  1. I like the basic SCV t-shirt, with the logo on the left side in front. I had a basic Kingsmen tee that I bought in Ithaca in '74 that quickly got beaten up 'cause I wore it so much. That blue color was cool.
  2. Tommy Loy. What an amazing musician. I live in the Dallas area and had the opportunity to hear Tommy play jazz and dixieland with various groups over the years. Even as he was nearing 70 years old his chops never waned. He died a couple of years ago. Here is a link to an archive of the news piece. http://ml.islandnet.com/pipermail/dixielan...ber/004276.html What a classy guy. We all loved him and miss him. Thank you for the memory-jog and the link.
  3. Another thing about Argonne . . . I'm pretty sure I saw them on an NFL game halftime, when they used to show the bands/corps. It was probably a Chiefs or Broncos home game. The Troopers did the same. I can remember Curt Gowdy saying nice things about the Troopers. Anyone remember that high-note trumpeter who used to play the National Anthem before Cowboys home games on TV? I think it was Tommy something. He had some good chops.
  4. 70sxmenbass (whoever you are): do you remember that show we had in '75 against Bridgemen and Saints in the AC Convention Center? Was that a bad place for a show or what? Also, I remember seeing Bridgemen at a standstill show in N. Jersey the following winter, and they played some of the '76 music, but I think they were in street clothes, not the new unis. Anyway, we could tell they were going to be a lot better than in '75. Were you there?
  5. You were fortunate to be part of those SCV corps. I had some "brushes with greatness" . . . Chorazy taught our line for a while, and there was a guy in '72 and '74 SCV who I knew at school. Then he marched in '75 Muchachos!
  6. Even though it does not have SCV '74, which was my original motivation for buying it, I still like the McCormick tape because, obviously, '73 was a great show, too. Plus, the tape has Stan Kenton praising drum corps, Royer saying some interesting things (and asking the older kids to take care of the young ones - very cute), and with the fan and corps member interviews, it really takes me back to that era. The cover of the tape is bizarre, though . . . it has a picture of what looks like a Marine D&B Corps drum major on it. Thanks to all who answered regarding a tape of the '74 show. I'll follow your leads.
  7. Where can I get the video you're talking about? I've always wanted a video of '74 SCV. I bought the McCormick "Competitive Drum Corps" video because it says "1974" and "Santa Clara Vanguard", but it's about '73 SCV . . . I guess it was released in '74.
  8. '74 Vanguard had such a fantastic show. Ithaca was the first time I ever saw the corps (my first DCIs). I still love listening to it. The drum solo is the greatest . . . these days drum solos just don't have that rudimental hop to them . . . now it's all about jamming in as many notes as possible.
  9. Saw them in '74 when they finished 13th at Prelims. Was that their best corps ever? I was wishing they had made Finals (Blue Stars didn't impress me too much).
  10. They've all been named, but I just want to point out the great Jersey trio . . . Kievet, Chez, and Diamond Jim Brady. And the last 2 marched together in the Saints before joining the bigger corps. That's a lot of talent from one area at one time.
  11. Short and simple version then... (excerpted quote from an old post on RAMD) "There were members who marched with the Santa Clara Vanguard in 1989 who were found to be over age. This was discovered during the last two weeks of the season. They were from England. They had falsified passports good enough to fool U.S. Customs. There was one snare drummer and one french horn player. The identification that they used to enter this country made them federal criminals..." Full Article Thanks, mobrien.
