  1. Lightly packed and ready to travel tomorrow!! Excited for my 4th SA trip! 6 Indy pilgrimages, and 2 for BOA. Will do BOA again but (never say never) ‘18 is my last Indy DCI. I said that in ‘16 (...we shall see). BOA is a quick in and out Pre-Thanksgiving treat! The snow was a novelty that this Cali guy enjoyed and we don’t do band “indoors” in California. Sorry I’m State Fair, bbq and Speedway’d out! I seek out housing/practice sites and thoroughly enjoy watching the home stretch process. 4 kids from our program, 3 with BD! Rotate Finals again! Love making a vacation week culminating in Finals. My first finals in 1986, with a return years later because it’s Madison...loved I&E’s here! So green and a lake in town?!? Kansas City, the stadium on the hill I couldn’t find. No GPS! Buffalo “oops I did it again!” Who goes to Buffalo twice! ME!! Phantom of the Opera was the highlight of my DCI travels! Red eye flight, ahh to be young again! Real Buffalo wings at a dive bar and the falls... Foxboro- Stadium tour and Beantown was Magic!! 3 trips to Orlando and MaGiC!!! Expensive but Disney! Miss “Spirit of Disney”- is Citrus Bowl still standing? “New York, New York” memories from College Park 2000...Pasadena- in my backyard and soooo California Classic!! 2000’s Memories Traveling with 6 other “fan”astic folks...and my hype... years of wearing every finalist performers shirts as they performed. (They still fit)! Wow....l digress ....ahhh thank you DCI, and the activity I love...Bring on the screaming Texas bandos!!
  2. Thanks for the "schoolin" I wonder how many times I've misinterpreted others...(not losing sleep over it) <insert righteous indignation here> Have a good one Cappy, I do enjoy your commentary btw...
  3. My intent wasn't to preach or being judgmental. I too have been in your position and wanted the best for my students. I was just trying to see the disconnect. I pour over our judges tapes and try to put the lesson in the competitive season for my kids. Sorry, as I reread my post I realized I made you cry...
  4. So 1 judge speaking to your high school band(?) program used the recipient of most DCI Championships as an example of being "best"? Perhaps his message was lost in his delivery. Perhaps your bias clouded his message? A judge doesn't necessarily have the pedigree to "teach". My takeaway from your post is 1 judge became all judges...I am not arguing your concern, just the absoluteness of the statement. I suggest you listen to the judging critiques posted on youtube. Listening to them, especially percussion has made me a more educated instructor/judge AND fan.
  5. Actually I was speaking to a principle that was obviously lost on you. And my reference to screaming was secondary to the point I conveyed. Your conclusion is your own!
  6. People freak out over teenage guard screams and are upset when stank eye doesn’t deter them, yet seemingly, accept the above behaviors... oh what a world! The discussion was to educate these incorrigible young ladies. i believe I would have offset the groans and mumbles with unabashed adoration, yes screaming even toward said group(s). One persons “ you’ll never march with that band is another’s “ You’ll Never Walk Alone.” #notthatfather
  7. Thanks for your opinions, insight and respectful dialogue All!! Thoroughly enjoyed our night, and I wish you all musical dreams (with a minimum of screaming band girls).
  8. We missed out on the Cadets this year... best coast missed you mightly!!!
  9. If the screamers get to you avoid the dome shows...Go to outdoor shows only, too hot for the snowflakes!
  10. Fake it 'til u make it! Fist pump or dab to come! I didn't care for the "wink" either...
  11. I (we) get you too, Jim. Save your 'tude, I suggest you read the posts more carefully...you sound the bias "fan Man". Are you still in a bad mood because cuz of all the yelling over guard catches? Maybe your who should leave it to the youngsters...btw Bloo drum problems didn't start last night!
  12. Btw it’s the first time Allan specifically and many of the judges saw these shows field level. Do you know the hours any field judge spends mapping a show? To know when to be where isn’t a random walk on the field... Jesus Christ, never mind!!
  13. Allan has been on many of the panels, prelims thru finals of the past 20+ years. I’ve seen his acrobatic judging as he strives to “see” the “hear”. He was band director at my Alma Mater and critiqued different WGI lines I’ve worked with. A consummate professional. Those armchair comments previously posted not withstanding I want to commend the judging community in general on an increasingly subjective art form. Have a king of beer or 2 after tonight’s show.
  14. Very familiar with 4 of these judges, BOA and WGI. Very respected on this coast.
  15. Allan returned Crown's snare drum when it was dropped at finals in '14! Class act (from CLOVIS)!!
  16. at the risk of sounding like a dirty old man I reread the previous comments regarding "Natural Woman"... I came to the same conclusion....
