  1. This happened at a wedding this last weekend. A bunch of old SCV drummers put together a battery to play for a snare drummer's wedding. 7 snares, two tenors, and a bass drummer. It was a great way to bring drum corps to the wedding. The groom grabbed some sticks and played with the line. Good times.
  2. When I taught the SCVC in 2000 the kids won Division II and advanced to Division I finals where they placed 17th. Technically they were in competition with SCV that year. There are no rules preventing this.
  3. All I can really say is that I have had this show in my head straight since I saw it live. I have been working on my car to Appalachian Spring, riding my bike to Appalachian Spring, eating my breakfast to Appalachian Spring, reading my mail to Appalachian Spring, and tonight I will be enjoying a 4th of July BBQ to Appalachian Spring. I can't wait to see this at finals. I envy those kids so much. It has to be so much fun to perform.
  4. Sorry, this was a reference to the famous 1980's band "When In Rome." A one hit wonder whose lyrics I posted on this thread. The song is called "The Promise" Youtube it. I promise you, I've now taken my medication.
  5. This show gave me goose bumps this weekend. After the company front my wife nudged me and pointed to her arm that had hair standing on end. This is classic SCV. The kids are great this year. I met many of them and they are just good all around individuals. Oh, how I miss it. How I miss it.
  6. I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say. I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be. But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me, I promise you. I promise you! Somebody had to!
  7. Ah, the Cymbal "V" is usually incorporated toward the end of tour. In my day it was generally a finals week phenomenon. Never fear, it will be there. The show is magnificent. It has been years since SCV actually made me emotional. They perform it so well. It appears to have some room for growth and is truly one I will have on my ipod for years to come. If I could take the whole summer and follow the corps doing book signings like I did this weekend I would do it. Seeing SCV play like this just makes the hair stand up on my neck.
  8. Can we just keep in mind that the people we talk about in this forum are real people? They are people with real feelings, emotions, and careers. It's not always possible for them to escape the reach of the words we type on these forums. This thread hasn't gotten too personal yet but I've seen good people absolutely ravaged on these forums because there is something people may not like about their artistic creations. For the sake of respect and the dignity of various big name staff members can we keep this positive and strength based? I would hate to see this thread go from rumors to personal attacks on people. Just thought I would put in my .02.
  9. HAHAHA, Way to quash that one Coolmuze. In 1997 they said we (SCV) wouldn't make finals. hmm... I agree. Give em' time. This is a very solid foundation for a new direction for the corps as an organization. I'm not so sure it's all about making top 3 this year. All my best to those members! Keep fighting. BTW, if you are a member and you are reading this forum right now. STOP! Just focus on your game. We're irrelevant to you right now! Only view this thread after you come home from tour and laugh at it all.
  10. It was odd to remember the 10 year anniversary of Art's passing this year. It seems like such a short time ago. I will never forget his body laying in that casket with his uniform on and his bass drum mallets in his hands. It's just one of those things I will never get out of my head. I tell you, it was hard to move on and teach that summer while I was grieving. There had to have been such a great sense of grief in the corps just after Gail passed. I can't imagine what that must have been like.
  11. I talked about that in my book. It was pretty unexpected when it was discovered. A member heard some drumming in the wall and thought it was coming from the bingo hall. THinking he was the only member there, he went into the bingo hall to see if anybody was there. Nobody. He went back to the percussion room and heard the drumming again. He investigated further to hear the noise coming from the attic. He opened the door to the attic and heard nothing. He closed the door and went back into the percussion room. He thought for a moment, then looked up at the plaque on the wall for Art Velarde listing his date of death as 5-26-99. He immediately realized it was currently 5-26-00, and made a hasty retreat from the corps hall. It has been heard a few times since as well.
  12. I just missed him by a few years. It is said that he makes his presence known in quite tangible ways around the Corps Hall. An employee that knew him well told me he plays silly jokes on her by hiding things and making noises when there is nobody else in the Hall. I wouldn't pass something like this on if I couldn't vouch for the character of the person to which this sort of thing often happens.
  13. It's just so unfortunate that this sort of thing still occurs and that a few Jr. football coaches tend to encourage it. I've worked at schools that have great relations between football and band. I've also worked at schools where the football coaches were openly hostile to the music program, but insisted they play the fight song every-time a touchdown was scored. Makes you wonder how much of this behavior is simple ignorance and how much may be a symptom of roid-rage. It's more and more prevalent in sports at all levels these days. Everybody who has spent time in drum corps has the "aggressive football team" story to tell.
  14. Hahahaha! Well done. You even backed it up with a reference from The Onion. I was going to make this same point but you beat me to it and made it with such grace and poignancy
  15. Your letter is wonderfully eloquent. This is exactly the way we, as a community, should respond to this kind of mindless drivel. It appears this guy has a bit of a shtick going on in his writing style that requires him to bully others. Without attempting to be facetious this article would be one I would expect out of a high school news paper. That said, the dignity of the above response, and others like it are far more effective for these types of individuals than are ad homonym attacks. He must feel shamed rather than justified in his abject ignorance.
  16. Bravo Christina! Every word, gold! It's universal among corps. Took me halfway through my drum corps career to actually realize most of this. Well done.
  17. Well, you were partly right. Our drum major wore a black version of this uniform with a black aussie.
  18. Oh, that's exactly what I was thinking when I saw that. I felt so humiliated for her and I didn't even know her. Poor thing.
  19. Does it matter if he's 32, has a full time job, and hasn't played tenors in about 10 years? Yeah, that probably does matter, huh? But seriously, my heart goes out to the poor kid who lost his spot for the injury. That's a tough break. I truly hope his health returns soon.
  20. Mostly a male corps. They wear white aussie's and play Maliguenia a lot. But seriously. Contact GM Kuzma. He wrote the book "On the Field from Denver Colorado... The Blue Knights." He is a super nice guy who marched Scouts in 1996. He loves discussing old traditions like this. He has a facebook page. I'm sure he can help.
