  1. you should be able to order any remo product from any dealer that sells remo products. they may not have it in stock but they should be able to order one for you
  2. fair enough, but if you ask me to tune a snare drum to a C#, i can make it so that it sounds like a C#
  3. sure you can....it's another step that many novice tuners don't take or know about. how is an individual snare gut different from a guitar string, or any other stringed instrument? the only difference is that the guts are stretched across the bottom of a drum, but they sure do act the same. they even used to be made out of the same material....cat gut! take a snare drum, turn it upside down so the guts are facing up, back the guts up so they are not touching the head and tighten them up as tight as they will go. now take a small flathead screwdriver and use it like a pick to pluck each gut....can you hear a pitch? use a screwdriver to adjust the tension on that gut....does it go up or down in pitch? sure does.... snare drums that have the guts all tuned to the same tension have better response and sound LIGHT YEARS better than drums that have all of the guts at different tensions(or pitches)
  4. tympani can be tuned to a pitch....how are they different than a snare drum or anything other marching drum, tom, drum set, etc? if each lug is tuned to the same tension, the head will have one true pitch. it's when the heads aren't "trued" that different overtones factor in and the pitch is lost. The snare drum loses its sense of pitch once the guts are turned on, but if you turn off the guts and hit the drum, you should be able to hear the "note" the drum is tuned to. Quads and bass drums absolutely have their own pitches and it should be easy to hear a note when any of the drums are played. Problem is that most people don't understand the need to true the heads and a lot of hs/college/less experienced drum corps drums sound like garbage because they aren't tuned correctly. part of the problem that the original poster may be having is that the A he is tuning to may be in the incorrect octave. A2 will sound very different from A6, but the note is still technically an A
  5. World Class caliber SHOULD mean top 12. One could argue that Academy, Mandarins, PC, etc are not World Class caliber shows either. There is a significant difference in show design/quality that separates them from the "big boys". The World class title should be based on skill set....it's like having a triple A baseball team try and say they're major league quality when they're clearly not...
  6. again, with the passing of the electronics, all of the above voices are open to being sampled through a midi keyboard. NO RULES WILL NEED TO BE BENT TO HAVE DARTH VADER'S, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN'S OR ANYONE ELSE'S VOICE IN THE SHOW....IT WILL ALREADY BE POSSIBLE!!!!!!
  7. that's another thing that can be used with the addition of electronics. voices can be sampled. It has been used effectively in WGI perc the past 3 years and created a very nice effect. Mission Viejo sampled Bonnie Raitt's voice in their show in 06
  8. mandarins are using the new "revolution series" by premier...there's a thread about the new Premier line in the percussion forum as far as tuning is concerned, SCV has the best sounding tuning scheme. cavies snares and basses also sound very nice...not very fond of the quad tuning
  9. blue stars won a div III title in 2001 and 2003, thus they had won a championship previously. Mandarins, Esperanza, Pioneer, Seattle Cascades, Magic, Academy also fall into that category. Capital Regiment was not a champion, had a little success and folded.
  10. All of the corps that had moved up to Div 1 had won a div II/III championship before doing so. Surf has not. Sure they have a big corps, but they will not be able to compete with the "big boys". MAYBE they make semis in World Class, but anything else beyond that is a stretch. They also will not have the tour schedule that will make them competetive with the top tier corps, which brings me to the next point: "but one big one is the ability to perform more often in front of more people." from what i understand, even though Surf will be moving to World Class, their intention is to keep their tour schedule the same as it is now. Two weks at the beginning of July, last 2 weeks heading into finals. Most of the shows they have had, especially this season have been at World shows where they competed in Open Class. If they're going to be performing the same number of shows and they're already at World class shows, what benefit will they get from it? those of you touting how great they are from an administrative side, have you actually witnessed how strong they are in person? haven't we heard the same thing before about many of the other open corps that have moved up to world only to fold a few years later? i personally don't think that, until they win a few championships in open class, that the surf should make the move to world.
  11. no it looks like a metal bar that is attached to the drum in a similar fashion to how you would mount a cowbell. at least i think it's a metal bar....it sounds pretty cool and the texture would work very nicely in a section of a band show that i'm teaching.
  12. does anyone know what the metallic bars the Spartans snares use are called?
  13. 15 ft should cover an entire large set of tenors. I've bought the yamaha version, which the same thing and comes in the same length. it completely took care of a set of 6,6,10,12,13,14. I was too lazy to do the math.
  14. yeah the removal was pretty rediculous. i bet he only saw youtube in the link and immediately assumed there was something "illegal" at the other end of the link.
  15. i don't know if it was done by basf, but weren't the gold drums in 98-99 also painted by a donor to the corps?
  16. blue knights 1991 everything was chrome...it looked bad###
  17. does anyone have the 2000 and/or 2001 finals dvds? PM me if you do....i have a favor to ask. Thanks!
  18. except the sparkle fades that yamaha and pearl have used were actually lacquer finishes.... thickness isn't the only thing that will affect the sound. most of the wraps that these companies use are produced to keep lack of shell resonance at a minimum. that is why most of them use wraps that are produced by the same company, Delmar Plastics. None of these wraps are designed to protect a countertop like the WilsonArt laminates are. They are a much harder surface that is meant to protect the countertop, not promote the resonance of it.
  19. i'll wait until i see the new madison uni on the kids before i pass my judgment...on paper it doesn't quite do it for me. my favorite recent madison uni was the white top they had in 06...very classy look.
  20. open class already has it's own sheets and they are judged on those sheets even when they are at world class shows. again, several years ago, that was not the case...if a II/III corps was at a I show, they were judged on the I sheets. This is no longer the case.
  21. I guess that all depends on the philosophy of the corps. Would you rather be a 20th place World class corps or a top 5 Open class? do those bottom World corps really draw more members than the top open corps? what is the benefit of being world class then? Sure there would be many things that would have to weigh in on how a corps got paid, but that may be up to DCI to do yearly audits of the corps. How is show payment determined? is there a set dollar amount paid to each corps at each show? is payment based on ticket sales for that particular show? how do these corps plan for an undetermined amount of income from doing a particular show? i'm sure the world corps get paid more for the shows they do, but in reality, how much more?
  22. Open class corps aren't required to attend Open Class only shows...in fact most of the open class corps perform at more World shows in a season than they do open shows. Several years ago this was not the case as there were several large Div II regionals that were usually fairly well attended. i agree that the open class should have its own identity, but what is that identity? It shouldn't be that they are smaller corps, because there are a few large corps that also compete in open class. they shouldn't be based on tour schedules because there are several corps that could easily go toe to toe with most of the 12-21 place world class corps. So how do you differentiate between the 2? Skill sets. The sheets need to be changed to reflect that open class is and INTERMEDIATE level while World is ADVANCED. This will allow greater parity and also allow a corps that may have started as open class to be "bumped" to world class during the course of the season. The reverse could also happen, though it would be less likely. Many of the current world class corps may need to drop down to open because of the competetive standards of the class. This would also add much more parity and competetion at both levels. Show format should remain similar to what goes on now, except there should be no Open class only shows. The show should start with Open Class performing first and World Class later. They should both be judged on seperate sheets like they are now. I know nothing about how the corps are paid, but this is how i'd do it. The only thing that would really need to change is the way DCI compensates the corps. Pay scale should be based on what it would take to keep the corps operating at a zero or minimal loss. No corps should be paid more than what would give them to break even. That may meean that DCI needs to monitor all expenses that a particular corps has to incur. A corps of 150 members that has a deal that gives them free horns, drums, and uniforms should not be paid more than a corps that has 150 members that has to buy all of that stuff. The amount of time spent on the road should also reflect a difference in the pay. Member dues, staff payment, food expense, and other variables must come into play as well. Every corps is a non-profit organization, aren't they? No one should come out of the end of the season with more money than they started.
  23. So then let the top 5 open class compete in quarters just like they did in the old days. A corps should not have to take on the added financial implications just so DCI can justify having quarterfinals.
  24. i thought the same thing at first. unless they're using prototypes, Dynasty doesn't make a 13" snare.
