  1. After 1100pm and no complete scores from Syracuse yet? Show started at 700pm!
  2. Those of us who had the opportunity to sample a ladle full of Uncle Nicky's [in]famous "wail juice" before going on will forever have a place in our hearts for this great human being. What a shocking experience for an 18 year old in his first ever senior drum corps show! I remember asking him after the show, "Nicky - what the hell was that stuff!" to which he replied "heheh ... you don't need to know, son." Conversing with him was like listening to Thomad Jefferson talking about the creation of these United States ... except the subject was always drum corps. Not to forget that Nick lives on in the Sunrisers with the alumni's contribution of a new sop and mello horn engraved in memory of Uncle Nicky. PS ... I never did find out what exactly it was in Nicks concoction. It sure wasn't just lemonade like I first thought when offered a ladle!
  3. That one is just TOO easy, Nanci but just in the nic of time.
  4. We tried a few years ago. Didn't work out. Many alums are with different corps, or those retired are spread to the winds.
  5. Ummm... more information that we needed to know, I think.
  6. Uh .... NOT a "cowboy hat" ... it's an "Aussie" hat. The 60's Cadet uni, in my opinion, was far sharper looking. If not for the ridiculous cost of those jackets I dare say the corps would have retained them. And this is another totally lame topic.
  7. No you're not - you can't be:) Did I lose a few years again? Gak!
  8. Shared by more than a few, I'm sure. As my username implies - I was a Sunriser during the time cabalumnidrummer mentions, but I too was an admirer of Winky. I never met the man personally, but he was IMO one of a kind - the ultimate showman and clearly a guy who loved what he did and the corps he did it with. I had a good friend who was with Sky back then and he often shared Winky stories with me. One of the greats for sure. I didn't even know he was ill and was saddened to hear we (not just Sky, but ALL of us) had lost him. Reference to the Cab's - one of the few DM's I really enjoyed, and who could come close to Winky for showmanship and conducting skills was their Chuck Bishop. Both Sky and the Cabs have long been 2 of my favorite corps going back to the late 50's when I played sop in our local FD corps - ,long before I joined Sun.
  9. Glenn - I don't think you're old enough to remember Orlando's biggest hits from the late 50's-early 60's, such as Candida and Bless You (his first big hit).
  10. I've mentioned a few of these within the Sunrisers before, and most think I'm crazy, but... Jimmy Dorsey - So Rare Ray Anthony - Dragnet (Room 43) Pink Floyd - Shine On (you crazy diamond) The Knack - My Sharonna [can you imagine the low brass/bass drum lines?] Lots more....
  11. Uhhh ... w t h happened to the previous Waterloo review threads? I'm still waiting to read an actual review here. And I'd LOVE for somebody with actual knowledge of why Sun was given a 3.2 point penalty!
  12. Nah - I was just funnin'. I can't make it for health reasons. Just being snarky - I would never waste my dime in a Starbucks:)
  13. That would be incorrect. They were less than 1 minute short on their program, which was played standstill at the end line - if that's what they call it these days. In the 60's it was just that. Pretty far from "significantly", I'd say. And nothing is "being added" for the next show - it is already part of the show, but they were unable to complete the drill part in time. They WILL be for Syracuse in two weeks.
  14. Like some other corps - the Sunrisers have had something of a tough time of late since winning Class A title in 2007. It has moved its base of operation from upstate NY back to its roots on Long Island, and did not field a corps in 2008, and has had to start virtually from scratch this year with an entirely new group of players and new staff. In addition, NONE of these youngsters have ever performed in a drum corps before - let alone in DCA. All things considered, the alumni is proud of their performance. This was the first step. You have to walk before you can run, and they did well, considering the work they've done in just a few short weeks going from a brief exhibition to performing their full show - minus less than a minute of the finale - which I expect caused the penalty. Add another 3.2 points to their score and that is very respectable for a first EVER performance in competition. Now on to the next step .. recruiting more members, cleaning up the show, and regaining the Sunrisers legacy of excellence.
  15. Okay - a few reminiscences of Don from the "Our Sun Stories" page of the Sunrisers Alumni website operated by yours truly. The first is from the page of premier solo sop Bob Murphy, the second is from the page of Glenn Krug. The 1969 Dream Contest I remember one other incident (referring to Glenn Krugs story) with big Don. It was at the NE Circus (Circuit) finals at Agawam, Mass. First a little background. Our drill was written for 44 horns and we had 48 - so John Olivieri, Frank Dorritie, Frank Diliberto and I were designated as "floaters" - which meant that we were tacked on to different parts of the drill or filled regular spots when someone was absent. NE Circus had prelims in the afternoon and Finals the same night. Angelica was judging execution. In the prelims he worked the right side of the horn line and for the finals he worked the left side. For the prelims, FD, FTD, and I filled spots on the right side of the corps. For finals we went back to our regular "floater" spots on the left side of corps center. We played "Defile" off the line and at the climax of the piece there is a 5 beat long, eighth note, soprano run that we played triple tonguing over. Got that? Well, during the prelims, Angelica is standing on the right side, right in front of the sopranos when we let fly with our barrage of triplets ... absolutely nailed them .... and Angelica's head snapped up so fast that I'm surprised he didn't rupture his spinal cord. When we finished the piece and went to Parade Rest I got a chance to look at his face. Big grin! Bob Murphy Don Angelica was the horn judge at the 1968 Dream and when we came out of concert, this gent stood at the front of the field near Frank Dorritie, Johnny Olivieri, Fedyck and Bob Murphy as they triple tongued "The Joker". He stood with his clip board and watched as they shined on this one. When they finished, he put the clip board down by his side and just shook his head in amazement. Not a tick in sight. True story. (Murphs confirmation) "The judge is/was Don Angelica and we gave him quite a bit to listen to that day. He had two other great reactions that I remember. They came during "American In Paris". The first happened right after the melo solo. We played five very hairy chords, very slowly and very softly and very IN TUNE. Angelilca's response was to clutch his clipboard to his chest, look up to the heavens, bend his knees, and bounce up and down two or three times with a look of unrestrained glee on his face (It takes longer to write it down then it took to execute the move). The second came a moment later at the conclusion of Cookie Kamerdan's solo when Angelica again clasped his clipboard to his chest. looked to the heavens, and spun around in place. I think that the man had an orgasm right there in the middle of Roosevelt Stadium!" Glenn Krug Bruce Webmaster Sunrisers Alumni Website
  16. Then can we assume you are.. 1- not married 2- don't have a family to support 3- don't own a home 4- have no mortgage to worry about paying (no - Obama is NOT going to pay it for you) 5- have no real debt? Then you are not qualified to judge. I could "get over it" too if not for all the above - like most of us over the age of 35-40.
  17. You're referring to me? I'm hysterical? LOL Tell you what .., why don't you ask these people graduating college this year - including many DCI people - if they have any job prospects lined up? To suggest the economy isn't in the toilet is simply ridiculous. There is nothing "hysterical" about that.
  18. And despite the hysterics by a few - I consider it a reasonable question. The economy sucks, people are losing their jobs left and right, and if you factor in the drop in the value of the dollar ... EVERYTHING is more expensive.
  19. Very likely. The basic fees to march, individual travel (price of gas), food is more expensive, lodging is more expensive, bus transport is more expensive, costs for equipment trucks is crazy (fuel, insurance, etc) and then just wanting to stay close to home "just in case." Doesn't bode well the next few years.
  20. I long for the days when corps didn't have to have a "theme." How about "We're going to play some music for you we think you folks will enjoy!" and leave it at that.
