  1. why do you think this negates to original premise? because some of the same folks are involved?
  2. yeah well that "cluttered mess" just won the BOA National Championships lol Maybe a video with a fuller view of the field would appear less cluttered...
  3. I'm hoping for a completely different approach. I honestly thought the 2015 design was one of the worst "top corps" designs in recent years. So corny and unmusical - a terrible combination. Thank god the members worked hard to make up for the design.
  4. Cool. No I didn't sit in a Cadets block... Just my perspective on it. Sounds like we all remember the terrific Regiment response. And I totally agree that BD got a great reaction from the crowd. Meaty/muscular is a great word for some of those 93 programs!
  5. They "parted ways" aka he was let go. And the guard was loaded with vets from their top 3 guard a year earlier...
  6. totally agree. But Cadets show was very well-received at the time... That's all I was saying.
  7. They are. They also use the BOA bands as test tube subjects at times... I was just honestly taken aback by last seasons (several) weak designs in the top group of corps (IMO of course) And hitting the indoor circuit and a couple band regionals - just some very creative stuff going on... Mostly I'm trying to stimulate some conversation of another sort. How the designers and instructors move between the two activities Many of the WGI folks avoid DCI. I do know that for a fact.
  8. he was commenting on overall crowd reaction Here's how it went in 93 - Cadets show right out of the gate OOZED GE. It was by far the most popular show on the circuit until the last 3 weeks. The opener drew "gasps" as the snare line ran around and the guard just kept going and going. The ballad push to the audience was another standing O. The ending was another standing O. Extreme GE in that program. Crowds LOVED IT Stars show was "love or hate" - as it traveled east and to finals the reaction improved. It wasn't very well received in the midwest or texas. By the time it reached Jackson with a more experienced audience and improved execution it got a decent response.. Regiment was the 1993 dark horse. The show grew and grew. It went from "strange" to becoming quite popular by worlds. The show was dramatically restaged during the season. They added the crab step ending to the opener and repeated it at the end - became a big WOW. Then they restaged the ballad and added leaving the helmets and marching around them - and the ballad just grew and grew and become another huge wow. 4 standing O's at finals. I'll never forget that season and that top 3 - one for the ages.
  9. sure. All the standing O's and dropped jaws during 1993 during Cadets performances were all in my imagination
  10. some of the DCI folks do the gig in order to make a name for themselves which they parlay into great marching band gigs BA has a huge DCI connection with the top 3 corps no doubt
  11. 1993 Cadets show was boring? Wow. I'll just chalk this whole post up to false memories
  12. Agreed in that the program is much easier than a top 12, but is highly effective. Which is why I'm claiming "superior design" DCI design place so many challenges upon the performers (see Cadets 2015) - but is it as effective? Not always...
  13. design - not execution I'd say the visual design is better, guard design is better and the musical design is very strong. All JMO in comparison to Cadets 2015
  14. Tarpons show is incredible this year (and last) I find it concerning that the "Design level" is either 1. so close or 2. HS or Indoor >> than DCI. That's what I mean by designers/instructors "avoiding" DCI. Is it the pay? The schedule? The heat? The wind? The egos?
  15. Offered in discussion of: Top instructors and designers AVOIDING DCI? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMxTzPmKedg I'm thinking specifically of this program in comparison to: 2015 Phantom Regiment, 2015 Cadets, 2015 Cavaliers, 2015 etc... I'd (personally) put BD, Bluecoats, Blue Knights etc above this one in terms of design
  16. agreed - Jarrett and several others are terrific additions, along with the guard caption head and the lead guard designer... hoping for a great visual program out of them this year...
  17. No. they were well received there. The show (earlier and mid season) was booed in the midwest. Regiment had the loudest response at finals, then Cadets, then probably Star.
  18. So who said Star was "loudly booed" in Jackson???
  19. Someone said star was loudly booed in Jackson at finals? Who, where, when? Personally I saw Suncoast many times the two years in question. I remember a polite reception in 87 but it was pretty boring. 88 = loved it!
  20. The Westin is nice. The JW Marriott is where I stay. Just searched around Lucas Oil Stadium or the convention center and select in your own price range. If I can help more message me.
