  5. I was originally a drummer when I came up to the Hurks from a street corps in Danbury, I realized very soon that I would not make the drum line I just did not have the experience, Joe said how about a horn, a baritone, he gave me a horn showed me how to play a C and bam I was kooked,I will alway be grateful to Joe, he gave me an appreciation for music that I probably would have never had; I miss him dearly, I would be in CT visiting family and it just happened he worked at the Ford dealership in Danbury I would stop by, we would talk drum corps until his manager would come up and ask him if he was intending to sell any cars that day, he always had time. RIP Joe SOMF
  6. Most of the time he would whistle the part then have you play it back, I remember one evening at his home in Stratford, CT my wife and I witnessed him whistle in harmony (try that), he loved Stan Kenton and there was always the if you ain't dead or dying you better be at practice or there's the door don't let it hit you in the A** on the way out SOMF
  7. Well about time, thanks Andy I need that slap along side my head, dam old age, I was in CT two weeks ago for the PCP party, maybe this year I will be able to get home a few more times, next time you are in FL stop by the FL Brass a nice little G corps SOMF

  10. Changed from lightning bolts to cast member, a tropical attitude, very popular in the drumming world
  11. Jim was always an upstanding person, I met Jim while a member of the Hurricanes. I guess that Joe G now has a very good drum major in that great drum corps in the sky. May God bless Jim and give comfort to his family Bill S SOMF
  12. Could this person have been a soloist with Blessed Sac and currently resides in Flagler Beach, FL? SOMF
  13. As an old time Hurricane who played during the 60's and 70's, I will be looking forward to seeing the show this year, hopefully at the Barnum Festival; SOMF
  14. Done! ... Still thinking of hosting an Orlando Regional in 2012? ... lots and lots of old I&E talent in FL!!!! Have a GREAT Thanksgiving ... Sounds Good, I have passed the information from Anthony to our board as well as Dick Burns, it will be up to them to make that decision. There is some interest, we will see what the future holds; no promises Bill SOMF
  15. Andy I am planning on coming to Bridgeport this year, I told my wife, no surgeries untill after April. A quick update the Florida Brass are now up to 25 plus horns and sounding good, Dick Burns has done an out standing job. Put a beer on ice for me. Bill S PCP Florida SOMF
  16. I have been following this thread for the last few days and I see some interesting comments about the small crowds at finals, pre-lims and the Spectacular, I have been in Drum Corps since I was 12 years old, I am 67 now. I competed in the 60's and 70's with the CT Hurricanes. That time period was succesful because familys were able to afford the gate admission and they were able to understand what was being played, they could identify with corps by their music. We have become our own worst enemy, we have unintentionally blocked out fans that would extend themselves by some of the changes that have been made over the years in the interest of progress. i am not suggesting we go backwards, I am saying lets take another look at what has worked in the past. I would suggest to DCA that to increase the attendance at the Championships, no matter what city we are in you have to have a large portion of the expected attendance from that area, the main problem that I see is admission, you have to make the admission affordable to the area population. If you were not a drum corps person could or would you pay the current prices that are asked now? Drum corps fans will sacrafice to see their favorite corps no matter where they are but non drum fans espeecially in this economy would think twice about where they would spend their interainment dollars. I know that these shows are expensive to put on, I have confidence that DCA will look into what needs to be done. SOMF
  17. Ray, I was at a Saturday Hurks practice on May 22, the short time I was there theywere working on the drill, they look just fine. The one difference I noticed this year compared to what I saw last year at this time is focus, no fooling around. It seems they have a goal in mind and are driving towards it. Bill S Orlando SOMF
  18. Ray Thank You for the run down, good job. I am sorry I had to postpone my trip to the BHOF, My wife had to have surgery that was originally scheduled for the end of the month. I am honored that I am allowed to play with Park City, their dedication and family atmosphere make the trips a lot more tolerable. I was looking forward to seeing you but it was not to be. how was the BHOF inductions. I have rescheduled the trip for PCP Camp weekend May 20th to May 23rd. See You Soon Bill S SOMF
  19. Hey Andy I will buy the first pitcher, I spoke to Anthony he asked if the Florida Brass would be interested in doing a BHOF show next winter, I will speak to you about that when I get up there, there is some interest. I will do three shows besides BHOF, the fees that airlines are charging are up and the baggage fees are as high as some of the airfares. See You in april Bill S
  20. Andy Thanks for clearing that up, I thought I was there but at this age it all runs together, see you at the BHOF; oh is it my or your turn to buy the beer?? Bill S CT Hurricane Alumni SOMF
  21. Ray What a great story, you are right, just to be near the greats of DRUM & BUGLE Corps is an honor in its self, I will be flying up from Florida for the BHOF dinner to see the man who convinced me to switch from drums to playing baritone in 1963. Joe Genaro (RIP), will be inducted into the BHOF at this dinner; this honor for him is way overdue, I look forward to meeting you and other former Hurricanes who will gather for this event as well as Joe's family who I understand will be there as well. Bill S. CT Hurricane Alumni SOMF
  22. On Jan 10, 2010, the Florida Brass All Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps. will hold their first annual open house and practice at the Lakleand American Legion Post # 4, 1375 Adriana Street, Lakeland, FL. 33803, from 12:00 to 4 pm . Florida Brass members represent many DCA corps current and past as well as members from the US Airforce and Marine Drum & Bugle Corps , membership is open in all sections and the performance schedule is light, Hall of Fame Member Dick Burns is music arranger and Horn Instructor and Ron Daw handles the drum line instruction and arrangements. For further information go to the Florida Brass award winning web site: floridabrass.org/floridabrass.htm
  23. You thinks right Ray, we do spend way to much time dwelling in the past, especially me. The 60's were a special time, it was 66 that was the push that put the Hurricanes on top in 67. To Elphaba "touche" bad choice of words, but I wonder what the breakdowns were especially at the Legion Nationals? GO HURRICANES
  24. how quick we forget, the corps needs to avenge 1966, No mercy, hit them where it hurts. The Hurks get no respect, any chance they get they need to get out there and let them know that the Hurricanes are a force to be reckoned with no matter what year it is. Go Hurricanes Bill S SOMF
