  1. Also the 2-time AL champion Skokie Indians. And the Pittsburgh Rockets. And the Norwood Park Imperials, Toledo Demons, St. Paul Scouts, Colts, Memphis Blues, Lakewood Ambassadors, Little Chute Dutch Girls, Milwaukee Royal Emperors, and the Blue Devils of Lima Ohio. On a budget, I mixed finishes in the Kenosha Kingsmen and nobody ever commented.
  2. Just who around here HASN'T marched as a Hurc DM ????
  3. This was being discussed in Drum Corps World magazine - in the late 50s - and undoubtedly decades before that. People listen with their eyes. You are a drummer. Does the color of a drum wrap make a diff? For a startup corps, get what's available, a mixture of finishes makes no diff.
  4. Don't get your hopes up. All the contest sponsor is required to provide is one 15amp 110V circuit. This won't run much of a power amp setup.
  5. Let's not be in such a russh to solve this one.
  6. With forearms that size, he's either a snaredrummer or a spinach-endorsing sailor man.
  7. PR existed from the mid-50s until a fire put them out of commission after the 1964 season. They returned by 1970. Their Phantomettes guard was an early powerhouse in the MWCGC. And in the early 60s they indeed played their signature march, on Holton bugles inherited from Chicago's Commonwealth Edison senior corps.
  8. Yeah, but did they ever tell you what to listen for? Or how to make corrections? Nowadays, these same geniuses just say "use your tuner" and think their job is done.
  9. Pretty good response Jason, except ......... The overtones are always audible. Every musical tone (except a pure sine wave) is an overtone series. The relative proportions of the various overtones determine the particular tone color of the instrument.
  10. While both Olds models and the King K-60 were great-playing bugles, the museum has seen fit to archive a Getzen. The Getzen FHs were all made with trombone bell tooling. So were their infamous "Frumpets", a marching horn in descant F.
  11. Sac played "The Vanished Army", by Kenneth J. Alford. "The Phantom Regiment" was played as an opener by ........................................................... the Phantom Regiment.
  12. Please tell all of us the Secret Shortcut. 'Cuz it was a good 450 miles from Cleveland to Newark last time I drove out that way.
  13. I have been in more than one libation-serving establishment when the Archie alums (and wannabees) have attempted to re-create this historic performance. [They would be better off just having a DJ spin the LP.]
  14. We're getting into WAG territory here, so I'll put an end to this rodential topic. Truman wrote for scads of corps, including the HAWTHoRnE cAbAllERoS. I even once saw him marching as a DM, although it may have been a cameo appearence. "White Rats" was a term used for the Cabs, by older members of the Boys of 76. But my thorough research [conducted mostly in the Cabs Alumni's bar at recent DCAs] has failed to find any greasy sombrero-wearers who knew they were once called the White Rats. Also, none of the '76 alumni know the origin of the name. I suspect it was coined in the 50s by the Skokie Indians. The Cabs, '76, and Skokie all have won multiple orange championship flags from the American Legion.
  15. The White Rats had a significant bunch of flags that didn't match their uniform colors. The corps who called them White Rats also had some similar flags. But they didn't know where the White Rats name originated. I suspect the nick came from still another corps that had a couple of these somewhat rare flags. And they were not an Upstate corps.
  16. Is it a "march" when you doff your shako, and do zero drill ???
  17. Fran, whaddaya want? I got plenty to loan ya. Both Olds models, cuppla Getzens and Ludwig Classics, a Holton 361, a Westshore 2-horizontal piston Getzen, a Peate with piston-actuated rotor. (If ya don't need no rotor, I got some older ones)
  18. Seems like they almost always put a Green corps on first.
  19. Every season when the the new HOF inductees are announced, we expect two types of reactions to be posted: A. How come it took so long to put this guy in? B. How come this guy was passed up? The answer is simple. Somebody has to nominate him !!! Here's how the three major HOFs work: BUGLERS HALL OF FAME Members submit one-page nominations before the end of the calendar year. These are screened by the Nomination Committee which currently is chaired by Jim Cossetti and includes Hunter Moss, Steve Buglino, Bobby Gaff, and me. This year there were 20 submissions and we narrowed them down to 12 on the ballot. Voting is by the current membership, and the top 8 will be inducted in April. Non-electees are not carried over to the following year, but may be re-submitted. WORLD DRUM CORPS HALL OF FAME Members submit 2-page nominations early in the year. A Nomination Committee screens these and chooses candidates in Brass, Percussion, and Marching. Voting is by the current membership, and induction is at the WDCHOF banquet on the DCA championship weekend. Candidates not elected are carried over to the next season. DCI HALL OF FAME Anyone may submit a nomination. A Committee takes only the first five that are sent in for each candidate, so a coordinated campaign is advisable. The number of inductees varies each year. Voting is by the current membership, and inductions are held during the DCI Championship week. Non-electees are not carried over. So friends, instead of asking Question A or B, make up a submission and present it through the proper channels.
  20. Not a pure anagram, other letters are also involved. The usage IS regional, I will remind our readers that there are some places in the world besides Upstate and Downstate.
  21. All of the letters in WHITE RATS, except one, are used in the actual name of the corps.
  22. Well, we still need to ID the White Rats. They certainly weren't Polish.
  23. You see mostly 4 foot flats because construction materials come in 4x8 sheets.
  24. Most of the White Rats (including some people who post here) don't even realize that they were once known, outside of their geographic area, as the White Rats.
