  1. You think of a way to provide those massage therapists, trainers and onsite physicians without raising member dues and I'm SURE corps would make room for them on the road... Clearly this is not as well funded or prominent as the NBA or MLB, but I'll be god-danged if it wasn't as physically demanding. Call it amateur... call it professional... the fact is that DCI is the most elite tier, the highest performance level of this activity in the world. step up to the plate, or stay in the dugout.
  2. This is hard to ask without sounding like a jack###, but did any other corps have trouble marching on the field..? I must admit I chuckled to myself when you mentioned it, considering their backwards march style...
  3. This has to be the biggest bando thread ever. lock..
  4. This makes me want to re-watch my entire DCI collection
  5. Thanks for clarifying... Thats how I count triplets. 1 la li 2 la li sounds so elementary school, and TRI po let trip PO let tri po LET tri po let (pardon the hemiola :)) is a little difficult to vocally articulate for students to understand. regardless.. yes the Iowa bass cadence is triplet based.
  6. Bold = accent. Bottom bass: 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a | repeat 4th bass plays same thing but enters on beat two.. 3rd on beat 3... 2 on 2 and top solos as stated. Go Hawkeyes
  7. Did I say it was a "Boston thing" ? -- first one that came to mind. and the effect worked pretty well. Copied the concept? didn't realize bluecoats had a patent on the idea. crap. guess write a letter and ask permission next time i use it for my h.s. kids...
  8. Theyre only a year old... they sound and look good... drums are notoriously "passed down" to smaller corps or high school/colleges. They were taken care of, I can tell you that, but you're gonna want to be careful crankin the tenor heads. Good luck finding that amount of equipment for that price anywhere else. Hybrid Johnny, how big is your line anyway? If there are 5 or less snares you could even pull a multi section snare solo type thing... (Boston 03..? :)).
  9. Maybe I was misinterpreted: Of course you want to maximize your potential with a championship calibre corps, and it would probably be a far cry to make a line like that without some prior experience. BUT, I sure as hell wouldnt go around professing "yeah, I only came here because I didn't make the corps I wanted. I'll be gone as soon as I can..." . By all means, work for your goals - but do it for the love of playing and performing, not to the disdain of a "stepping stone" corps.
  10. 06: Ludwigs -- The drums are pretty much fine. see my previous post. 07: Pearl -- also sweet 08: Pearl Championship series -- sweet! albeit a fairly.. boring? finish on the drums. A lot of corps seem to have some sort of custom paint job on the shells, but no shame in holding to the classic look :) last 3 years have all been silver drums, so they can get confusing :). I don't know what you're talking about turning yellow from the sun... I doubt it, especially since we only used them for a year. If it really worries you just ask the BS admins for up to date pictures before buying.
  11. 1. If I was with [enter name of Corps you want to exploit to get better] and found out you were just trying to feed yourself up the DCI ladder... You'd get absolutely no respect from me. I'm not alone in this thinking, I'm sure. 2. You're nowhere near good enough for corps yet, and you think you can easily get good enough to make phantom..? (!?!?). We had a rule at auditions: check your ego at the door. It's not just about chops. In fact, chops might even be in the minority. Attitude has a ton to do with it, how well you get along with people, attitude, ability to take what they tell you and adjust, attitude is factored in, marching ability/style, FOCUS/concentration, attitude ... get my point? Paul rennick will also ask you to sight read and solo on command. So yeah, have a nice day with your chops. To answer your question though: practice until you think you can't POSSIBLY tick on it,, and then learn it off the left hand, then backwards, and then mark time in triplets. a.k.a. keep practicing
  12. 1. The caption head was and is Brent Montgomery. Just talked to him this weekend. He's touring with Blue Stars, so I probably wouldn't bother getting a hold of him for something like this... -- Brandon Estes was caption head in 2005. 2. Your only real issue is with the tenors. a) They are heavy as F if youre not in shape, but of course your back will get stronger and adjust to the pain.. or you might just keel over and eat turf. ;-). b) We indeed cannibalized our 5th set of tenors. The tenor rims are a smidge too big for the shells, and when you crank down the head eventually the tension rod just snaps. (think of bending a toothpick...). Sometimes it would break near the top of the tension rod, other times it would be down in the lug casing itself, so the 5th set of tenors has [almost] all lug casings gone - but youd get 4 good sets, and an extra set of fresh drums and rims. They were used for only the 06 tour, and 07 audition camps. They are loud as hell when theyre in tune! Mind you that that is rare ;-). We played on Evans frost. c) The harness-to-drum mechanism is... weird.. - there's no real way (and trust me... we tried) to alleviate the fact that the tenors kindve tilt down, especially when you have em on the stands. We actually got a few compliments from people who though we were doing it on purpose . It in no way effects the playing or quality of sound or overall look, but up-close it is apparent that theyre not quite flat. Snares and basses look and sound good! I have a plethera of pics if you want. PM me for more info. p.s. The link to the blue stars staff is on the home page, under the quick links on the left
