  1. Given that the Alumni era of DCA has been going on for quite the while, and that time moves on and waits no one as we age... will there be an alumni of the Alumni division spectacular????
  2. Former C1 baritone and drum major Zack Travis (West Chester U., now teaching at Norristown H.S.) will be C2's brass caption supervisor according to the published webinar notes given by GH and Gino on Cadets website today. Zack was well liked during his teaching time for the Reading Buccaneers and rated quite notable thanks they posted on DCP. http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/161172-meet-the-2015-reading-buccaneers-brass-staff/ Last summer Zack worked wonders with C1's baritone section for the time he was able to be with them as well as with C2.. Average age of C2 corps is given as 16, usually between 14-19. Much more details here: http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1046-recap-brass-talk-with-gino with guard call-in discussion on Weds. night and percussion on Thursday night. cf. site. Both corps to keep right foot step off even with new designer for Cadets and Sacktig at Cadets2.
  3. Some new Cadet info: They'll be marching 76 horns including 16 mellophones. They will keep the right foot step off, even with a new drill designer. Yamaha is late sending out new horns this year. More audition specifics and details of Gino's discussion with brass included here: http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1046-recap-brass-talk-with-gino Percussion and guard phone-in discussions will be later this week, Weds. night for the guardies, Thurs. night for the drummers. Let's Go Mets!
  4. I know of a St. Patrick's Day parade that actually gave a faux trophy for any musical unit which played something other than Garyowen or Jim Wedge's arrangement of Danny Boy (both which were heard a zillion times up the Avenue.)
  5. Been there. Done that. Wish you the best and success! Quite of few DCI alums there at U Washington from West Coast corps, Phantom Regt. and Cadets amongst many. Check Med school and bio labs for some great people.
  6. Sitting waiting for the rain to stop and the show to continue... The irony struck me that the accusations are that the Cadets' presentations have been too traditional, staging inadequate, props too cumbersome, and flow of show lacking GE (if I summarize all the DCP posters delegated as junior judges.) The irony is that YEA holds more band contests than any other US group, touts 750 schools as participating, and should be able to reap the combined entertainment/GE/performance wisdom of 750 units x size of show faculty for each unit. From this perspective, the Cadets should be the most creative, innovative, and challenging of all show designs. As all of DCI has been accused the last 20 years of merely mimicking what some band or WGI unit did a season before, maybe the staff needs to include designated "spies" to glean what is the best of each of these non-DCI performances, copyists to catalog these effective moments, and weavers to build a show that moves beyond the repetition, cerebral challenges, and technical exercises. For instance, speed and aggression in percussion excites the crowd; what else does? Hey, that may be its own DCI show title: The Gleaners and The Weavers. just thinking aloud.
  7. Angry? Stop playing junior shrink. You are not good at it. Depth of concept is on the sheet. The judge may disregard original meaning of piece if the corps presents another concept with it. Having been part of a committee which formed the sheets, I know that literalism is not one of the tools used by the DCI judging community who well appreciates nuances.
  8. Excellent question... for which he gives a partial answer: "...Either I hired folks that were not meant to work for YEA! and were asked to leave, Or I hired folks that were excellent but stayed for only a year or so, Or I hired folks that simply were not of the mindset to handle the excitement of working with a volatile and growing not for profit. One way or the other … I have not had the partner financially, who will see things through with the team and (me) on a day-to -day basis. And it drives me crazy, and I bet it drives the YEA! Board crazy."
  9. While Hugh had retired from Cadets staff by the time Dr. Joe Cinzio brought me to Garfield, Pete Dubinski (father of Star of Indiana snare tech) continued to drive until Hopkin's took over. All of them great guys of whom I have fond memories. I worked with Hughie when he spent time with L.I. Kingsmen drill staff.
  10. Right you are. Sept. 19th. Now, who is going to do "ground testing" to go along with the "sound testings" for the Florida shows? You know Florida, Sink-hole Central USA!
  11. Horn Teacher is a man ahead of his time. On the DCI FB page today they are showing SoundSport Lithuania! (http://play.tv3.lt/programos/koncertai/667606?autostart=true Who sez Indy office doesn't listen to DCPers? https://www.facebook.com/drumcorpsinternational http://play.tv3.lt/programos/koncertai/667606?autostart=true
  12. ok, thanks. I thought it would go here: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/forum/59-historical-junior-corps-discussions/ Maybe another thing the admins need to ask their grandkids about: how do I do ....?
  13. For Championships yes. There are still "Regionals," quasi-regionals, big shows, and sponsored shows as in "... voiced speculation that the new NFL stadium in Santa Clara might provide a great venue for drum corps, be a possible place for SCV to host its anniversary in 2017, and provide an alternative for the regional should the Cardinal band actually need its stadium for a drill rehearsal at Stanford."
  14. This bus was what ferried MikeD from performance to performance bitd; bidding details soon to be announced, so get your shrine space ready:
  15. Funny thing is I was going to forward the job op to you. But then I said to myself, "Self, would you want him to leave his beloved Ohio, his son, and a well run drum corps contest in order to live in George's office?" But here's the link in case you get bored while the kid's on tour: http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1036-the-search-for-a-finance-manager but understand it with this which Hopkins previously posted: SEARCHING FOR AN ELUSIVE FINANCIAL MANAGER !!!! I have been here working at this organization for close to 40 years. I have been the CEO since 1983. From the beginning, when I did my own accounting, to today, when we have income of over $6 Million dollars, financial reporting and management has always been an issue. Either I hired folks that were not meant to work for YEA! and were asked to leave, Or I hired folks that were excellent but stayed for only a year or so, Or I hired folks that simply were not of the mindset to handle the excitement of working with a volatile and growing not for profit. One way or the other … I have not had the partner financially, who will see things through with the team and I on a day-to -day basis. And it drives me crazy, and I bet it drives the YEA! Board crazy. So what do we need and why do I write openly? We need a Controller To be specific we need is someone who is a cross between a CFO and a Controller. We do not have the financial resources to be paying 6 figures for the position, and frankly, there are times when life here is pretty stable. BUT, we are seasonal, and when we hit band season, the workload can be crazy. The income arrives quickly and the expenses can pile up. Checks have to be written for an assortment of judges, and stadiums, and much else. It’s just a wild time! You will have a bookkeeper, you will have even 2 and there are seasonal staff .. you are not alone, but on the other hand you will NOT have a staff of 10. And we do need analysis. Frankly, for 30 years I have worried about money. I worry we spend too much. I worry we have invested too much into programs and I worry we do not have the resources to survive rain and snow each Fall! And most of my worry, is just something I carry. Day and night. It comes with the territory. But if you are reading this still, you might be the person who can be a real partner. Are you the person who can provide a monthly review on the 10th of the month? Complete with ideas ?? are you the fiscal hero who can manage department heads who do great work but know only a bit of the financial world? And can you, with help from me, come forward with ideas for the better use of human and all other resources? This is not a finance job where you do the numbers and sit back. This is about making programs better. This is about growing what we have done here to what we cannot even imagine ?? Do you want to make a difference for kids? Do you have finance skills? Do you want to have a say in what happens today and for many years to come? Write to me now Write to me at .... hopkins@yea.org I will hire tomorrow but if you are all the above, chances are you are employed and I may have to wait ? and I will wait. I may have to wait? But for the right person who has the out and out passion for all we do we will do, I will do, all that is necessary .... this I promise.
  16. No, I'm not discussing boisterous fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in '07. No, it's not a thread about the victimization of the West being bypassed but that once in DCI's 40 plus years. But at Indianapolis last year there was voiced speculation that the new NFL stadium in Santa Clara might provide a great venue for drum corps, be a possible place for SCV to host its anniversary in 2017, and provide an alternative for the regional should the Cardinal band actually need its stadium for a drill rehearsal at Stanford. Then along comes this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/russell-wilson-turf-monster-levis-stadium_562a2ee7e4b0ec0a3894076e?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592 Would DCI drill designers, techs, and MMs find it suitable at all?
  17. Shouldn't this topic be in the historical junior corps thread as Orbits were never a DCA corps but competed in L.I.M&M, Greater NY, and Brooklyn CYO. Mods? Jim Lawrence of Carolina Crown's BoD marched here. The Sacktig family (including Jeff) marched the other Ridgewood parish corps, St. Mathias Blue Max.
  18. is BD's number including the equivalent worth of the frequent flier miles???
  19. Jim Prime should write it and Donnie Van Doren should teach it. They both marched the last years of the Chessmen from Easton, PA before the corps folded and they aged out as Muchachos.
  20. In post on corps' website today looking for a new CFO, GH quotes the figure of YEA being a 6 million dollar operation. Hmm, difference of four million ($4,000,000.00) is not to sneezed at. and no, it wasn't a certain someone's severance package.
  21. Yup. But the DCP admin will still have to ask their grandchildren what to do. "No, Gramps, that;s not the remote channel changer for the TV! That's your cellphone"
  22. Gentlemen, please. The Academy played this in 2009. Check corpsreps.com and your tapes for that year.
  23. Wrong! BD has more DCI wins. When one adds the National titles Cadets won before BD and DCI existed and when national contests included often more than 100 corps participating in what today we call "World Class", Cadets (same corps in its 82 year history) has won more titles. Cavaliers come in second. Don't be myopic.
