  1. I know his name only because I knew him prior to being Duffy.
  2. Wow, I didn't think that was Giant. I thought he was much taller and believed it was the other person that had a crew cut (athough there were more than a few) who was very light skinned. (maybe from Norwood-although I believe I was at Giants home in 72 with Darla and it may have been Norwood also). I know I had a crush on I believe his name was Bobby from Norwood who was a marching major - maybe 72 or 73? Giant looked so beautiful in that uni the night of finals in 94!
  3. Hi Jim. He's running to give back a dropped rifle. He's almost to the lad in this picture.
  4. Maybe I didn't make it clear. Violence is not appropriate.
  5. People do some strange things when the pressure is on and you're on an exhaustive tour, hungry, totally burnt out, etc. I've witnessed some pretty shameful riot acts so to speak and I remember one winter being told that the thinnest and prettiest would be up the front so you better get in shape. People basically stayed the same weight but it was embarrasing for many members. As well, touching someone is out of the question and it would not have happened on my watch, but I've heard that it's happened in some corps. Pulling or pushing someone into their spot is over the top and a rifle butt would have become an accessory of any staff member who would dare. But that's just me....."Severe from Revere" - too severe for my own good but I actually never abused my position and was quite shy about it.....went right back into line when announced. I don't believe someone becomes a leader in a corps and the next minute should be critiquing other members.....I know.....insecure....
  6. Hi J! Do you remember the Reveries and us playing that when we were still tots? I still remember the very basic saber work, but I loved that work. Sandy McCleavy was the guard captain in her beautiful red uniform.....on saber...
  7. This is kind of to the side of this topic but here goes. I believe it was 1979, Peggy Twiggs asked the DM to direct the guard thru the show. No music, just him directing and us first standing still doing our work, then on to the field with drill. Has anyone else ever done this? Peggy was a trail blazer as many people know and some of her ideas were out of site. I loved the idea actually. I thought about it for a long time when she mentioned it prior to announcing it........
  8. Would tossing against a wall give them the feeling they need to correct what each might be doing wrong or would that be too dangerous if they are beginners? I don't remember as a beginner that happening but I believe the thumb was flat against the rifle, in other words not gripping with the left thumb. Don't know if this helps. There should be like 10 other ways to get the spin in the air not twist but right now my mind is a blank. I will try to remember. Good luck!
  9. 1964 maybe....I was 5 and loved and appreciated it even then. Then came the Reveries sit down which was both a blast and very scary for me, my Dad helping to get the corps in, and my sisters on the field sitting down.....truly an awesome experience!
  10. Of couse I realize you're kidding but I believe equipment (double silks) may have been a tad different than drill or the roll step. You can definitately trace some objects but not things like a step.
  11. Believe me around here there would be BAC, North Star, Defenders and so many others who were quite impressive....it would be a difficult process to pick a winner I would think.....
  12. I remember winning parades.....don't know who judged them, but I know in the 70s George B would not move the buses for less than I believe it was $5K however that was not payment for the win. Didn't an Indian Chief crown the Troopers winners at 1 parade and we were a tad upset... :P
  13. People used to beg Zingali and people from St. Anthony's to patent double silks so that every corps would not have the benefit of extra GE, etc. Zingali told me specifically he did not want to profit from them nor did he feel it a bad thing for other corps to use them.....anyone who knows him would totally understand - that was Zingali.
  14. I apologize that I didn't read all 37 pages but I have to say that I so wish I could have spoken to my Dad everyday while on tour. He loved drum corps and would get so excited when I would call which might have been 1 time all summer. If there was a phone there was a line, and it was painful to have to rush when there was so much to talk about. Especially the scores!
  15. I believe you can see the full photo on North Stars website. Let me go and see if that has more corps......
  16. I guess we find our own magic. I've seen some extraordinary things done over the past 6 years however it's all relative. I don't feel the same although I hoot and holler and go crazy at most shows, I don't believe there are enough magical moments. It doesn't take much to impress me - PRs V with leg out (a move from the past) not difficult but remembered by so many....sometimes it's the little things that are magical for me.
  17. I'm sorry, I have no doubt that the players are talented and work hard however I was talking about the GE aspect I guess. Aim your flute to the box-see what I mean-it just doesn't even make sense. The sound for me is a huge issue of course, but the look would also be undesirable for me!!
  18. I agree with all that you mentioned above. I spoke to Denise about the HOF at one point. She had just been honored by WGI with I believe the "Laurel Wreath" and she was quite happy with that. I still believe she deserves to be in the HOF. I used to call it the Hall of Shame (so few women), then Peggy was inducted and I know things will be looking up.
  19. Good point, however your definition of excellence might be different from others. Excellence in the way I think drum corps should be is that intimidating look, the guard no longer has it and I tend to watch the corps proper lately. I've seen very good bands and it still does not give the feeling of "drum corps" excellence so to speak. Just my 27 cents....
  20. I agree, and I hope you're correct! I'd like to throw something out there and if you don't agree, please tell me why: Do you think that the posture and marching that you expect of drum corps can be seen in someone playing a flute or clarinet? I don't mean the 200 bpm-I mean just a corps marching in can be intimidating to a new person or even seasoned veterans. The arms out, the making yourself look taller, stronger and like a wall and looking at and thru someone has a certain toughness and agression that I don't believe can be seen in woodwinds on the field. It doesn't fit for me. I also don't like the sound, but that's just me!
  21. I bought one of these and use it, however I'm not sure if it would help with your chops.....
  22. Hi bobk9258, Ms. Malibu who did post pictures of BAC was the person who made the collages for me. It was the top 12 from 1980, my age out year. However I will look around as I do have some pics and will also answer your PM shortly. that rifle line just looks as awesome as I remember them!!!
  23. Sorry, I didn't read all posts here but for me it seemed to be almost "old school" - great music and actual WOW moments. I mean the horn line kneeled and threw a leg out and the crowd went wild. It's the little things in life and in shows that sometimes get to me.....
  24. If it's 81 then it's not Cliff unless it was an exhibition. Did Bouchy march in 81, it looks more like him, much smaller/thinner than Cliffy...... Actually it looks too tall to be Mikey B. OOPS SORRY, THERE WE WENT MAKING IT ABOUT US AGAIN......
