Hey I am a meteorology major and storm chaser! We need to connect!

I have an odd feeling overall scores are going to be really high and really tight this year.

It reminds me a bit of the MMX camp that the Xmen do in san antonio every year. It doesn't have nearly the same turnout but it is still a lot of fun regardless. I met some awesome people at those camps and did a lot of really run things with the MMs. It was great that my band program at the time had such a strong connection with the org (they used our school for many camps and our stadium for spring training, we bought their old equipment trailer, etc). The camp did a lot of the same things that the MFA/BOA camps do with crown.

I quite literally just watched this 17 times in a row 😅. Visual work performed at a high level without any of the music just mesmerizes me. Just itches this spot for me that I can't quite explain.

That is awesome! One of my friends that I went to middle school with and known since elementary school (so if I do my math properly - I have known him almost 12 years now!) is on the tuba line. I actually know a couple people in this years corps, I have just known him by far the longest. I am in full support of whatever they do this year.

The closer from Cadets 2011 still gets me every time. One of my top three favorite shows of all time.

It put a big smile on my face hearing the wellermans theme in a drum corps setting. This corps is very talented. excited to see how it translates to the field.

I can't wait for the lacrimosa closer. That is without a doubt going to have people on their feet if they arrange it right.

Got to take a look at the cake recipe earlier...scrumptious! The recipe is still available too, unlike another recipe that was recently taken down by another maker. All jokes aside, I am excited to see how this show evolves. There is sooooo much obvious room to grow with this one. And they put the lick in the show!!! I also wonder if there is going to be some sort of resolving color change with the props at the end of the show, to like a silver color.

I think it is crazy to see some of the users that are still very active today were on this forum that long ago...tells me a lot about just how tight knit this community really is however much people argue and whatnot here. Pretty much just like a batch of siblings too close in age if you ask me 😆. Though I wonder what made Terry decide to dig that far back to find this thread, because that would have taken hours worth of sifting. Dedicated, that's for sure.

Yeah my Tuba friend is also from San Antonio and he was complaining about the cold too 😆

Should be an interesting show...but if I have to hear "the detail in the pattern is movement" one more time... It has been stuck in my head now for four years....thanks Crown 😆

Uh oh guys....crown is doing another story show...watch out 👀 In all seriousness, crown has the percussion talent, the guard talent and writers, and of course the brass talent, and now they have been given the type of show that crown historically excels at with a powerful music selection. This could bode very, very well for them this competition season. I can't wait to see how this concept develops. I'd put money on many people in tears on finals night this year - and babies will be thrown. By the way, for those of you who haven't heard it on the field, Lacrimosa will send shivers down your spine when done justice on the field. Go check out Vandegrift HS (Texas) in their national championship show from 2019. Their ballad was Lacrimosa.

One of my long time friends that I went to middle school with is marching tuba for BAC this year, count me paying extra attention to their show this year!

Oh this is interesting. They are getting a head start on the show already, in terms of learning drill and choreo. Anyone have any camp notes from the April camp by chance, how are things going? Not much to go on but all marching stuff not WGI has been dead as per usual and I am starving for new information 😆

There have been a few shows that I remember where mm ideas had an actual impact on the show itself, the most memorable being the vocal drum break from Cadets '05 (absolutely genius and hilarious to this day btw). Not sure if they have much impact on the show in this day and age, but I guess it also comes down to what kind of idea it is and what kind of staff there is at the corps. Some staff are probably more accepting of outside ideas than others, and others it just depends on the situation. Who knows.

Well I should have just read a few more pages, because you wrote my thoughts in a much more succinct manner.

This conversation is probably long dead but I haven't been on the forum in a while and am just now catching up. This is beating a long dead horse but they easily should have dropped at least 55% of the "Right Here Right Now" statements in the voiceover, I think that it beat it into us way too much and if only used a couple times throughout the show with better timing could have added a much better touch to the show. For example, I would have kept the first two or three in around the opener, and I would have kept one in between the ballad and the closer, and then the chant that the entire corps did at the very end of the show. Keep it simple, and the effect is much more amplified. Secondly, I really think they should have added the Mello lick at the end of the closer. That would have added quite the touch in GE, and the crowd would have loved it (and frankly we were begging for it here the entire season too). From there I think that the streamers were a neat touch but the moment went on for too long, and honestly I believe that they took inspiration of that moment from Ronald Reagan's 2019 production (for those of you who don't pay much attention to HS marching shows I'd take a second to go give that one a watch to get what I am referencing) given the similarities that I noticed between those moments. I also am not sure exactly what that part of the show played into the overarching theme. I wish they had brought back the chandelier theme at some point in the show in the music or visually, because other than the short voiceover excerpt later on in the show there really wasn't much to tie the beginning of the show to the end of the show. One of the reasons why I think '13 landed so well with the crowd other than the immaculate brass execution was the show was very, very well put together in terms of the story line and seamlessly tied the opener to the closer. I was dying for another chandelier motif at the end of the show because I thought it was dearly needed. I love the fast geometrical drill and all, but the show didn't really resolve at all and just went b to the w all the way to the end, which if you are asking for a wall of sound with a lot of complicated drill is cool however I don't think it plays well to the judges in terms of overall general effect. The judges in '13 weren't only crying because of the execution by the brass, but also because of the writing itself tied in so well together that the story felt palpable. Crown needs a show with a palpable storyline again imo. It doesn't need to be the regurgitated story show that the former staff that is now at BAC is still doing, because that is long past now, but it definitely needs to be something more that both the marchers and the crowd can grasp onto. The most memorable shows in DCI history had a tangible story and concept for the crowd to grab a hold of with a flair of unique to them. The only show that I can think of that is memorable without that kind of story would be Bloo's DSU. '18 SCV, '15 Crown, '14 BD, '13 Crown, '11 Cadets, '08 Phantom, etc all had that kind of show that evoked those kinds of emotions and it worked every single time (other than the comparatively unfortunate finals run that Crown had in '15). That is what I think is needed for crown to win again. A simple yet complex show design with a theme that the marchers and crowd can fully grasp onto and invest themselves in. Sorry for the wall this ended up being a lot longer than I anticipated 😆

Vandegrift High School from Austin, TX marched in the parade today as well. They were the BOA Grand National champs in 2019.
