  1. Mine: 4--Garfield's where-the-####-did-THAT-come-from company front in 1984's "Tonight." 3--SCV's surprise "Bottle Dance" in 1982. 2--Velvet Knights' crocodile (RIP C. Gowdy) --er, shark :P eating the opera diva (and the 10 more seconds of the show). 1--SCV announced in 2nd at 1988 DCI (letting us know Madison won). #1 and #2 could be changed? The emotions were different, but I remember how scary loud it was in Kansas City. It was a near riot when the Scouts won. hehehe (in a good way from the crowd) I wasn't in Orlando in 1996... does the first tie/Phantom's win fall here? I can hear some "dissonance" in the crowd... Any other moments like this? The first time we saw Cadets' Les Miz in 1989 (before they watered it all down <**> ), the crowd was absolutely screaming during the show. But there weren't 35,000 there.
  2. Oh, poo. Of the eight DCI champs, SCV, Cadets, Star and Cavies (eventually in their efforts) had any "abstraction" and/or "a.g." in their shows. That's 50% (an "F," if you will). Anaheim Kingsmen, Madison (twice) and PR weren't those things when they won. BD has won eleven (11) (XI) DCI titles without a lick of abstraction. And they're not avante garde. They tried... remember 1995's "Carpe Noctum?" (sp?) They were beaten by Cavies' very tame "Planets" and Cadets visually dirty "Quintet." You then added (secondarily) "you also need to execute." Well, that's 60% of the score! Look at 1997. Your initial comments were Cadets to a tee. BD, a solid 2nd in GE, blew everyone away. Cadets' show was all GE (phenomenal writing all around) with enough performance points to keep SCV at bay. If SCV were better than BD as "people say," wouldn't SCV be beating them? They aren't better right now. It's obvious through the scores. They may GET better---heck, they may win, but I could say the same thing about Carolina Crown, and right now, that's as statistically correct as your statement.
  3. From a judge: "there are actually 11 tenths in Box 5. 9.0 - 10.0" B)
  4. uh... I was sure Box 5 started with 9.1. I'm emailing an expert. brb :P
  5. Not half as annoying as "woot." And "impeaching" a president is merely a slap on the wrist anyway. Clinton could have raped women and still been--- oops. Never mind. Tell me again.. why most feminists hate Bush and love Clinton? To stay on topic, BD scored 79.1 to open theie 1985 season. I'm not sure, but this could be a record for a corps' 1st show. They ended up in third place.
  6. Oh. By that logic, BD's multiple guard wins (the most in DCI) are due to breeding and arbitrarily choosing approx. 36 people every year and NOT the teaching/writing of that SMALL guard staff (Chandler, TJ, etc) that has been w/ the corps for years? I do see your point; April or Scott can't hold onto a piece of equipment, but BD has FAR fewer drops annually and not at all easy guard books.
  7. Those were the top four judge's numbers for 2001 finals. Yes, SCV was #2 in horns. Cadets won QF, btw.
  8. I should have been more specific: unless someone can make this more true, only two of April's Cadet guards managed to hold onto all equipment and/or bodies on finals night: 1989 (their first win) and 1991-- I've never seen a high cam for the latter, so this may not be accurate. I don't think 1992 had any drops, but a girl fell down (in the 'gunfight' part). "Recovery" is on the guard sheet, so drops aren't a killer.. I was just saying that Cadets typically have a lot. GCertainly to their credit (and amazement), the books are almost inhumanly tough... but so are BD's-- a team w/ much less droppage over the years (1993 made up for their entire history. eesh!).
  9. So, the "2001 Championship Hornline of the Cavaliers" is a correct, succinct statement? 19.9 -- BD 19.6 -- SCV 19.5 -- Cadets 19.2 -- Cavies
  10. 1998 championship guard? Do you mean WGI? BD won guard in 1998 (DCI). Cadets were second. Lots of ticks (in a great show). Incidentally, did Cadets have any guard drops in Finals (last Aug)? I don't remember, and I obviously don't have the DVD yet.
  11. YAY! Look for multiple guard drops on Finals night from SCV! ^0^ b**bs ^0^ b**bs
  12. I loved Avante Garde in 1985. Those cool yellow unis and that jacked up show! I think they placed around 16th! :P
  13. Write this down, and mark these words: Phantom: 7 Blue: 6 Madison: 2
  14. "almost?" How does never losing a show in 2000 make you type "almost?" By that definition (the DCI tie), the Cavies can't claim a threepeat. It was an "almost threepeat," right?
  15. 1985 Garfield Cadets (1996 Phantom was a snooze.)
  16. A real jerk tried to tell people I was not the Garfield Cadets' mellophone soloist in 1984. He said, "Dude, that was a girl." I said, "Listen. I'm not a girl. You take that back!" Then he called me a liar. What nerve. Some people. Sheesh.
  17. Star nailed a 95.3 in 1989. Highest score ever at 5th.
  18. Could you rephrase that and resubmit it? Who HAS the best talent in instructors/designers? Best amount? In weight? In bra sizes? What the heck? Who's who of dc past instructors...? All I'll say is that the Threepeat Team of the 80's couldn't be beaten. They even changed brass arrangers midway through and STILL won in 1985!
  19. Hoi polloi? If that is the response of the masses (by definition of your silly phrase), perhaps there is truth to it. It was in no way the cleanest show. That is obvious and not worth debating. Most effective? Not according to the 1988 sheets. I happen to know that one of those '88 judges tends to score BD fairly high--- he annually saw the corps as following those sheets better than most. (and following the sheets is what scores the most points.) Madison's feet/intervals sure looked cleaner to me. No, I'm not a judge; if I were a judge, I was not on the field. I call 'em as I see 'em... not as I WANT them to be. Because I found it the least interesting show, that says nothing about their championship shows. I most admire 1997 (Casablanca) for its cleanliness-- but it was antiseptically clean (0.5 below the very dirty Cadets in GE). 1999 blew me away in Dayton, OH...and in semifinals. Best thing I ever saw from them. Then in finals, they fizzled (uncharacteristically). Actually, 1993 is probably the least interesting BD show for me, because most Don Ellis music lulls me to sleep.
  20. In a nutshell, here was Star of Indiana: 1985: Disney Show. They got their fewet wet and designed/performed a show TO THE CROWD. 1986: Space Show. The best designers in the activity were all trying to outdo each other. This was the worst drum corps money could buy (in terms of bad ideas... hamster cages? come on!) 1987: Circus Show. Gone was the world class staff (many of whom designed/taught that year's "Appalachian Spring"). Back to a crowd-friendly production which was kinda/sorta ok. (Great mello chops, though!) 1988: Porgy & Bess. "Let's get serious!" They did with the 4th different personality in as many years alive. 1989: British themes. Visually muddled but musically very sound. This fired the first shot at the big boys in terms of drums and horns (cohesion). 1990: Belshazzar's Feast. Their first "out there" show. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. 1991: Roman Images. Holy Macaroni! 1992: American Variations. "Would someone please like us???" (No. Not with this.) 1993: Sam and Bela. Their very best work. Name another corps that, in a short span of 9 years, has gone through more change. I'm not saying that is bad, but to be most successful, look at BD and Cavaliers: their 17 combined championships came as a result of them being THEM. Whenever BD switched to something "new" (e.g. 1985's more classical approach to jazz-- 1990's Tommy), the points don't add up. Ditto Cadets. 9 championship shows don't compare to "Les Mis" and the 2001-2004 dry spell.
  21. Star sold out in 1992. After two masterful repertoires of 1990 and 1991 which weren't as popular as the very trite musical selections of the Cavaliers, they tried to get people to like them (anything contrary to that falls on deaf ears, so don't bother). Star did very well in 1992, because they were clean off the bat. In the end, they only had a good hornline. Watch the company front near the end. Why are people out of step at the world championships? Eesh! I only came close to booing once-- it happened to be that year, but it was for the Color Guard award erroneously going to BD. Again, Star was masterful in 1990, 1991 and 1993. I have no beef with them, but that 1992 effort was hokey. And believe me, I've had a bigassed American flag waving on my porch LONG before 9/11.
  22. I'm sure this was discussed in the 1970's when the world was told that almost all the world's oil supplies were gone. Gas DOUBLED back then, btw. Gee, they were off by only about 3 trillion barrels.... Same with that global cooling nightmare of the 70's. They seriously threatened another ice age and had the same amount of proof that they now do about global warming. I wish these freaks would make up their minds. Anyway, gas prices have never been an issue; I find it more appalling that some small shows (maybe 2 or 3 finalist corps and some D2/3) charge $35 or such. And they wonder why butts aren't in seats.
