  1. My son is involved with the music program where he goes to school, but is not a music major. That allows him to have a concert tuba to practice on. Not the exact same as a contra, but close enough to keep his lips in shape. He also has an old trombone he plays for fun to keep up. Where there is a will there is a way. BloooTubaDad
  2. Not sure what you mean by the Bluecoats rehashing "old hits" unless you mean the Phantom of the Opera peice, but I will move on from the point. One reason may be costs and copyright rules. Many of the classical pieces, I think, are public domain, and would be less expensive, maybe free, for a corps to perform. Just an idea. BloooTubaDad
  3. My son marched the Bluecoats after his senior year in HS (2010) skipped a year to raise funds for this year, and is the contra section leader for the Bluecoats. He is an EE major with no plans at all in music. If you enjoy music and it has been a part of your life, and are willing to put in the work, you should be fine. BloooTubaDad
  4. Well they will be in Centerville on Tuesday Aug 7 and Wed Aug 8. Did you go to the Soaring Sounds Show?

  5. Bloo competed against Crown in the first show of the season at Akron. BloooTubaDad
  6. 33rd annual Soaring Sounds show at Centerville HS stadium. Legends Teal Sound Spirit of Atlanta Madison Scouts INT Bluecoats Carolina Crown Cavaliers Show starts at 7PM
  7. The Teal Sound site is incorrect for their housing location for July 9/10/11. They will be staying at the Lakota West HS in West Chester Ohio. That is for the 9th. I am not sure where they will be on July 10/11 but it is not Centerville HS. BloooTubaDad
  8. Just a quick note to welcome you to DCI Planet Forums. As you can tell, we have something in common. :) Not sure where you are located but I am in Centerville Ohio, where the Coats will be in two weeks. Any questions please let me know.

  9. I have a kid in the BC and I would have a problem saying that they are far superior to the BD. I hope that they are .05 better on finals night though. I saw the last hour of their run through last night, and they have added some things that have helped, I think. Of course the BD are not sitting on their hands during this time either. msquared
  10. Have not seen all the shows, but at the Centerville show the Scouts had the crowd going wild. msquared
  11. Have to agree with oldbandguy, easily one of the most enjoyed shows of the night, even over the local favorite the Bluecoats. Non band/drum corps people found it much more accessible then the shows by SCV and Bluecoats. msquared
  12. My son graduated from HS this year and made the Bluecoats. Due to his excellent academic performance over the past 4 years, he was allowed to leave school early and go to move ins. He did have to come back for Fine Art week where all the music groups he belonged to performed. He also had to miss 3 days for Recognition Assembly and graduation. The corps worked with him and us and it has worked out fine for him. msquared
  13. For the first time in 4 years of running the housing I was final able to see al the shows. I have to agree with oldbandguy. The Scouts put on a hell of a show. A real crowd pleaser. My parents, who are not band people, thought it was the best of the night. As they said "It was music we knew" and it was major sections of the pieces, not just snippets. The Scouts had many face the audience and blast their faces off moments, and the crowd ate it up. As a side note, I think that drum corps would be able to draw more people like my parents if more corps did shows like the scouts. There seems to be a line between enjoyable and good, to the general public. I am not saying this is right/wrong, just what I observed from the crowd. Other than Centerville being a bit of a homer location for the Coats, the Scouts were the crowd favorite. I heard Blooo talking after the show and they thought that their scores had been surpressed some due to the Vanguard being the only other top corps there and the Vanguard having been 6th in Atlanta. msquared
  14. I started a thread on it. check a few pages back. msquared
  15. I do the housing for our local DCI show, Soaring Sounds, in Centerville, Ohio. I have done the housing for the past 4 years. We usually have 6 world class corps and one or two open class corps. Only our high school can handle all the needs of a world class corps. I think all we are required to supply them are a place to sleep, a place to practice and a place to shower. All the top corps want more. They want 3 football fields, all with elevatio and lights, even if they are not in town over night. They want a dozen rooms to sleep in. The want an ice maker, etc. Now all of the corps I have dealt with have been very flexible. We normally house the Bluecoats at our HS. They are from Ohio and we have people on our staff who are on their staff. We also have several recent grads who are marching with them, including my son. They come to our show every year. The other corps are housed at local schools. We do a ticket exchange. We give the school band progam X number of tickets in exchange for housing a corps. One school has an open class show a week after our show and we exchange housing with him. He houses a couple of world class corps for me and I house a couple of open class corps for him. In the 4 years I have done this I have house the Blue Devils twice, the Cavs once, the Bluecoats 4 times and the SCV once. I have never had a problem with how the corps leave the schools. In fact I have been able to convince admins to let us house at their schools once, and once they have, they realize how good the corps are. My biggest problem is that many schools are taking out showers as they remodel. All my middle schools used to have showers and now only 1 does. msquared

  18. What's this about parents paying for their kids fee's? My kid paid his own fees, so I guess I am money ahead. Except for all the time off work to get him to and from camps. The price of tickets when he is at shows with in an hour of home. The price of Finals tickets, the cost of hotel rooms for finals, food on the road and the gas money. Cost of doctor's visit and fungal cream when he is at a show near home. I figure I have spent as much on him this summer as I normally would have. However, he is getting into great shap and will, I think, be more prepared for college in a few weeks. After spendig 7 weeks on a bus with college kids, he will have some idea of what it is like to live in a dorm. msquared
  19. His name is Geoff but he goes by Geo. He and Bryce are both from Centerville. Tim Fairbanks, who does the drill design for Blooo, is our drum guy. He is picture 26 on your site. BloooTubaDad
  20. New member here. As my name says, I have a son on the contra line in the Bluecoats. All the talk about the BD first show tonight made me look this up. The BD only march in 24 shows this season. The Bluecoats march in 30. Will that have any significant bearing on the results? Is this common for the west coast corps to march fewer shows? BloooTubaDad
