  1. In my marching years with Sky, we did a Baltimore/Redskins exhibition game in 1970 ... then in 71 wet did the Jets/Baltimore game after winning DCA ... in 78 we did the entire ALCS series for the Yankees ... What I remember growing up and seeing on TV: Hawthorne doing Cleveland Browns games in th 60's ... the Yankee Rebels doing Miami Dolphins games in the 70's ... Archer Epler and Reilly doing Eagles games in the 60's - also the Eagles Marching Band who sounded an awful lot like a certain corps from Philly ... LOL ... the Baltimore Colts also had a Marching Band ... Hawthorne doing all the Giants home games in 81 ... I'm sure there were more but, those stick in my mind ... Andy "Still rememberin' Manny doing a pom-pom cheer with the Colts Cheerleaders" Lisko
  2. FYI - Chuck Dohn now lives in my town of Fairfield, CT and plays on and off with the Park City Pride ... I think he had knee replacement surgery recently, which has put him on the sideline again ... I usually run into him at the Barnum or, see him tooling around town on his motorcycle ... yup ... small world indeed ... there's also a bass drummer (can't remember his name) from Lucy's that lives around the corner from me ... married a girl from the CT Royal Lancers ... Hardware and Hamilton used to come up to his house for a cookout every year and stop over my house ... fun times ... Andy
  3. "Little" Roosevelt was the stadium in Union City ... used to sponsor the "Free Show" on the 4th of July ... always a stellar lineup ... you're right about Newark School Stadium ... I think it hosted the majority of the Penn-Jersey Circuit shows ... BTW ... I know the last P-J championship was held in 1965 but, when was the circuit actually formed - and who were the original corps? ... anyone know? ... I found an old ad from 1958 for a 2nd Annual Mid-Winter Penn-Jersey show featuring: St. Vinnie's, Liberty Bell, Paterson Cadets, Holy Name Cadets and St. Patrick's ... was 1957 its first year? ... the CT corps didn't hook up with them until 60 or 61 ... Andy
  4. Manny and I met on the I&E circuit in the 60's ... if fact I remember the first show he ever competed in ... what a talent ... the crew back then at I&E's was full of characters, led by Manny and Gaff ... he first joined NY in 66 and played with them thru 68 ... then back to Lucy's, Sky, BS, Sky, BS, Sky ... he did a weekend with the Hurcs in 67 ... LOL ... and I think a short stint with the NY Kingsmen that year also ... he was everywhere ... the last year I remember him with Sky was in 73 ... then his untimely death in 75 ... a true tragedy ... I can still hear Larry Dougard reliving that night ... Oh well ... it was Bob Bunce of Selden fame ... and I agree - Tuthill was a scary sight in that baseball cap and free-flowing hair ... I remember he used to judge guard shows for some extra money in the winter in that getup ... LOL ... Guess instructors back then were more interchangable than the players ... except for Manny! I could go on forever with the stories ... as most contributing here can ... Later, Andy
  5. They might be different organizations but, the majority of the players and participants are the same ... by moving to a Monday morning brunch for the HOF you eliminate any "dual" participation by inductees or attendees from other DCA venues that weekend ... I don't envy all thet discussions you must have gone through on the topics ... 10 pounds of weekend activities in a five pound bag ... :-)
  6. Wow ... this definitely brings back memories ... it was not uncommon in the 60's for Circuit Championships (Greater NY, Penn-Jersey, etc.) to occur in late Sept and even early Oct ... I can vividly remember on GNYC Championsihp being held IN THE SNOW on Pandall's Island, NY!!! ... YEOW! ... even in the early years of DCA, there were shows held after the Championship, which wasn't necessarily on Labor Day weekend ... Andy
  7. Steve, I remember St. Lucy's as the season's start and they were very good ... I think Manny was back with you playing the solo in the OTL (at least for a short while) ... I lost track or their progress as Sky got into the swing of their own season ... Manny may have even been with us for a while ... LOL ... Anyway ... the hotel story was told to me by Jerry "Hardware" and Frankie "The Geek" ... although, I admt, it may have been one of those "can you top this?" scenarios at a bar after some show or rehearsal ... HAHA ... you know how it goes: "my corps did this ..." oh yeah? ... "well, my corps did so and so ..." ... BRAVADO at it's best! Anyway, I was surprised that St. Lucy's went to the AL in Atlanta and skipped the VFW in Philly ... I figured you wanted to try and repeat as Champs ... Never heard the Angelica story ... was Sasso still teaching the horn line in 69? ... Flowers was on drums that year - no? ... Tuthill probably got his shorts in a bind because Lucy's was the only corps in Jersey he wasn't teaching! ... LOL ... (don't get mad Mike but, Christ - he was everywhere that year) ... See ... passion doesn't hover only around 1972 ... many things prior and after that are fun to get the details on 30-40 years later ... this is like participating in a PBS special!!!! ... LOL ... Andy
  8. Even if no further venues/size corps are added, it sounds like the DCA should consider having a post season formal banquet (as is done in other sports and circuit activities) to catch its breath in a relaxing environment ... they could hand out whatever awards they give out for competing corps (Director of the year, etc.) and also honor the HOF inductees ... either that or move the HOF induction to a Monday morning breakfast ... :-)
  9. Yes ... AL Nats in Atlanta ... Cavaliers took the Jr. show (St. Lucy's was the 68 Champ) and the Yankee Rebels won the Sr. Crown (Sun was the 68 Champ) ... I was at the Philly show also ... can still see the corps lining up three deep waiting to compete: Inspection line, Ready line, Starting line ... Andy
  10. As Dick Enberg would say ... "OH MY!" ... Andy "I've been trown out of better places than this" Lisko
  11. Problems at the VFW Nats in Atlanta ... trashed the hotel (HAHA - what corps didn't back then) ... priest broke up the corps ... maybe Tommy (LucysSkylinersAlumni) can clarify ... Andy
  12. The current thought is three shows: Boston, MA area in Jan; North Jersey (Garfield Post) in Feb; and the NA Championship in Bridgeport, CT in March ... demographic-wise, from the list of Mini Corps at DCA, there are other areas possible for a show: Albany, NY; South Jersey/Philly and Western PA ... you are correct in that a combo of I&E and Mini Corps make for an ideal situation ... it would be real nice to get the old I&E circuit going again to chase away the winter doldrums ... then when spring hits, the indoor Alumni shows take over ... it's a good fit ... e-mail me privately (anyone) and we'll discuss the possibilities ... Andy "part of the 60's I&E crowd" Lisko
  13. I had the opportunity to announce last year's BHOF I&E show in Bridgeport, which featured a Mini Corps category featuring MassBrass, Capital Brass and Amoskeag Sound ... it was a spirited and friendly competition ... so ... the trick is getting more venues for these gorups to perform at ... like the Harrisburg and BHOF shows ... in fact, the BHOF is planning three I&E/Mini Corps competitions in 2008, the final being their North American Championships in Bpt again ... be on the lookout for details ... Andy "This could be the start of something big" Lisko
  14. Checked my DCN's from 72 and neither was listed ... you'll have to rely on others in the competing corps that may have kept scores. Check with Donnie Solinger from the Bucs - they were in both shows. Andy
  15. Danny, The recordings were made using state-of-the-art TV studio filming equipment from that era. The Haas's did an extraordinary amount of work in enhancing the quality of the original tapes and the final product is very good ... I've had the Sky shows on VHS for more than 10 years now and have since transferred them to DVD to stop the wearing down of the tapes ... it's truly a trip back in time to see the shows ... I think your father is even on some of the shows juding at the Dream! ... Hope all is well with you, Andy
  16. Timmy (I get to call him that because I marched with him, and I'm older ... LOL) ... if DCP is truly behind this cause (and i'm sure they are) your 'call to arms' should be listed and highlighted somehow on their home page to provide visibility to all that visit the site ... this is a huge undertaking and it deserves proper exposure ... same goes for listing it on Marching Band Planet, whose readers should be sympathetic to the cause also ... Andy "I've judged the Norwalk HS Band ... and they're good ... real good" Lisko
  17. FINALLY ... a condom for the Coneheads' Rings of Love!!!! ... "Oh baby ... Oh baby ... Oh baby ..." :-)
  18. Look for the I&E Results link on the SCORES page where the Finals Scrores are listed. Andy
  19. HAHA ... the only "performing" I did was at the tailgate party trying to keep up with Bucky!!! ... LOL ... the 16 snares Sky had out there in Clifton didn't include me (retired), Wes (wrist) and Shirley Temple (year off) ... they lost us but picked up four new snares (including Fast Frankie) over the winter ... Wildwood always used to be our post-season respit as well ... except we didn't have to the parade and contest ... YAY! ... used to love to bring the kids down to the boardwalk rides to idle the hours away ... now, I only make is as far down a Atlantic City sometimes ... I agree with you ... Alumni Corps give you the option to relive or extend your drum corps career as long as you want - when you want ... just like you, having my kids finally see me drum was a big thing also ... Alumni Corps allow for the "good life" ... hope they keep them simple and fun ... Andy "maybe I'll start a NY SIDELINER fan club" Lisko
  20. Hey Steve ... YUP! ... hung up the sticks at last year's DCA ... just couldn't take the pain any more ... made the Clifton show this year and that's about it ... and from the looks of it, the "3,000 lb" snare line is still holding its own weight ... HAHA ... hope all is well with you ... Andy "retired from DC - not life" Lisko
  21. Charlie ... thanks for the great shot of the "3,000 lb" snare line!!!! Andy "now just a NY SIDELINER" Lisko
  22. Just play faster ... I've seen you guys (in Bridgeport) ... you can do it! Andy
  23. HAHA ... and I wouldn't have met YOU Robbie! ... LOL ... Andy "love those redneck women" Lisko
  24. Started in 58 with the St. Raphael's organization then morphed over to the Bpt. PAL Cadets in the mid 60's ... hooked up with the NY Skyliners in 1969 and played there until 73 ... off years 74-77, then went back to teaching Sky 78-82 ... Charter member of their Alumni Association in 85 and then Charter Member of their Alumni Corps in 94 ... just retired from playing this season ... also taught the Westchester Horizons, Torrington Vagabonds, CT Alumni and Park City Pride along the way ... currently enjoying DC retirement ... met a lot of great people over the years ... Andy
