  1. Spending the night on the Cadets .. Been making notes on charts for meeting tomorow with Eric. So much wonderful material ... so much .... and it is going to be a wonderful show. For me, at this juncture, it.s about the angle, or the story, or the reason for being. How to make people feel ... sorrow, joy, and evertthing in between .... this is the quest!!! To be in amazement ... to be filled with thoughts ... to wonder .... and to be sure that you just needed to see this again. Not because you were not sure ... but because of the beauty ... the quality and the feelings. It's about feeling. The members are going to simply have the show of their lives ... Just listening to the music I am filled with excitement at times and tears at others. Funny ... all will worry if we are going to have words. Well ... I love words as a tool and yes, if the inclusion of voice adds to the overall product ... it has to be in there. What else can we do? But ... does it have to be there? Does it help? and at what level ... Sitting here listening over and over again to An American Elegy ... What story can WE TELL ... or depict and how will we do it? What if the entire show was to begin with this? or ... what if ... what if ... we ended with this. Wow. What would it take to create a ballad with the emotional jolt that you could end an entire 11 minute show ... with the ballad. Buit .. would it not make sense in the right show? I believe it would. yes .. it would. Back to the earphones. Time to take a walk in the late night cold. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thoughts?
  2. I guess you're right, Galen. I would like to hear some Japanese inspired music though.
  3. What do Korean folk songs have to do with Samurai? Oh well, it's Asia...all the same to me.
  4. I wasn't affected, John. Keep up the good work!
  5. The Hopkins concept is starting to look pretty doable right now.
  6. I haven't heard The Man in the Bath. Is it a good piece?
  7. i hate poorly worded, ignorant posts. of course, this does not apply to you
  8. there's a reason the cadets placed 2nd. an outstanding show all around.
  9. There is a great interview with him in the August 2007 issue of The Instrumentalist. Interesting quote. He said he found arranging for marching band to be more "artistically satisfying" than writing for drum corps. He said the different colors that are available with marching bands are the primary reason for this. Hmmm...could this be why instructors/designers are so willing to vote for the allowance of electronics, woodwinds, etc.? An interesting thought for those of you who define excellence in creativity/innovation as working within certain restrictions (brass and percussion only).
  10. I want to give a shout out to Wayne Downey. What a great guy and great educator. He has so much class and has a high rapport with the students. He serves as a model educator and a model professional. Cheers!
  11. Blue Devils could teach about jazz. I thought their 2003 show truly captured the essence of cool jazz. Or rather, how it should have really been...loud and in your face. They could also teach about the downfalls of drug addiction...but we won't get into that...
