success of the Corps for many years. Ed Condon & Bobby Woods schooled on the "old sage" and when they succeeded him, maintained the Hurricanes marching prowess as the strong suit through the golden years of the sixties....and, edified by his example, spoke of Ratford often. It was the likes of Ratford, as well as Earl Sturtze on percussion, that established the foundations for high standards that would become the mantra. It was also at the urging of Ratford that the Hurcs brought in a young upstart from Brooklyn to take over the fledgling hornline in 1957....non other than one Joe Genero!...and the rest as they say, is history. Vinny Ratford's legacy spanned many corps over many years, but his influence, and guidance on the the Hurcs of the fifties had a lasting impact that resonates to this day.
  14. Nice review!.....Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts...:thumbup:/>
  15. And if you looked near the "Grass or "Dirt" you might find a "Spider!"
  16. Let's see....at one time or another Wyatt Earp was a teamster, buffalo hunter, bouncer, saloon keeper, gambler, brothel owner, pimp, miner and boxing ref......that hardly narrows it down... rats, could be any number of Skyliners!
  17. It's so grainy it seems to almost pre-dates photography!
  18. You got it right as far as I know Andy.....though I don't think he did the Fiddler solo...that was Laskowski. He was going to UB while in the Corps and went into law. I havn't seen him since 1969...that's why I was so slow to recognize him! He was a good guy and a very good horn in a strong lead section during those years...:thumbup:/>
  19. Forty Horns in 69'......that was pretty much average for us...sometimes a few more eg. 72' @ 54 and 73' @ 48 but 40-42 was aveerage.
  20. Sixteen sops in 69'. Are we sure this pic is a 69' Hurc?......My only guess is the one from St. Ann's
