  1. Two from Carolina Crown: End of Bohemian Rhapsody (Bohemia) obscure '07 End of William Tell (Heartbeat during "photo finish")
  2. That Hawthorne and Bridgemen combined version isn't the "Taps for Maynard" that I was asking about. The one I would LOVE to hear was written by Walter White. I think I read that the one played by the combined corps at TOS was by Larry Kirchner (could be misinformed).
  3. Anybody know where I might find either a video or recording of the Statesmen playing this or maybe even a written arrangement of it?
  4. Sorry, don't have time to import a link, but you can easily find it with a search... "Taps for Maynard" Have any corps' ever used this awesome arrangement, maybe for a warm-up or a stand still number? If you had the screamers for it, it could even be effective used as part of a military tribute or war show. What do you guys think?
  5. Eric, Did I see somewhere something about boy/girl scouts and participation in the pre-show flag presentation? (speaking of Night Beat, of course)
  6. Cadets '89 show is definitely one of my all-time favorites. I love the overlapping of songs toward the end, the random flag tosses ending up with the drum major catching the last one, and the burnt edges French flags (of course it doesn't hurt that Les Mis is one of my favorite musicals). One of my favorite parts of the 'pre-show' is when the Garfield 'G' materializes for just a few seconds and then disolves, I'm assuming as a tribute to "Garfield" (wasn't that the first year that they were the "Cadets of Bergen County"?)
  7. OK, what do you think about this idea? First TOC competition of the summer, corps perform in random order (blind draw) and all wearing identical uniforms (shorts and t-shirts, Kakkis and knit shirts, leotards (?)) I don't care as long as nothing visual exists to differitiate the corps from one another. Use a judging panel that has been sequestered for the previous 6-7 months so they have no idea who is playing what, and see how things shake out. Now, I know that uniforms and guard outfits do alot to establish the themes of the shows, but I think it would be cool to see the final result (By the way, how many of you think you could identify all of the top 8 just from their sound or their marching style/program?)
  8. Two encore stories from '92. First show of the season saw Blue Devils in Charlotte NC. Encore they just played their show music. One of the best Encores EVER!! Got to hear "When a Man Loves A Woman" from the fifth row!!! AWESOME! The Next night in Winston Salem NC Star won (still my favorite show from that year). For the encore, they lined up in an arc and played two chorales. Absolutely GORGEOUS sound, but quite a let down from the previous evening's fireworks. Would have loved to hear something from their past shows (Balshazar, just about anything from Roman Images, heck even Close Encounters would be cool), or even their show music would have been better.
  9. ok, my curiosity is aroused. Someone from GuardWorld clue me in. What am I likely to hear from a mic-ed guard?
  10. Got to stand right in front of their hornline as they were doing this at Gardner-Webb University during spring Training. The video doesn't even come close to doing it justice!
  11. Oh, I know! As a semi-professional trombonist and a middle school band director, I fully know what french horns are capable of. Once at an All-District Band Clinic, the guest clinician arranged the band in a circle aroun the stage. It just so happened that the FH section was place on the front of the stage with their bells facing the audience. It made for an interesting 2 hours of obsevation (nothing but FH for 2 hours LOL)
  12. Is the original oster referring to MARCHING French Horns or actual concert french horns (which are currently prohibited along with sousaphones and trombones if I'm not mistaken)? I remember a French Horn soloist being very effective in a HS Marcing band production of Maria from WSS so it COULD be effective, but there is still a completely different sound from an actual french horn and a marching french horn (which is basically a marching euphonium played with a french horn mouthpiece).
  13. I have always thought Star's '92 Patriotic show was under appreciated. I saw that show live several times that year and loved it more every time. I never really got into Cavies show from that year. Cadets did have a strong visual show with some very nice musical moments, but I just really enjoyed what Star put our there that year. I know that the "cheesiness" factor gets thrown out there alot, but think about this, outside of the silks that they used, (which were beautiful) what did they do that was so over the top? Was the music itself considered cheesy? I consider cheesy to be associated with "pandering" to the audience to get cheap response. It wasn't like they recreated the Iwo Jima memorial or 9/11 (by the way, was Suncoast"s Vietnam memorial considered "cheesy"?). They used silks to provide a backdrop for one of the most beautiful ballads ever (Amber Waves), and I thought the "flag" effect at the end was pulled off perfectly. Sorry for the rant, I just think that it was a fun, beautifully played show that doesn't get the respect it deserves.
  14. I'm still missing the sunburst. Is it before or after the step over of the color guard?
  15. OK, so I was just watching the Finis show and LOVE all the drill references they throw in in the last minute of the show. What all was referenced? Here's what I saw, did I miss some? Cadets z-pull Phantom's crab-step wedge Cadets disappearing company front Cavalier's four corners rotating boxes Cavalier's four lines to a box to four lines Was there something else?
  16. Is Crown still at GWU? I thought they were supposed to leave this morning.
  17. OK, don't have much time but here's a quick report. Watched several "chunks" of Paint it Black. Endurance was a little bit of a problem toward the end of the run thru, but there is ALOT of 'meat' in the hornline parts. Once they get their stamina built up, watch out! Keep an eye out for the drum-major at the end of PIB, it's kinda cool (in almost a VK sort of way). The ballad has lots of "Rhapsodic" moments in it with a nice blending of pieces. I like how it comes back around to the first piece at the end . I think certain members of the hornline are doing a good job with the "balance" issues at the end of the ballad (you'll get it once you see it). Really looking forward to seeing this show come together. It should be fun! Will try to get more details over the next two weeks. T-Mac
  18. Well I haven't been able to get out there much, but I did get to stand in front of the hornline arc during their warm-up last night (NICE!). I did see about 10 minutes of rehearsal the other night and it is really going to be interesting. All I can say is that is in that particular section, it was like to a rock concert and a piano recital broke out. Granted, it was a very short snippet, but should be interesting. I hope to get over a little more over the next 2 weeks. Nice to know someone noticed and missed me.
  19. Thanks for the info. I've been wondering that for several years. Is there a good "official" recording or video of that year's program (2000)?
  20. Wow! That's quite a list. OK, so was Camina Burana on this list (or did the list even exist) in 2000?
  21. OK, so when was it placed on the "no play" list (and for that matter, what else is on this "list"?) or did Blue Stars decide to just buck the system in 2000?
  22. First off, does anyone know where I can find a recording of their arrangements of Carmina Burana? Second, All I ever hear is that it is extremely difficult to get the rights for this music. How then did Blue Stars get the rights? I would LOVE to hear Carolina Crown do and entire show of CB (Can't you just hear O Fortuna with that hornline!!!?)
  23. Vanguard (the one from Santa Clara) references the Bottle Dance and their cymbals do that 'Viper' thing
