  1. I think the story on the Odello family is cool. Living on the west coast and going to all the WC drum corps shows, I've always heard the "odello" name. It's neet to hear the story in total. Rock on.
  2. It has come to my attention (by no fewer than three emails from three different people in the last 7 hours) that you are selling a shirt that says "Rock out with your Glock out". Apparently, I have become famous ( or infamous) for saying something close to this statement at the start of our show all 4 years I marched. I MUST find out how I can procure one of these shirts. PM me. Rock out with your co...GLOCK out. ^0^
  3. The truth of the matter is, like you said...humans are judging. There's politics. There's local bias. Bad indigestion. Maybe one of the corps songs reminds the judge of an old girlfriend. Whatever. With most people, when "their" corps loses, it's politics. When "their" corps wins, they deserved it. However, I will say, the original poster's question does deserve some wonderment. I mean, it's not like one judge saw a corps as 1st place and the other judge saw it as 2nd place. If the division really is that wide where one judge saw Corps A as first place and Corps B as last place, and the other judge saw the exact opposite, it's worth wondering. I'm someone who doesn't give a #### about scores and judges sheets, so I have no idea: is there a "critique" after DCA?
  4. We have a super-duper artist alum, Lani, who is an "ar-teest extraordinaire". If you take all the knowledge in the world of cartooning and anime and and got rid of it, that's how much knowledge I have, (heh) but I understand this type of art is called "chibi". Anyway, she did a few of random people in our corps. (She did mine). I told her if she did some of a bunch of different corps she could sell them like hotcakes!!!! She's really good!
  5. It's been a couple of years since I've schlepped my #### on the field, but I can guarantee you it's stuff like this that means 7 x more than any trophy from Jim's Trophy shop. Besides the fact that the corps philosphy has ALWAYS been "The only corps we have to beat is the previous year's Renegades", we have so many people in our corps that marched Vanguard, Blue Devils, VK, Kingsmen, Madison, half a dozen other "big boys" during "the big years".... (I think between staff and marchers, we probably have a hundred or so "rings") it's like "We've already done the win-win, kill-kill, win at any cost thing. Now just sit back, relax and let me entertain the #### out of you". ^0^ I know there's people that say "Haven't you already overdone the "evil" thing?". My response has always been "And do what? Just do some cookie cutter, looks like the previous three corps' shows? Or worse: some rehash of <insert Jr. Corps Show here>???" No thanks. This is who we are, who we've always been, and (I hope) who we'll always be. I am such a proud Renegade alum....if I was any more "prouder" I'd be two people. Thanks for keeping it real, Renegades. I love you. B)
  6. This is definitely not a first year thing for them. Even in an era where there's no such thing as a "local" drum corps anymore, BD Has always been entrenched and involved in the local music programs and kids in the area. THAT'S how you do a drum corps! (and yeah...I know they're not the only ones).
  7. While we're at it...let's re-state the obvious. Cadets are NOT the new Star. there's a period at the end of that sentence.
  8. Man you are a glutten for punishment, aren't you? :P Good ideas, BTW. One thing though, your plan doesn't make for developing NEW areas of drum corps. It's one thing to have the corps hit the "drum corps hot beds" but how would this plan grow new hotbeds?
  9. Beleive it or don't Journalists are held to certain standards. If they quote annonymous people that don't exist, and they are caught, they are not only fired, they are black balled from ever working in the industry again. I have been stunned by the number of unsubstantiated comments that were allowed to stand. In simple-ese, I couldn't BELIEVE the amount of bull excrement I saw. "Don't ask me where I heard this becasue I won't mention any names, but it was a staff member of a top 5 corps that said....." Are you kidding me??? I for one do not think that sort of crap should be allowed on DCP for one reason. As a board member of the Renegades....I'm pretty much privy to the goings on with the corps' business as well as what goes on behind the scenes with DCA. Someone perpetuated at myth that was absolutely NOT TRUE in any sense of the word but their sentence started with "I won't reveal the name but a staff member with a certain corps told me" and then began to blather with the most filth flarrin' flarrin filth and untruths I've ever heard. With this sort of BS flying around, it is no wonder alot of corps forbid their members from participating on DCP. They'd have to spend their days dispelling complete untruths that get spouted about by people and their "un-named source". YOU are not a journalist. YOU are some random poster (who doesnt' even have to identify yourself). YOU are not held to the same rules, guidelines and standards as REAL JOURNALISTS. (YOU- being the general "you".)
  10. One thing I've noticed about Division 1 marchers of ANY era. Drum corps ceased being drum corps the day after they aged out. :P Field Drill Discipline leadership following leadership rehearsing and performing your guts out making life long friends sleeping on gym floors travelling through the country laundry dray in BFE grumpy staff yelling "One more time" from the stands.....in the shade....holding a cool drink cursing (under your breath) at staff for yelling "one more time" from the stands....in the shade....holding a cold drink This has nothing to do with how many valves, what key, talking, no talking mic'd pits or what ever. Period.
  11. I don't know....but I doubt it was anything like the turkey raffle incident. ^0^ Sorry. Inside joke.
  12. Also quite ironic when you listen to people whaile about how it's "for the kids" and this is a "youth activity". huh...
  13. An argument can be made that alot of kids in drum corps today don't know how to handle their guns anymore. :P
  14. my family's back yard backed up against the Vanguard rehearsal field at the old Jefferson Jr. High/Mission College field back in the early 70's. My brothers used to sit on the fence and throw little pebbles at "the band kids" until a couple drummers climbed the fence and kicked their #####. That was my brothers' only experience with drum corps. My mom was in a drum and bell corps in Seattle in the 50's. Don't know the name of it. That's about it. I'm the only one insane enough to actually do it.
  15. Well...actually the props thate we (the guard) were initially going to start behind were big black ones - I know...because my drill from 2005 is sitting in my desk drawer here at work and there's an arrow and the words 'Big black back drop" written on it. And I also remember a joke that started about "Big Black......backdrops" ( heh) after it was explained to us what we'd be standing behind. :P Hey.....I just heard "Wicked" for the first time a few weeks ago. Looking forward to seeing your show. Rock on.
  16. For me it had to be any magic trick Vanguard did (levitating the girl on a broom stick, making the one guard chick appear in the box, closign the curtain and a second chick appears, etc) Also, 1989 Phantom Regiment right before the big push it gets quiet and one of the staff (director?) yells really loudly "Judges, are you watching????" F### yeah, that was bad ###.
  17. Yeah....because drum corps has never changed (G to Bb) because of a sponsor. :P
  18. We're going to make one of the pictures of a statue bleed onto the field.
  19. That's because, as I've found working on the Renegades board, it's hard to get Division 1 folks to think outside the box when it comes to marketing Drum Corps to a larger audience (which is one of Renegades missions). It's why I told Daniel he's going to meet with alot of resistance w/ his ideas here.
  20. I'm copied on those e-mails and I've been getting emails from other people, but none from you (I know because the ones that Anne doesn't answer, I do)
  21. Special shout out to all you old school Division 1 fans. We let it all hang out on G Bugles. See ya there! ^0^
  22. Stu, I think the point daniel is trying to make is that Drum corps, in order to grow and survive needs to expand its market. Get into the laps of people who have no idea what drum corps is. Otherwise it stays a cute little niche activity and the corps all struggle to make ends meet. He simply used the pictures from a catalogue to illustrate this point. You have to admit, if you're doing an Enya winterguard show....rifles are a bit bizzare, no?
