  1. So.... Returning to the topic of the post. Does this acquisition mean a Jazz show for the Men of Madison, or are we expecting a master of cool to step from his boundaries to experiment with a corps of returning members who are no stranger of being asked trying new things? (The original show this year tried a lot of new things, they just didn't pan out as expected, the mid-season switcheroo we trying to recover with something manageable and time-tested)
  2. My respects to the MS Alumni corps, a huge mistake forgetting them. You're right, it's been done too recently, but a jazz show would be nice. Edit: I posted in haste and made gross grammar errors
  3. BD program coordinator '92-'04. I guess it's a jazz show this year. Don't want to take the program coordinator out of his element. I'm not even joking. A classic Madison Jazz/Latin show would be awesome. It has been a whole 12 years since we've heard malaguena outright and proper.
  4. Scouts need a look that's more.... scouts. More classic, less spacey Oh, and white pants
  5. The 3rd part, yes. They were all french horn players, and having the french horn mouthpiece helped them project a big low range. The 1st and 2nds all had 6Vs
  6. That means so little in this activity. Scouts beat Boston last year and their audition was paltry in comparison to say, glassmen. People audition based on more than a ranking, I wouldn't audition for a corps that plays shows that don't entertain me even if those shows are victorious. Personally, i want to enjoy my summer, not spend it praying that come august i will have a ring to make me feel better about living through hell.
  7. Actually, the hand stays on the horn until the contras hit the fifty, then it was two slow counts to move the hand to the hip as covertly as possible and two counts to turn front. The effect of hiding the hand move was apparently effective ;-) It's incredible how simple that move was to teach and march, but how amazing the effect was. People standing and the corps hadn't played a note over forte.
  8. We did have some tones age out, so don't discount your chances so easily. Besides, the $75 is not paying for the chance to audition, it's for the the housing, food, and instruction you receive. Even if you were to not receive a spot, it is worth the time and effort. I've been cut from various places but i never felt like i wasted my time or money. On topic of the thread, i'll be retuning to Madison for another year on mello. Looking forward to another mean book by John Georgeson!
  9. Can't happen. Fred J. Miller dropped the scouts after they let go of cesario (i guess they took it personally) and since all of the unis from 2003 to 2006 are part of the "Cesario Collection" they are considered protected designs and cannot be reproduced by the Scouts current uni provider, Stanbury. Personally though, I'm hoping for white pants next year, with a primarily vet corps returning, the basics should be sound enough to allow for the classic white pants to return.
  10. I know i'm looking forward to at least a couple days of going straight from bus to practice field. At least, that happened last year.
  11. Agreed, keep those request pumping in and they cant ignore all of us.
  12. Come to think of it, you might be right. I don't know how the rights to the shows work. Considering I know that the scouts have a collection of their own with their shows from '72 to 2001, and those would obviously show on the legacy collection as well. It is curious to think how two hands in the historical cookie jar is actually working out, legally speaking...
  13. I doubt that, it would be more about netflix wanting to invest $600 and wondering if they will get thier investment back in increased business, which i think they might. I don't think DCI would have a problem, th worst that could happen would people renting their videos and not buying them. If that's the case, they may get lucky and find someone who will justlike them all so much that they buy one for themselves.
  14. I'm just wondering if there are any other customers to this wonderful mail-order DVD renting service. Not only is it cheaper than going to blockbuster 10 times a month, the selection is also astounding in comparison. I am just wondering if I am not the only one who would like them to invest in 5 or 6 copies of the legacy collection. I know I would have at least one checked out at any given time and i would love the opportunity to see older shows without forking out $40 a DVD. For those of you saying that the new fans don't get enough exposure to the 70's this could be the means. For those of you that don't have netflix, you should check it out, i believe they have free trials. This was not an advert, I'm just hoping there may be enough people who want to see this that netflix would actually invest in the Legacy Collection DVDs.
  15. I agree, the pre-opener Uninvited segment it pretty sweet, it will have drill to it as well, as sort of leading up into the explosive beginning of Kashmir. The bells playing the four-note repeating lick after the brass hit segment is a loop that will repeat until the announcer says "you may take the field in competition" then comes the accellerando into Kashmir. I'm surprised they didn't put the Ice Castles recording up too, but I guess you can find that on youtube for free.
  16. This conversation is sounding much to much like my Econ class, soon people will be discussing the need for an excise tax to limit to profit received on pre-season recordings. Either way, get the recordings, enjoy them, and post your thoughts. You money will not be wasted
  17. It's not a bad deal, and it will definitely be put to good use. Whether you're a scouts fan or not, I don't think anyone likes to see a corps in financial trouble (not that they are, but I think I make my point). I don't sweat buying from any corps, as long as the product is worthwhile.
  18. When you download, get them one at a time, I had issues with the files being truncated because i was trying to get them all at once. Doing them one-at-a-time fixed that.
  19. He's right, it's when you are buying an adapter that you really have to be careful about fit.
  20. Best of luck, you youngins are the future of drum corps.
  21. If you appreciate range, I'd shoot for a mello mouthpiece (probably a 6V). They provide the tone of a french horn with the range of a trumpet. However, some of the best third mellophone players i've heard play on french horn mouthpieces and adapters, it gives a nice dark resonant horn sound for the rest of the mello line to build from. If you've shaken the trumpet tendency to play higher and louder, then nothing will help your band's mello section like providing a solid third-part foundation on a mouthpiece that you are already comfortable with.
  22. Expect good things from John Georgeson, he's got a lot of talented people making sure his stuff is played right, and he's got quite the resume (Madison 88 anyone?)
  23. Obviously, if the judges thought the show was the best, it would be first. In this case, best means it's a crowd favorite, I've always thought that was the goal for Madison, to put on the most enjoyable show possible, regardless of score. It was to prove a point that the show was enjoyable despite not being the highest ranking. I don't care if we make 1st or 14th, I want to see a standing ovation that starts early and pushes into the next corps' show (a la JC Superstar 1999, a 6th place show, I should point out).
