  2. Actually he said STHU. You saw his H and raised it an F. OK, I see you downgraded it to an H. Never mind.
  3. To me that suggests that holding the scores down was the key, not the random draw. To me it seems like a lot of these problems come from the range being too small (or lacking granularity) and not having enough room for difference at the top. If a typical finals spread was more like 70 to 95 instead of 85 to 99, there would be more room to get things right.
  4. If performing early is a disadvantage because the judges are afraid to score a corps as high as it deserves for fear of not leaving enough room, then I don't see how a random mix makes things any more fair because, being random, it might or might not benefit a given corps. If there are two corps who are very evenly matched, then a random draw might have one perform early and one perform late, giving one an unfair advantage over the other. That seems to add much more unfairness. At least the current bias has the justification of arguably rewarding corps that have performed better over the season up to this point. If not having enough room for scores is the problem, maybe the range they use should be adjusted downward, leaving plenty of room at the top and on the way to the top so every year is not a race to the mythically perfect 100 score?
  5. Well i think i understand what you are saying, but I am left to wonder then what was the advantage in mixing them up to begin with. I thought people were saying they should be mixed up so as to avoid assumptions about where they belong. But is sounds like you are saying it is OK to mix them up because they know what to assume anyway. Personally, I don't see how a random mix helps avoid slotting, especially with plenty of preconceived notions about where corps belong. Not having the closest corps perform closest together would seem to decrease the chances of confidently determining that one corps is better than another despite an expectation otherwise.
  6. How are you yourself determining what they deserve here, though?
  7. It's great your kid is having a good experience at Boston, but surely your point can be made without attacking another organization? This year Crown seems to have a lot of familiar faces from last year. If they are really mean, shaming, distant, uncompassionate facists, one is left to wonder why so many of them would have come back.
  8. Just got back. Just impressions from a fan who is not even remotely close to being an expert on anything whatsoever... Academy has a fun show this year. Classy with a very light touch. Deep blue or indigo in their hats and cummerbunds has a very subtle effect against the black uniforms. I'm not sure if that is new this year but I had not noticed it before. Parasols got whisked away by a violent 3 mph wind. Might want to fix that. Someone could get hurt tripping over one of those things. Crossmen sounded kind of unbalanced but that seems like the sort of thing that can be worked out. I dropped in on practice earlier in the day and they sounded very good in sectionals, just still a little rough on the field. The caravans are cool but need some sort of decoration befitting the theme. The guard uniforms looked very nice but it is a subtle look that kind of gets overpowered by the white hats and plumes of the corps proper. Blue Knights I LOVE the new uniforms. The corps sounded very good to be so early in the season, something that has not always been the case in recent years although they have gone on to be much better later in the season. So don't know whether to expect them to go the other way now, or to be even better than the last few years. Santa Clara was WAY more enjoyable than i expected based on what I saw from last week on FN and based on the fact that I loved 2004 and was braced for disappointment. This show feels kind of like apples and oranges from that one to me now, though, so it doesn't really suffer from the comparison. Really nice visuals in this show, although I kind of forgot the big backdrop props were there after the show started. There is a mellophone (I think) solo into a big fuzzy microphone (I'm sure there is a term of art for it) that was really really sweet. All in all a good night. Temps dropped below 100 and felt more comfortable than previous years. Kudos on starting this thing late.
  9. Crossmen are at the school and broken out into sections in the shade.Disappointed not to see Bones anywhere. Is he too much of a primadonna to practice? Was expecting a skeleton in shorts or something. .
  10. 1996 Quarterfinals - Phantom 0.1 ahead of Madison 1996 Finals - Phantom 5.9 ahead of Madison 5.8 points in two (2) days If Phantom was slotted anywhere it was the express lane.
  11. Perhaps they remind you of the handsome young milkmen of your day?
  12. Agreed. Aplenty will have opportunities to be used aplenty. Declamatory just doesn't have the legs.
  13. Crossmen schedule says Chaparral HS in Scottsdale, AZ. Does not give rehearsal times though.
  14. SCV page says Mesquite HS in Gilbert AZ. Schedule says rehearsal 10:30 to 1:30, though I don't know whether that always means on the field or can be indoors? Not the most pleasant hours to be outdoors in this area.
  15. They have done designer commentaries on DVD's before. 2004 did it for the top several shows I think. Was really interesting to me as it exposed all kinds of things i had not noticed before.
  16. Yeah, the sash pops and the drums are muted. I think green sparkle drums would look good with the sash, and kind of fit with the show. I'm going to have to side with Flam and not Flam on this one.
  17. To me that sounds a lot like "Drum Corps: Something people used to do"
  18. I think it is a good idea except...the interviews from LAST NIGHT are the ones you would want?
  19. The point that it did not deserve to be dignified with a response?
  20. Maybe the narrator should wear ordinary clothes from each era.
  21. Group dynamics. People aren't sure so they wait to see what everybody else is doing. So if you want the audience to clap after the shows, take the lead. No drum corps fan is going to hold that against you, and most people will be glad to know it is OK to clap themselves.
